Flags at Glastonbuy are kind of a tradition, but a practical one. Basically, get an original flag or something on a stick and you can tell your friends to come find you by the Pyramid stage/Other stage/etc and to look for the flag of Japan / Green alien on a stick / pink bloomers on a pole. It makes for quite a spectacle as well as being useful, though occasionally someone comes in with something 3 meters too big and blocks the view but generally it's pretty cool. It seems like there is more use of flags/stuff on sticks at glasto than other festivals but i could be wrong, but normally when i see a live video with a bunch of people having flags it turns out to be glastonbury.

I remember the first time I went to Glasto back in the early 90's, thinking we were smart, we took a flag, thinking we were being clever but only to find once we got through security.....what am I saying, we paid a Scouser £5 to climb his ladder, anyway, the site was awash with flags and finding our tent each time was like finding a needle in a flag adorned haystack.

Being from my village I was lucky enough to see them at the very start of their journey in tiny venues which held about 500 for the princely sum of £6 (about $10). I saw them twice the week they released their first commercial single including The Leadmill gig in Sheffield where they found out they were number 1 in the charts.

@@intothemusic908 Sadly they never played a gig in the villlage (High Green) where they lived and mentioned in a song on their first album. They applied to a venue in High Green who have a stage and have bands/acts on 2 or 3 times a week to practice there in the very beginning but we’re turned down .

I'm 28 and my father 60, i grew up listening to his rock music and i love it, now I understand that proud of my father, with you both now watching, reacting and enjoying of the music that I listen to this days.

You guys MUST see them play live the next time they tour. I saw them play twice when they were last in the U.S. for their Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino Tour. I can assure you there is no lull or low point in their performances as their catalogue is so deep. I believe the last time they toured The States before that was with The Black Keys, when Arctic Monkeys were releasing their AM album. Also, the flag trend seems to be a big part of the UK music festival scene--they range from the silly and absurd to the flags of countries people have traveled from to see the bands. It's always fun watching live footage from places like Glastonbury, Reading, and Leeds. Thanks for continuing to support and react to Arctic Monkeys!

Another classic track and great reaction. My favourite Arctic Monkeys song. They went to Sheffield University and I suspect this song was written about where they lived. I hope I am right, its a classic standard UK Uni situation (not Ivy league obviously), living in digs surrounded by reality.

Alex was only 20 or 21 when they performed this In front of the biggest festival crowd in the UK just a year after they had their first success. Amazingly cool performance from the entire band. You know you've made it when the crowd is singing your song back at you.

The flag thing is just glasto. Everyone just brings their flags. We use ours as a meeting point. You get lost look for the flag.

I don't know why exactly you get so many flags up, but it's probably just patriotism really (not in a bad or overly nationalistic way though) Glastonbury is the biggest music festival, certainly in the British isles, probably in Europe and arguably in the world. So as oppose to American festivals that would be largely nationalistically homogeneous, you get a lot of different people from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, but also get small numbers of people from elsewhere, so I guess it's just a representation of that really.
