I just took my new 50 cc out for a neighborhood spin....loved it. Faster than a golf cart in this 55+ neighborhood, faster than my beloved pedal-powered mountain bike - great for getting around town. Looking forward to getting acclimated. Have been riding my mountain bike for conducting local errands for years and years - throw stuff into a back pack, but I'm getting a little old and creaky. This scooter is the key help.

I'm 14 and in the US (Ohio to be specific of state) I can get a probationary moped license. I use an 80CC Bike motor which goes ~50 miles an hour. I might be getting an actual scooter from my grandparent's soo and I will have a license to cover that as well. I like taking long rides through my city and the 50cc scooter goes 35 mph which is more than enough for me to zip around from the grocery store to wherever else I need to get to, which isn't a lot of places but it's still good to have one on hand if the 80cc kit needs a little bit of work. I can get one from 400-~3500 dollars which is easy money and I'd be grateful to have an actual moped/scooter for commutes.

I've had a bunch of cars over the years but always kept a scooter as a backup vehicle.. then I relied solely on a Chinese scooter for about a year.. paid $400 for it and spent another $200 on a 72cc kit and a handful of other things. Does just fine in my city. Registration is $6, good for three years and insurance is another $100 a year. They're dirt cheap as far as transportation goes, especially if you do your own work. I've owned three Chinese scooters and have had generally good luck with them. My current one is nearing the 10kkm mark and 8k has been with the $70 bore kit. I recently decided to just get a 250cc motorcycle instead of getting another car but am tempted to hang onto the scooter. It isn't worth much at all but has been really reliable for me.. all I've really done since the rebuild is change the oil.. which it does burn a fair amount of. Pretty sure it's the rings which I can change out in about two hours but haven't bothered yet.

Wow that's quite the story! Yes scooters definitely make for cheap reliable transport so you really can't go wrong with one
@jseden
@jseden 4 жыл бұрын
KiwiCarLife thanks. the only big issue is long distance trips. I know it's totally possible and that people do it but anything beyond 20 miles away is a bit of a chore and roads above 35mph get kinda sketchy.. with the bore kit and other mods, it'll hit the low 40s on flat. Hills can also be an issue, hence getting the motorcycle. Still, as local transportation they're great and the ease of parking can't be beat. It averages around 70mpg, the 250 is about the same there.
@KiwiCarLife
@KiwiCarLife 4 жыл бұрын
@@jseden Yeah and the reality is, most people when they buy a scooter, immediately start saving for a motorbike straight after they get it haha. They're a great entry into the two wheeled world, but not really something you'd want to keep riding long term. Hence why I bought a 125cc scooter, and then in turn a car (or 3)

*2.5-years ago I bought a 'mint condition' '08 Honda 'Metropolitan' for $1150 from 'Craigslist'...and it's the best money I ever spent for any vehicle!* *With several 'minor upgades' and the engine/exhaust left untouched, it will hit 42-43mph. easily w/a230lb. rider on it (me!) and still carry an enormous amount of groceries home!* *The 'Mighty 50' engine is as 'quite as a grave' and utterly dependable and will last forever due to the 'liquid-cooling system' that insures the engine will never over-heat regardless of temps. and 'wide-open-throttle' 90% of the time I ride it...it's amazing how good that engine and power-train is just after 10-thousand miles on it!* ( *I replaced tires & brakes w/Honda approved parts, as well as a new 'AGM' battery in the last 4-months* ) *The 'saddle-seat' is huge...and so is the storage under it where I keep everything I might need for a break-down or flat and an emergency 'Red Fuel' jump-starter' as well* ( *I had to use the 'jumper' and it worked perfectly, so I recommend having one* ) *I also carry a tire-repair kit that has CO2 cartridges for 'instant air'* *Regardless of what the future holds...the Honda scooter STAYS no matter what, because I can easily fit it thru the house doors and keep it safe from thieves and 'rotten little bastards' with rocks or BB-guns and I can move it or pick it up easy* *At 65 I think this machine will last for my lifetime...then it's someone else's turn to 'have a go' because IF anything should be damaged or simply 'worn-out' (like me) I can get replacement-parts easily and fast since Honda has made so many of this same scooter, and the prices are very reasonable even for genuine 'Honda' parts* *Whenever I pull-in to a market or gas-station, I always hear the same things like "How fast will it go?" "Where did you get it?"and "How much did that cost?" something that never happened before in my life!*

Hello, I am a 65 year old Canadian that has enjoyed ten trips to New Zealand over the decades. I normally come down for four months to escape our -40 c winters, I cycle tour NZ via peddle bike. While those decades of French fries and hamburgers took there toll....Heart attack, so my cycling touring days are over. Still can ride 60 kilometers every day, yet the stresses of mountain passes with a loaded touring bike are just too much. So my thoughts are a little 50 cc scooter and cheat death on the bike again. Looking at 75 kilometer days with a full size back pack. I am about 100 kilograms and maybe 20 kilo's in back pack. Can a little 49 cc scooter get me around New Zealand on the backroads I use to cycle both North and South Islands. Each year I would ride down East Coast of both Islands and back up the West Coasts, about 7,500 kilometers a year in New Zealand. It's the big hills that I use to push the bike up can a 50 cc scooter push up those grades with the weights I have described? .Up and over the Coromandel to Te Rerenga hill etc. I am not concerned about speed, I use to push the peddle bike over the hill ( heart is no longer strong enough to do that pushing for a hour straight) can the bikes power plant and transmission handle this? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated, rethinking my mid age childhood.

That's understandable, that said 4 strokes get much better fuel consumption, you don't have to put oil in them all the time, and they are much cleaner for the environment. Also I rode a 2 stroke and didn't find it noticeably faster than my 4 stroke. However I can definitely agree that if you want as much speed and power as possible, 2 stroke is generally the way to go, but there is advantages to both sides

@@astrallarium It depends, an cheap chinese 4-stroke has a sensor which mesures the speed of the clutch bell to regulate top speed. Otherwise just get a new cdi/ecu. For 2-stroke it is more about removing physical restrictions, most of them have a restriction in the exhaust and in the variator. Otherwise you can get big-bore kits for both of these. If you want more speed and torque, get a 2-stroke If you want more efficiency and beter mileage, get a 4-stroke.

Buy a used 49cc that is broken and replace the engine and cut with a 150cc gy6. After some mild fabrication of new mounts you would have a much better performing machine. Climbing hills and keeping up with the traffic won't be any problem. You still must understand that the upgraded version isn't a stable high speed vehicle! It will be much faster but it's not something you drive onto the freeway because it is not a stable handling bike at higher speed.

Hi, I’m from uk London, I’m looking for a short term ride until I can get a car, Walked too much hate it now. I can’t stand the public transport anymore the buses are so stuffy, I patiently waited but it’s killing me, I’m looking for a ride, will buying 50cc scooter be convenient? Can I ride it with provisional license?

I'm considering buying a scooter. I'm in Christchurch, and I can buy a new Forza Ciclone 50cc for $1,600 and a new Suzuki UZ50 for $3,200 (both excluding 'on road costs'). Also considering a good second hand Honda Today 50cc, if one comes up on Trademe after I have the money available. There have been a few good, low mileage ones come up, $2,000 and $2,500, for what *appear* to be almost new scooters. I think I'm leaning towards the Suzuki. It's a well-known brand with a good reputation. And I am trusting my life to it. Also, I think it's a better looking machine, but that's a minor thing. Did you consider the Forza? If so, why did you decide on the Suzuki? I get it. They are slow. But I've been cycling a lot to save petrol, and it will still be a huge step up from that. Much quicker and less tiring.

I wil be getting a 50 for making deliveries. my area is in a 200 year old town so there are stop signs every 50 feet so performance isnt an issue. BUT i do have several hills. I will have a bug bore kit installed. just so the hills wont slow me down. 50 bucks to double the power is just to good to pass up :). there is also no parking were I live or it is pay to park. and a 50 gives me more options to park. it will alow me to get closer to my deliveries buy a few blocks and time is money.
