It would just be a straight line ramping up until the wrench broke. Impact wrenches on the torque absorber are putting out variable torques as they ramp up to their max, pushy is outputting consistent torque until failure.

I don't know. I've broken a few wrenches, but that backdrag factor should weigh more heavily on the overall score. That means more tools or my other hand to hold the bolt to keep it from turning. I'd say that alone would justify the extra cost of the Snap-On if only I had that kind of money.

Out of the box comparisons are great apples to apples. I have seen many say the grease or lube in the Icon are lacking and once changed/or added in some cases it's back drag is much better! This is one of the few channels I would trust to test that. Icon out of the box vs Icon post servicing!

The only snap on tools I have came in a tool box of tools I bought at an auction. Not to everyone... Don't drink and go to an auction... All I wanted was the Kennedy Tool box. I was going to dump the tool... Went through the box found 6 Snap-on wrenches. No 10mm... today they just hang on the wall.. like a 12 point rack

I ponnied up an bought the Snap-On. Right off the truck the first nut I tried to remove it broke! The truck owner, and corporate would not refund for diss-satifation. I was so disappointed. I bought the Icon for less than $200 on sale. Icon got the job done, and still going strong a year later. Stoked to watch this!

As a Snap-on owner for many years, one must remember that the Snap-on truck comes to you at your shop or place of business and shows you new tools or swaps out broken ones you have damaged. The business practice is also part of their big price for tools

You need a negative points column for price like you have for the impacts, thr Snapons might be better, but if you can buy a complete set for what one wrench costs (your k tools example vs snapon) then that has to figure into most folks buying decision.

I'm a pro, and I have had a set of Snap On ratcheting wrenches for ~15 years (flex head open/ratchet, not double), and I have never broken one. None have ever needed serviced. down-time costs us money, so we pay a lot to avoid it. I have used them in situations I was sure would destroy them, and they have survived, unscathed. I paid a lot, but they have been worth every cent!

Come from a family of auto mechanics working in both their own shops or in dealerships, just don't buy the cheapest tools your and are fine. Unless you are making $800 and hr and going to get a tool you don't have a backup for or an alternate means then maybe it is too costly. This is why for some of the specialty tools the Snap-On is worth the price, but for a standard box end set, you are wasting your money.

I’m one of the weird guys who has examples of all three brands. My Snap-On wrenches are pretty old, but still really good. I use the Gearwrench 7/16” ratcheting wrench for truck slack adjusters, and I really like it. Finally, I bought the ICON when they had a sale. I’m really pleased with those. Ratcheting wrenches have come a long way over my career, and it’s good to see that there are several good options.

You're not weird. I am in the same boat. I bought S-O for over 30 years, with some MAC and Matco mixed in (usually oversized wrenches by those brands). About 5 years ago, I fired my S-O tool truck guy. He started showing up less often, and rarely had my replacement parts even though I had requested them on multiple visits. It started to feel like he only cared about making money (I know, that is important) and less about servicing the customer now that I had a very complete collection of tools and wasn't buying as many. In a moment of frustration, I bought some ICON tools, and had the guys in the shop try them. They all thought they were as nice in the hand, and as functional, as the S-O tools, and they started buying them for themselves. Make no mistake, there is a sense of refinement with S-O tools, but because the ICONs are basically copies, I can't tell the difference when in use. My mistake was buying a very comprehensive set of Gearwrench tools for my sons. They are good-ish, just not great. The biggest issue is the chamfer on the sockets and box ends of the wrenches. It is too pronounced and too often allows them to cam off a fastener, rounding it or burring it. It might sound petty, but a small feature like this is enough to make me refuse to use them.

ratchet wrenches aren't really used for nut busting torque...usually you loosen the nut then finish it off with the ratchet wrench...I get the test shows extreme situations but generally speaking, the I con and Gear Wrench will do the trick 98% of the time...the snap on will get the other 2%....for 800 bucks???, not sold on that unless you like giving the tool guy money every week, which they LOVE

I've had Mountain wrenches break. Trying to get them replaced under warranty was like pulling teeth. I've had Icon wrenches break too. Still having to run to the store is inconvenient. If those Snap On wrenches are stronger that might mean the job will get done _that day_ rather than after _running to harbor freight_ or _in a few weeks_ trying to warranty the Mountain wrenches.

Here's some additional tid-bits. Mountain is a tool line by ISN or Integrated Supply Network. A massive tool warehouse in the USA that sells to a lot of tool retailers. They used to have a somewhat extensive line in Mountain, then developed Monster tools and Mountain got left behind except for these wrenches which always sold well. Monster tools got sued into oblivion by Monster energy drinks because they used a similar color and sort of font like idiots, so only a few tools like these remain from their old line left. Their most recent line is K-Tool also discussed here, same set.

I bought the same snap on 13/15 as it is the most used sizes for me mainly working on GM and it is well worth the money. Dealer offered the entire set for $675 and dang near went for it. But its only really worth the extra money in the smaller sixes as shown. The larger sizes don't matter as much and is why i still have my 120xp gearwrench set.

I have sets of TEKTON GearWrench and Carlisle of these style . Only Carlisle is switchable and sometime these change direction but these are life savers many times so the switch doesn’t bother me. I didn’t pay Snap On price for all three sets total not even talking about the switchable set which is even crazy for a daily mechanic for living like me person. Never broke any of the ones I have after a number of years of use.

I think all of these are good enough for professional use. If I get that Icon set, I will use my drill or impact driver to spin the shit out of them to break them in so there is less resistance. The manager of your Harbor Freight is not supposed to be doing that with returns. What they normally do is replace the piece that broke and then put the partial set on a shelf at a sale price.

Some of us prefer quality over chinesium garbage. Don't get me wrong, I am far from a "Snap-On fanboi". Most of my tools are old school Craftsman, SK, Armstrong, Lang, Proto, Wright, etc, but most of those other companies have "dried up" when it comes to quality Made in USA tools; leaving Snap-On with little competition in that regard.

You can still find some NOS SK tools, and I've even bought some myself recently, due to the quality for the price, but you can kiss that warranty goodbye unless you're OK with having your Made in USA SK replaced with a Made in China SK (I'm not - I'll throw it in the trash if it breaks and by a Wright or Snap-On). I do have a decent amount of SK tools before they got bought out, but again, I now look at them as "disposal" IF they ever break (which is not likely, as they are very good quality tools) since any replacement would be a lesser chinesium tool that I don't want.

That said, a lot of ratchets I’ve bought, i take apart brand new, and they have almost no lube inside. I think they do that so the clicks sounds louder.

I have a tiny little icon ratchet that holds quarter inch screwdriver bits. The ratcheting mechanism was really stiff so I put a quarter inch bit in it and hooked my impact driver up to it. I spun it really fast in each direction several times. That broke it in rapidly and made it work a lot better. I basically put many years of wear on the ratchet in a couple of minutes. The tool has a lifetime warranty and it works great now.

Those Snap-On wrenches performed extremely well. But for those of us that can't afford them, the Mountain version was $129 when I bought it pre Biden. They are $152 currently. Much cheaper than those overpriced Icons.

Is it possible to maintenance / repair the Gearwrench and ICON wrenches? Or are they non-serviceable? I started looking for a set of flex head ratcheting "offset" wrenches after watching the open end wrench video. Finding wrenches with the offset feature wasn't easy. Very informative video, saved me weeks of frivolous searching and research. Great to these super versatile wrenches tested. Hopefully viewers can suggest 3 more worthy brands for testing.

I bought the icon ones a year or so ago but i never use them. As stated in the video, the reversing switch is too sensitive and easy to bump. The other reason being that up in the salt belt the spline drive is always getting stuck on fasteners and the flex makes it difficult to unstick.

In metric spanners NEVER ever buy sets! About 60% of them you will hardly ever use! This is in stark contrast with AF and Ww sizes. Having been into British motorcycles for about 30 years, I came to respect the non-metric spanners and their spacings: ALL sizes could be applied. For metric go for 10 & 13, 17 & 19 and 7 & 8. Hard to find, but a brand like Proxxon will cater for such items. I always went for ring/open ended spanners. My experience with ratcheting spanners is from more then a decade ago and very, very short lived, minutes rather then hours. My Brand of choice was Stahlwille for AF and Gedore for Ww. My first set of sockets, Ratchet, T-bar extension and 10 - 24mm sockets is from ETC, which I bought in 1971. The Ratchet is the only part that is missing due to having failed.

My metric bikes need 7,8,10,12,13,14, 15, 17, and 22. No regrets over the Wright tool combination wrench set, although I had to grind down some misc wrenches for clearance. If Honda and Yamaha could state the wrenches and sockets they designed engines around that'd be appreciated

@@snoozzzer Honda, from my decades old experience, applied 'metric' brake hose lines: M10 x 1.125. Suzuki, I think it was, used M11 x 1.???. Being from Europe: so much for metric...

ive found the 80 tooth ratchet mechanism to be really robust in the thin ratchet snap on makes. if i cant get it with that i need 1/2" or bigger.

I would like to see a more real-world usage case with pushy as well - do some tests with 12.9 fasteners with actual heads of the usual sort of hardness rather than a surplus of ultra-hard tool steel. Which one works better on those godawful thin profile nissan cheese grade bolts?

These were all tested on mild steel hex equivalent to Grade 5 / Metric 8.8. Box ends just don't play around

Very interesting. Been happy with my Mountains for a while now, and paying for the whole set what 1 Snappy costs. Legit improvements by Snap-on though, and if I were wrenching professionally...naw, I'd still keep the Mountains.

I really like this design but unfortunately these types of wrenches are not available in our market ( buying them in the US are going to be very expensive because of the delivery charges). I bought Chinese alternative which doesn't have sticking offset part and the head is not locking. This is definitely worse alternative but it is what it is.

​​@@greasemonkeymechanic1 it absolutely does matter... The icons are non serviceable and you have to return the whole set when you warranty them. That's just hilariously wasteful. It's not like harbor freight is picking out the good wrenches, refurbishing them (wait they can't bc they're non serviceable), replacing the broken one and then re selling the set. Y'all would be mad if they did too. But with the snap on. I can call my dealer and he can stop by with a baggie of parts and I can fix the 1 broken side of 1 wrench instead of trashing 5 whole wrenches. It's also not just about when I fails. Cleaning and lubing are also "service" now I can take care of the tool and probably see when it's starting to fail and then I can preemptively call the dealer so I can fix it before it brakes. Take care of the things that take care of you... Also, snap on isn't for 'most consumers'. When you're a hobbyist, you probably aren't going to use it frequently enough or hard enough to need that warranty. If you do, you're probably using the wrong tool anyway. But when it's your trade and it gets used and abused every day it being serviceable is important and again, I don't wanna trash the rest of my set, because 1 broke. Serviceability absolutely matters. Your line of thinking is why we live in a cheap disposable world.

​​@@DampNoodlesThat's not really true about having to return the whole set in the vast majority of stores. The policy on the torq test channel guys store is not the normal policy. Every Harbor Freight that I have been in will replace just the bad tool, and then the partial set that they removed the replacement tool from goes on a special shelf at a sale price. The manager of his store is not even really supposed to be doing that, because that is not their official policy that you have to have the entire set to get a warranty. I've been buying and returning tools at Harbor Freight for over 20 years, they have never made me return the whole set at three different stores. Repairability does not matter on these.

You also have to wait for a truck to show up and hope they have the parts to fix your tool with them that week where with icon you can walk in and get it replaced literally anytime.

If anything the fact they can fix a wrench instead of replacing the whole set should make it easier for them to compete on price.
