An interesting mechanical failure that could have been eliminated with a couple extra grams of plastic. That's the difference between a home owner brand and a pro tool.

We had problems with air hoses getting icy & causing our pneumatic tools to fail. Foreman's solution was pouring de-icer directly into the hoses. When it did the job of clearing the line, it exited out of the ports of our tools in liquid form. Having toxic liquid de-icing agent blasted into your face by an air chisel in the middle of a blizzard is, to be frank, some fucking bullshit

I just talked about theese vibrating sanding blocks with a friend, and concluded that they don't really work, they just vibrate so the girls think the machine is doing some of the work for them. I'd bet I can do the job faster with a good sanding block and some manual labor.. Unfortunately I'm allergic to unpaid manual labor so I'l grab a rotory tool to grind down stuff every time. If its not worth using a real tool on its not worth doing at all... My mother still loves spending hours sanding down cabinet doors and tables tho..

Back in 1973 I worked in a tool shop for a short while, they sold black and decker drill amongst other things. A lot of the drill would get brought back after a short while burnt out, on one occasion when the B&D rep was in he told us that some of the B&D range motors were rated in seconds and others in minuets depending on the grade after that only the higher rated ones were stocked, some were still brought back but now we checked the numbers on the drills as it turned out people were buying the cheap ones at Woolworths breaking them then buying a good one from us and coming in a few days later trying to claim their money back. As there was not much difference other than serial numbers in those days it was easy thing to do for the unwary.

Reminds me of a very popular Makita sander back in the 80's. That damned thing didn't work for beans, which didn't stop every woodworker I knew, including myself, from buying it. Well, there weren't a lot of alternatives, back then. Problem was, it vibrated the hell out of your hand, while the sandpaper part mostly didn't move at all. So damn glad when Delta came out with an electric dual orbiting sander that actually sanded.

Dynabrade is a wonderful brand of palmsander if you have the air compressor to keep up with it. Mirka gold is a better match than klingspor in terms of abrasives. Just my two cents.

Follow the clues before you get cutting on the housing. Pad support had some whiting where the the sander probably fell on the pad. It shoved the cam/weight up the motor shaft some. Cam is now rubbing the housing. Pull it back down the shaft a couple of 0.010" and it will be the Cockford Ollie

I have the same sander. Intermittent death, then dead dead. The rocker in the on/off switch was packed with dust (schmoo?). I think the switch wuzzn't designed to be disassembled, but it wuz. And then it wuz un-disassembled. And now it's not dead anymore. Except when it's gets unplugged. That happened about 12 years ago. I bought it 16 years ago.

make sense that one is flexures is heading out. it mainly used by a right handed person. when its in your hand, more pressure is in your inner hand then outer, which would translate to the left rear flexure worn out

It’s funny you happen to be doing a tear down of this particular B&D Mouse sander. I’ve actually have been using this same sander for the past couple of days, as it was all I had, other than bigger orbital sanders, and air sanders. I’ve been using it for just sanding some drywall to prep for paint. I find it very suitable for what I’m using it for lol. Definitely not a quality tool, but it get the job done. Mine is working properly though, and has clearly more power than this one.

And somewhere here is a metal one from the 1970's that still chooch's a treat! (And that's in spite of a bit of sparkiness at the brushes.) But it probably lacks some of the stuff to keeps the angry pixies at bay if anything goes wrong with the electricals. Flextures instead of some kind of slip bearing or bushing on the one in the video seems doomed to fail at some point.

Those flex posts will fail fast if you use alot of downward pressure while sanding which reverts vibrations from the base to the internals instead of the target surface for said sanding.

Unfortunately sanding is a big part of what I do for a living, so I understand the need for a proper functioning sander. But black and decker? Built to last long enough to afford another. I ran over my old Matco DA a couple weeks ago on accident. I can't get all of the odd vibration out of it, but it still works after replacing the pad. Built to last many years, and able to survive getting run over by a full size Dodge pickem up.

This is a question; not necessarily a suggestion, but when plastic parts get flimsy like that, would it help to rough up some surfaces and fill in/reinforce with epoxy such as JB Weld? That might stiffen up something flimsy, no? Let me know what you think.

While in school one of my EE professors was telling us he worked for a power tool manufacturer and a dirty trick the company would do is add resistors in with the motor to make it draw more amps on the label but still use small cheap motors. His point was rating a tool by how many amps it draws is not a good way because you can easily scam people.
