@@vaderdudenator1 Yeah pretty much. It had no power. I found that i would usually have to loosen any fastener first with a spanner or ratchet first. So any time and convienince you gain with an electric ratchet, is lost with double handling tools. And it was still kinda bulky when you compare to a regular ratchet/spanner. I have had about 3 different models of the 12v 3/8" impact gun and found that a far supperior tool. At times where that wont fit, i simply use a ratchet, or ratchet spanners. I work mobile on industrial/construction/earthmoving machinery and have to carry tools into site or on to the machine. So i like to keep my tool bag full of only the most efficient and usefull tools. And the 3/8" ratchet simply was a waste of space and wieght. And wasnt near as usefull as i thought it would be when i purchased it.

I don't have the 1/2" version, but i have the 3/8th version. The thing that's wearing out is the plastic casing from "reefing" on it. I can tell it's starting to get a little sloppy / loose. Other than that it's been holding up great. Also, i don't think i've ever had a switch die on any of the Makita tools at work, heavy industrial setting. It's always something different, but never the switch. Just food for thought.

I work in the automotive industry and this ratchet and the M12 Fuel 3/8" drive ratchet are used more often than I thought they would be. The 3/8" has a bit more torque than the 1/2" one does, but that could also just be that it spin-a-ma-things at a higher velocity than the bigger counterpart. I have yet to break anything on either of the two electric ratchets, but one of my coworkers has gone through 3 of them. The usual suspect for him is the paddle switch pin, or the circuit board.

My guess is if you rotate it from where you naturally hold it on the end you'll easily break the plastic first. You'd need to choke up about halfway and hold above the motor if you're going to be able to break anything metal, but I'd assume that nobody is going to do that since you'd have to rotate twice as hard and it's not the natural place to hold a ratchet.

Tossed in many tool bags for road trips and fallen off wing or ladder to the hangar floor more than once and still strong. Batteries still click in strong and never had one pop out yet.

Finally! I was hoping you would review this and in Oct when the Milwaukee cordless right angle die grinder comes out also that. One thing worth mentioning about the commentary on the new fine tooth ratchets: Im not sure if this is a recent development but a 120 tooth ratchet I purchased about 3 months ago is a dual pawl rather than a single, finer tooth pawl. In the dual pawl assembly two pawls alternate engagement with the center gear. This allows the gear teeth on the pawls to be BIGGER but the pawls themselves are thinner. Something I found interesting anyway - my 120 tooth has taken a beating flawlessly.

My impact died, and the little m12 3/8 ratchet ripped out 24 8 inch lag bolts from a deck without any complaint. Was hotter than hell but did it on one of the big batteries without replacement. Tip for getting extra starting torque is hold it loosely and let er start swinging around then give it a good grip. Easily 2-3x more torque while spinning vs at dead stop. That mashed up bit on the left side of the clamshell housing at 3:22 is likely an intentional sprue gate from the injection mold. These are generally ported directly into an existing rib or feature on the "inside" of the part, and manually trimmed flush after being ejected from the mold. These gates are only used on single-cavity injection molds. Multiple cavity molds would likely switch over to a 3-plate design and use at least one pin gate per part.

I don't think there is a HF version (though it's been a while since I made the pilgrimage) but there is a Home Depot Husky brand version that I've seen discounted to $49 ($79 when I was there a couple of days ago). I don't think it's brushless though.

The HF brand one is nice but it's only 3/8" and it's longer than the M12 Fuel. Even the Fuel ratchet is significantly larger than the the older M12. Compare the sizes and your needs.

Had mine almost 2 years and love it for home-gamer auto repair. Saves a lot of time in tight spaces and the light is awesome for nooks and crannies wherefor you need to get to bolts. Word of caution its got max-knuckle-busting rating when tightening in aforementioned tight spaces the torque will move the body in the opposite direction of tightening once you lock that bolt up and if your not paying attention ur knuckles what hold the body get crushed...

Used one in heavy a duty automotive shop, dropped it and the screws that hold the case to the motor/ ratchet assembly came out. I continued to use it for another year till it took a bath in coolant. It worked for another week then let the smoke out.

Been running the older brushed one for years now. Daily use in underground mining. Haven't broken one. Did have an issue with the ratchet direction change being difficult to operate (might have had something crack in the head or some debris got in there?) but it was replaced for new under warranty about 2 years after purchase. The only thing that will break these tools or batteries are apprentices.

As a professional Automotive Technician, these Milwaukee Ratchets are great. I have an abundance of Milwaukee over Snap On and they hold up against abuse on a daily basis. You should tear down some Snap On Cordless or even Matco. I'd say do Mac but Mac is made by DeWalt so there's no point since you've covered it already. But would love to see what your say about Snap On over priced 14.4 volt stuff. Keep up the good Videos

Used my snap-on air ratchet for the vise jaw bolts but had the tendency to smash my knuckle and was a bit slow on the rpms. Was considering the Milwaukee but didn't feel like it would last or could handle a little bit of coolant occasionally. I ended up getting an AIRCAT 803-RW (impact air ratchet) 3 times the rpms and impact drive so don't break your knuckles when the bolt bottoms out. Been using it for a while now and would recommend.

the most common failure i hadon those ratchets (beside brush wear on non fuel models, repaired like 10 of them by now) is a metal spring that pushes the contact bar down inside the trigger rusting away and breaking. never had a pcb, mechanics or brushless motor failure just one snapped off 1/4 head. the damn batteries allways break off their retaining clips.

Old M12 ratchets lasts about a year for me before they lose torque. For me failure was in that small pin and bushing wearing out enough to be able to spin around freely without moving that "water drop" outter ratcheting part. But then there's no problems with warranty if you remember to take a picture of the sticker with serial number.

Yup, similar story building an early Fox body for the drag strip(because of course...), my nephew's first real car build. Definite fan of Milwaukee, both for working in construction, and for doing weekend fun stuff. I think what people misunderstand is that, it's not that no other brand is as good as Milwaukee, let alone that Milwaukee is "always the best"; rather, it's that, for better or for worse, I know what the hell I'm getting with their products, AND that I WILL be able to use the tool to its death thanks to Milwaukee's awesome battery support.

Maybe the larger openings for the fan allow it to self clean as being used for automotive work grease is a factor that carpentry tools don't see so much. Smaller openings can still let saw dust particles escape where as grease would plug up. Having a large opening the grease blobs could fit the openings and fling out with circumforencial force?

I've had a 3/8 one for a while now. Zero issues with the tool (I'm a mechanic, use it every day, it's fantastic), it's the batteries that have failed for me. The larger 6.0Ah batteries have an issue in that the locking tabs crack where they meet the case during regular use and eventually fail.

Collision repair tech here. I’ve used the original ratchet @ 1/4” drive since I started the trade (9 years ago now). And swapped over to the fuel version the day it was available in Canada. The original one failed on at the head of the ratchet. One from shattering on the supports for the pawl and the other is the pawl mechanism failing ( worn out teeth. Third brushes version is now back up. In the two years now of using the brushless one, I haven’t seen or noticed any failure mechanically from the tool, but I have noticed the battery case breaking from drops. Have had the ratchet head take a direct impact from a fall at 3 feet onto concrete and was fine. The fuel version definitely has more umpf to it, but the brushes version has more stall torque to it. Hard to explain. However the fuel one doesn’t need to be charged for days. I use it day in and out, where as the brushes version, it’s every other day it need a charged pack. Thanks for the video AVE. Been waiting to see you do a BOLTR on this for a long time. I might be able to send you an old 1/4” brushes one for tear down. ( I highly suspect the brain box on this one). Just got to see what the Milwaukee service centre says.

I think you overestimate the heat from the FETs, modern FETs are very very low on resistance nowadays as long as they switch em on and off hard with good drivers (which are cheap and easy now) they just don't waste much.
@engjds3 жыл бұрын
Even sub ohm resistance will still develop some heating wattage at that kind of amperage. Yeah driver design has a big factor, I remember some of the old ones leading to double conduction nuke smoke events.

You were putting quite a bit of torque on that plastic body part of the wrench when playing with your vise…wonder if that bugger would split in half if you put too much force on the back end of her since the metal doesn't go to the end of the handle.

I have the 3/8 non fuel and I think the rotating pin assembly or ratchet mechanism is wearing out. As I go to loosen a fastener, if it's to tight to loosen it used to torque out, cut the motor and flash the lights but recently its been vibrating the mechanism back and forth. It looks like its rotating but in reality its just moving back and forth.
