That’s not at all what Ralfy and Roy said, you should go back and watch it again including last years SWA, springbank was not competing since they got the trifecta award meaning that they had won the category for 3 years straight and received a special recognition and did not participate in category to allow other distilleries to be recognized.

We were mostly having some fun at the poor choice. We all love those guys. Even if their awards have some funny results. Whiskies not made in the year of awards winning for example.

Dustin comes off a bit dry with his humor at times. Combine that with missing a few details. He means well 😉 Regardless this distillery currently, is not one in super high on but we will give them more opportunities.
@tiredoffools8929Күн бұрын
I respectfully disagree with your assessment on this, but I think its largely because you guys were going into feeling like Springbank got cheated on an award, when they actually didn't. 1) The OSWAs Award has a rule that if one award has been won three years in a row, they d automatically win a "TRIFECTA" award in that category, and will not be eligible for the main award to allow another in the running a chance to shine. So Ardnamurchan won Best Distillery of the Year because Springbank wasn't eligible. Next year however Springbank will be eligible again, so it won't be a surprise if it reclaims the title once more. 2) 1) Ardnamurchan is not actually known for Sherry Casks. (However their Sherry Casks are of excellent quality) 3)You may not be a fan of champagne casks, and that is of course personal preference, but their annual release of those PL champagne casks are extremely sought after because of the creamy mouth feel and taste. I have tasted both the PL annual release and the 10, and the 10 has far more bourbon influence than the PL Champagne. In fact the only thing I got from the Champagne casks in the 10's finish was the creamy mouth feel but it was very muted by the bourbon casks. 4)If you have not tried their annual Sherry release, you really need to try that, as you are a fellow sherry head like me and that will give you a better gauge about Ardnamurchan quality. The only reason there is a 10 year old now is because that is the oldest whisky they have produced. You can't really judge a entire distillery on single bottle finished in a cask you are not familiar with or may not even like at all. Try the annual Sherry Cask, and also the Cask Strength bottlings. Then also realize that most of the juice has been 8 years or younger and it becomes apparent why this brand is so popular. 5) Ardnamurchan is very deserving of the title because they have been making young spirit that punches well above other age stated whiskies, has 46% and above ABVs, has QR codes on the labels so you can find out details about the bottle and not have to read the labels, and best of all they don't price gauge on their popularity. Their Sherry cask is my personal favorite and it does have peat in it.
@topshelfdustin3060Күн бұрын
On the sherry I was talking about, it was adelphi which owns the distillery. They are well known for those, though I certainly haven't had any of their stuff since we don't get it here. I think two of these is enough for me for now. I'll wait for them to get a 15 year expression. Though I know a few of our fans have said they enjoy the brand so who knows, maybe they'll slip us some samples.
@topshelfwhiskyКүн бұрын
I appreciate the firm but respectful rebuttal. I'm never upset with opinions like the awards as long as they are genuine and I believe they are. For the record, Kavalan would probably get my vote but maybe they don't consider it due to location. Now Dustin and I may be a bit salty that we have never been asked! 😉 but it's all in good fun.

Very interesting...and good to have Mike on board for this one...I haven't tried that one yet, but I bought the Paul Launois release 2024 (again Champagne casks on board, poured into ex-Bourbon casks & one cask of ex-Bourbon was added to the final mix, its unpeated as well) and, while it is also controversial, I really love it, but I recon it is not your typical Ardnamurchan (by typical I mean their peated small batches with a mix of Bourbon & Sherry casks) but I really love it (it is also a Cask Strength that doesn't feel its high abv), and it reminds me of some famous highlander malts when not too spicy (my video about is not recorded yet, but I left a "first impressions" tasting note on Instagram & will talk about it soon in my Highlights of the Year 2024 upcoming video. Now, it has to be said that these are their oldest casks, and some other folks also mention the too much oak influence that could have erased the Champagne influence at a certain extent...I don't know i haven't tried it but might wait for more reviews to make sure I'm not spending my money in there where I could buy me a second bottle (believe it or not) of the P.L. 2024 release...Your ratings are terrible (between other terrible statements about Canadian Ryes lol-I don't agree with you on the Lot 40 CS, JP Wiser's Dissertation or Whistlepig 10 first sourced releases, greart stuff imho, though I haven't tried the Alberta CS, not available here) but they rightfully so reflect your opinions, no problem with that. I also had varied experiences with Ardnamurchan, some hit & some miss, so I'm staying critical & though they're impressive, I tend to prefer the wider & more complex & not heavily peated batches over the years (but yeah the Berry Bros SC #374 sherry cask was one of my WOTY 2023...). But l like the fact that you're not afraid of not pleasing the audience about a rather hyped distillery name & fame...so kudos for that...

@@placeswithspirit the "dirt" has all of about ZERO to do with anything in whisky. Now the type of grain used, absolutely has a difference. I'm a fan of Ardnamurchan and Ardnahoe and a bunch of other young distilleries, but we have collectively lost our mind recently. It's like the ONLY thing that matters is 46%, NCF, and natural color, and not what it...tastes like.
@topshelfwhisky20 сағат бұрын
We all want them to be great. Just like Ardbeg 20 years ago. Dustin and I have had this conversation many times. 46% is a minimum for a quality dram these days, in our opinion. It’s actually one of my biggest issues with Springbank. To me, 46 is not enough especially when the 21 and 25 year-old are so expensive these days. How am I gonna pay $1200 retail for a 46% 25 year-old the only one we would ever consider is the SB 25. Now I must bring this up. We love cast strength whisky, especially me. For some that’s not a problem. After all Macallan still sells their 25 for $3000 at 43% chill filtered. We’ve liked the 48% figure. It almost never happens that the 48% single scotch feels thin or is lacking some type of way that would be caused by ABV. The only example I can think of is a lag in friends of classic malts. It was 48% but I believe it was chill filtered. Aside from that that’s always a great ABV, again for single malts. Did I ramble there?
@llamabones4 сағат бұрын
Good rambling, though. If you've only been listening to Ralfy for the past 5 years, you would think that Arran or Deanston or Glencadam are literally the best distilleries in the world. Those guys deserve credit for what they are doing, but they're all releasing what is basically the equivalent of the best Hyundai. There are classes of whiskey that are closed off to most of us, but we can't start pretending that distilleries that max out at 88 or 89's are the BEST just because they sell for 50 euros and have a QR code on the bottle.

I am now a try before you buy consumer on these boom era distillers, American craft included. While I want to like Lochlea, AD, Clydeside, Lindores Abbey, Harris, etc., the whiskey is just underdeveloped due to the youthfulness. Yes, with some, I can see potential, but thats not enough to spring my money on a bottle. Too many nice bottles on my shelf already. Although Irish, Waterford was the exception, because their whisky was all good.

But yeah, I'm in general with you on wanting to try before I buy, but sadly no bars carry these here. So its' fish for samples or buy. And sample swapping gets time consuming and expensive fast. Fair enough. 1. I like Ardnamurchan (not all of them now) but I see you're on the neck pour. The neck pour from my AD10 was disappointing. Halfway through the bottle and it's a spritely little light whisky. 2. Not all markets are going to have the same taste preferences. Would be interested to see you try the ArdnaMerica. 3. While I appreciate Ardnamurchan offerings, there are a lot of mineral and savoury notes. Sometimes umami depending on the bottling. But I definitely wouldn't expect some of my whiskey friends to like it. I reckon I like Kilkerran for the same reasons, and I know how you feel about it 😂 4. I think generally Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich suck (but only personally, please don't block me). I can get why others are obsessed. Good fun to see a rant-y review, keep up the good work! 👍 Who doesn't enjoy getting their mate to taste some absolutely pungent liquid?

Thanks for the comment. We agree it would great to review all whiskies after a full bottle, but then this review would be a review of a bottle nobody could find. Coming next year, Compass Box The Lost Blend from 2015. Jokes aside...I do have that and only about 2 oz left. What do we do with that? Like for real, asking :) What I'd hoped with the 10 year was that they'd be coming more forwards what their long term "house" style might feel like as they start to create a core range. Not just a one off or "work in progress" type offering. Sadly this wasn't that so...we'll keep waiting. All that said, I think it's time we try some Raasay on the channel. Just had one sample of it, but THAT was good stuff! Kinda what I'd hoped these guy would be. Savory, Umamii, with rich smoke, and good casks. But odds are that was some single cask so I shouldn't get my hope up.

Haven't tried the bottle but I really like the fact that, well, sometimes whiskytube can be a bit of echo chamber. Ralfy was mentioned here and I do like his takes, but you can sort of see and hear his "ecosystem" of sorts in whiskytube. OSWA is quite obviously a product of it too, no matter how you put it. In whiskytube same whiskies get mentioned again and again and sometimes they are great, other times it seems to my taste buds that people just want to get excited about something that they can call "maybe next Springbank" and actually buy it easily. The point here being that thanks for not trying to excuse or hide your opinions. Have you guys had a chance to try the 2024 Springbank 18 (100% bourbon) or Longrow 18 (90 sherry, 10 port)?

Yes, a lot of hype here with Ardnamurchan, which ends up seeming like…just hype. Granted, I’ve only had the AD/ NAS 46% release. Maybe it’s better at cask strength, but the AD/ was…fine? Reminiscent of Clynelish but young. I swore it off until it hit 10, but this one sounded underwhelming, from WB reviews and lack of peated casks, so I left it alone. Made me wonder if, like Clynelish, it needs to be 14ish. Frankly, I have a 9-year-old ex-bourbon Linkwood that vastly outpaced that AD/. I think its largely because you guys were going into this feeling like Springbank got cheated out of an award and how could Ardnamurchan be better. Kind of subconsciously defending Springbank in a way. For context that wasn't a good way to go about this as it was unfair. Here's why... The OSWAs Award has a rule that if one award has been won three years in a row, they d automatically win a "TRIFECTA" award in that category, and will not be eligible for the main award to allow others deserving a chance to shine. So Ardnamurchan won Best Distillery of the Year because Springbank wasn't eligible. Next year however Springbank will be eligible again, so it won't be a surprise if it reclaims the title once more. Just need to keep perspective that Ardnamurchan is transparent and a company full of integrity. You can scan QR codes to get further details on the bottle in hand. Despite their popularity they do not price gauge or take advantage of their customers. Also their younger NAS spirits have wrecked the pants off of other established aged stated products on the market. The influence on this 10 year old was actually more bourbon than the PL Champagne. The annual release for the PL Champagne bottling is their most popular release and sells out fast and never reaches the shelves. If you want to judge the real champagne influence that is the bottle to seek. I think you will be shocked with that one. This 10 Year old only have the slight creamy mouth feel that went away too quickly in this one. It is heavy on the bourbon influence not the Champagne.

Springbank was not eligible for the “best distillery” award at the OSWAs because it has won 3 times in a row. That still doesn’t make Ardnamurchan’s win any less ridiculous. But it's hard to get into nuances with 3 people and our intent was to just have fun with that, not get into a detailed analysis of the awards...which named a whisky not made in 2024 whisky of the year 2024...

it sounded suspicious. 🙃

@@topshelfdustin3060everyone is mentioning Springbank because Keith asked how Ardnamurchan could be named best distillery over Springbank at the top of the video. It’s because Springbank wasn’t eligible. You guys can be a bit adversarial with your viewers. Maybe not the best way to build your small channel. Chill out, it’s just whisky.

@@rivenbeef apologies if that came off adversarial. I was laughing about it :) I fully know why it came up. And was just agreeing with you on the rest.

Please continue calling out these, enough people have been duped by these "integrety malts" that have the specs but add nothing in terms of flavor or complexity, i had a regular ardna 46%, which was shite 😂 I compared it to classic laddie and the laddie was so complex and mature for $10 less 😅

I "want" to like the new distilleries. I'm a whisky lover, I want more quantity product. However, being a Bears/White Sox fan I have learned to not let my want blind me to the reality. lol

@@topshelfwhisky yeah, it comes with time and consistency, I feel its too early to call Ardna the "best" when half the people in this thread itself say its a hit or miss. 🤷♂ we are in the same boat regarding football, as I am 49er faithful 😥
