Alex Turner, the band's main songwriter, was heavily influenced by the Liverpool beat poet John Cooper Clarke, who's been around forever. Check out any of his videos on KZbin and you'll see it immediately. They even adapted one of his poems called I Wanna Be Yours into a song that did well in the charts.
