My ears are strange like that where I have to listen to a song several times before I start to pick up on the full lyrics. Doesn't matter if it's something harder to decipher like metal vocals or something straight and clear like this song. I tend to listen to the melodic notes of the main vocals and harmonies like they are a guitar/keyboard or something flowing along with the rest of the instruments....Paying attention to the lyrics seems to come secondary to listening to the song composition and all the layers. Maybe it's because I play instruments so the sounds themselves are the most important to me....maybe it's my ADHD not allowing me to focus on the words haha. I have talked to other musicians and music listeners who go about listening to music in a similar manner....Hopefully that makes sense, but for me personally that is why I rarely pick up the lyrics on a first/second/third listen.

Genius work by Gotye -- Ive learned a lot about him over the years since this song came out-- He is Belgium Australian and is currently living in Brooklyn and is a drummer in a Australian band called The Basics -- He did his solo projects under the name Gotye (his mothers nick name for him ) - His real name is Wouter André "Wally" De Backer and made two absolutely amazing albums in a barn on his parents property by himself (Kimbra is featured only in this one) and is more interested in being creative than being famous - The xylophone bits in the beginning are Baa Baa Black Sheep tune - Yes Its a failed relationship but its because he is mourning the loss of a old love that he couldnt let go of and she didnt stay because no matter how hard she tried he was still thinking about someone else -- He paints himself into the background and she unpaints herself out of his picture -- Brilliant work -- BTW he is working on a new Gotye album and we will see him again! -- A really big favorite song of his for me is Hearts a Mess kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6GxYp1uh5qfkJo The official video is just as creative -- Gotye dosent believe in suing over copyright material so I wish you would react to this gem too !!!! From what I can tell, he’s saying he never truly felt like the relationship was right, that he felt lonely even when with her, when they broke up he felt relieved but she said they’d stay friends and then ghosted him, changed her number and sent her friends for her belongings (he doesn’t say she was collecting numbers, he says she had her friends collect her records) and wouldn’t talk to him. And he doesn’t understand why when she said they’d stay friends. But then you hear her side and she feels like he mislead her, that he said he was over someone else when he wasn’t and she also felt the disconnect but he always made her feel like it was her fault. That he would do shitty things then twist it to be her fault. At least that’s how she felt, so when they’re over she completely cut him out. It’s basically a toxic relationship between two messed up people and the emotional manipulations and misunderstandings they go through. It’s a cool song because it does show both sides and how both can be both in the wrong and in the right at the same time, yet the song over all sounds almost sweet until you listen to the lyrics.
@ShaunHensley2 жыл бұрын
I think it's more like he's doing going back and forth 'i don't need you i'm fine/you were so much to me how could you' that sometimes happens in a breakup
@batkat02 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's anything in the song that sounds particularly toxic on the girl's end. The guy claims she said they'd still be friends and that she ghosted him. But that's his claim. He then mentions that she wouldn't get her stuff in person and she changed her number. That's a lot of effort just to ghost an old boyfriend unless he was doing some awful shit. Plus, he makes it sound like he's fine without her her, cool as a cucumber then he's all offended that she seems to have moved on without looking back. He sounds more upset that he is not in control of the situation rather than the actual breakup.

I’ve been in this EXACT relationship. This is a Narcissist Abuser that she had to cut off to protect herself. He hurt her over and over and over and was never sorry. So she left and had to cut him off completely to protect and save herself from his grasp. You have to cut off a narcissist completely because they know exactly how to manipulate you. Their abuse becomes greater and greater to the point of murder(in some) because they have to have their ego constantly stroked by all around them. Making a person their emotional slave and punching bag is their greatest art. Gaslighting is a precise weapon they can use with a surgeon’s precision. She had to have other people interact and get her stuff. She got out and can never go back. It takes a lot of courage to leave these abusers, because they literally make you believe you are crazy(and your friends and family begin to believe it too) as they gaslight your every action and every move. You become a prisoner that can’t leave because they make you guilty of even breathing. It’s terrible. Mine threatened to off themselves at first, then slowly over time began poisoning me(for real, with pesticides in my food) so I was too sick to leave. Then the real crazy POW style abuse began, and threats of violence and murder against myself and my children if I left. They are out of the picture, and Thank goodness. I would have died if I had stayed. They are called Narcopaths. Listen to the song again with this perspective, it really shows the relationship for what it was. He did a great job of portraying both sides. Love this song

Nostalgic ...that's funny, to me ten years ago is not much different than last week ; )

You cracked the code, Brad. It's about a messy breakup -- like almost ALL breakups. And about the emotional debris that both people are left with.

now she's literally out of the picture The live concert version is great with the audience participation

When I first heard this song I thought it was Sting. I was wondering how after all these years he could make a great song. Then I found out who really sang it.

Haha, something similar happened to me, thought the same thing, only it really was a Sting or even Police song, just an old one that I didn't know.

At 4 minutes, Lex sits back and reflects. Brad, listens intently as if he's terrified about what Kimbra is about say.

That’s Goyte doing the vocals in the background… he did everything in this song other than of course her vocals! For his solo work he usually does all the music himself! But yeah also an incredible drummer, also not sure these 2 peeps realise how incredibly difficult his vocals are to sing it is incredibly high & he is singing in full voice!! Incredible!!!!!

Yeah, I was tripping when she said he was yelling monotone or whatever. Wut?!

It’s a shame he was only known for this song. Hearts a mess, Bronte, Eyes Wide Open and many others were equally good.

It’s such a sad song! Cause he shows that there are always two sides and in your deepest hurts you are not able to see the other person and his/her view anymore

I think that besides the break up and fallout, it’s about communication breakdown. He says his side. She says her side. Both go from reserved/melancholy in verse, to loud/angry in chorus. And then escalates to yelling/volatile in the outdo. Each singers role at the end reflects that, with him talking over her and her yelling over him. Both blame the other and refuse to listen as communication has broken down. In the end, there’s only silences as they basically “walk away” from each other and sever ties.

When the song makes you stop, and just listen to all the elements… that’s what music is supposed to do right there.. love her take on the shouting in the song.

It's about sharing something very special between two people and then it disappears. It is heartbreaking and many of us have been there.

The problem of break ups, shared friends and connections suddenly gone and the other acting as though you were nothing from each ones prospective.

I love lex can interpret intricate metal songs that have difficult lyrics to understand but was confused by a break up song at first 🤦🏼♂️😂😂

I remember a set of songs from Kimbra, the young lady here. She filmed some songs from a studio, wearing a red dress. A number of the songs were interesting but Plain Gold Ring was really good. A cover of a Nina Simone song.

Gotye actually has a lot of other really good songs that don't seem to get near as much attention as this one, as good as it is. Y'all should definitely check out State Of The Art, it's off the same album and is one of my favorites by him!
