I am amazed that people consider male flutists/flautists homosexual. A flute is an instrument. I am a male flautist myself and I am straight. An instrument cannot indicate a persons sexuality, regardless of how feminine the instrument is perceived. The perception that the flute is a feminine instrument is ridiculous. The metal flute was even invented by a male - Theobald Boehm, and during the era in which it was invented musicians were basically all male, due to the inequality held towards females - it is surprising to me that flutes are considered feminine now.

The fact that the flute was mainly a male dominant instrument back in the 16 - 17 hundreds. I wonder if Benjamin Franklin was gay, he did have like, idk, 30 flutes. I get you, what does an instrument have that makes you straight or gay. The world is messed up.

So many comments on here of “I’m gay or I’m straight”, etc. Surely the point is nobody really should even care what sexuality a flautist is, whether they’re male or female, (because nobody has mentioned lesbian flautists). We are all musicians and that’s what matters. Music transcends and enhances love. It does not discriminate. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤

I can understand why many people would think male flute players are gay. When I was younger(age 9-13) I saw most instruments as gender neutral. I guess I was wrong about that, haha. As a male that played flute in the high school band, I never liked being surrounded by so many girls. It's like going out shopping with a whole bunch of girls and all they talked about were girl stuff and their guy crushes. I remember the first day in summer band camp, I was the only guy in a room full of girls (over 50 girls). I hated being the only guy in the room and I really wanted to leave. I know this sounds kind of counter-intuitive, but I think it was a character building experience.

Hmm, are you asking if we're happy and gay when playing? Are you asking if we're gayly enraptured by the music? Okay, I'm not gay, but then, I'm not a good flute player, either. I grew up with children who turned out to be transgender. I worked with people for years without knowing that they were gay. Working as a photographer, I did portfolios for women who were/used to be men. If people really read the Bible, they would know 1) that the greatest commandment is to love and 2) you're not supposed to judge others. Personally, I know a lot of gay, lesbian and a few transgendered people who are much nicer, kinder, and better people than those who try to bash them. Just sit back and enjoy the music, listening to music played by a gay person won't hurt you.

Ironically, I've never come across this stereotype. I've played flute and saxophone in grade 9 and earlier before transitioning to piano. I guess it really does depend on who you're around, b/c I've not even caught an echo of this. I will say, it is funny how immature and not open-minded some people can be. I mean, "Oh, so and so plays that instrument (which genuinely makes them happy), so that means their sexual alignment must also adhere to x-stereotype." What? When does musical expertise ever indicate sexuality? Why, equally ridiculous to hear would be someone saying that all male painters are "flamboyant" and prefer bananas to cherries...

I’m a flutist and I’m gay and I have male friends who are flutist and aren’t gay. I don’t get how a musical instrument can make people think a certain way about someone. Just like a clarinet some people call it a girl instrument. Around half the clarinet section at my high school is pure guys and only 1 of them is bi. And then the flute section has 1 guy and he is straight. An instrument can say your sexual orientation for you. The main instrument I play is trumpet and I’m gay, I can play the flute too and I’m gay, I can also play clarinet and I’m gay. My friend he can play the same instruments that I can and he’s straight. Again a musical instrument can say what your sexual orientation is !!!!

Hello there! I have decided to make myself known because this channel has been my life for oh about two years. I have watched every video, with interest. I just want to say that you are my inspiration. I started flute two years ago, which is how I found this channel. I wanted to get as much info and tips on playing that I could. *some backround* I play violin and have been for about 7 years. I am now a senior in high school. I started flute because I was sick of people bagging on strings and how terrible we sound and how our instrument was soooo *easy*. So to spite all the haters, I picked up flute. Watched your videos. Got a private teacher. Practiced. HARD. and made continental league honor band first year. Principal flute first year. And lettered in music. Your videos are fun to watch and your personality is beautiful! Without your videos I probably wouldn't be as passionate about flute as I am, and now I have decided to go to college for music education with an emphasis on FLUTE performance and violin performance. *a bit ambitious, but I feel unstoppable* Thank you so much for existing. I appreciate your existance.

So bullying exist... and some people somehow found a way to get an idea of what they could possible do to me because first of all I'm a guy and plays the flute and described as a "Gay Kid" and a "Loser". I was practicing and a portion of their group mates entered the practice room I was in, took my flute, got out of the practice room, and smashed my flute on the ground. And I didn't get to play the flute anymore.

Awesome video. I'm a straight male flutist in the USC Trojan Marching Band, and I'm currently the only one. The flute section is definitely seen as the "girly" section, and I feel like I've had to act more masculine than I usually am just to show people that I'm not girly or gay. It's funny though because a gay trumpet player asked if I was gay, but he apparently thought I was because I "had the gestures" of a gay person when I was playing at a volleyball game. So I mean yeah the majority of this "all male flutists are gay" mentality may come from straight people, but I've actually experienced it from a gay person. I'm still trying to deal with the male flutists stigma, but that's not gonna stop me from being the best flutist I can be. Thank you so much for this video, you're so awesome! :)

Thanks for all of your vids! Your approach and honesty and fun and talking skills and your personality and beautiful face and everything helped me be encouraged to continue. I played trombone 7 through 12th grade, guitar since 10th grade, have had leads on stage in summer musical theatre for years, have taken many acting classes in NYC and Atlanta, workshops, play piano, write songs, play tenor saxophone in two big bands, take local acting classes, have an agent, and have sung in and directed choirs for twenty years. I am not bragging. I am not even impressed with any of it. I am simply stating that if anyone should be considered "gay" for being in show business and loving the arts, well, that should be me. But I am totally straight. I have the same attitude as you about the "gay" thing - it matters not to me at any level, and is about as important as a person's favorite color. I love learning flute as a middle aged male (that would mean an old man to you in his forties, hahahaha), and since I am also in an orchestra now, I wanted to be able to double on sax and flute just in case I am needed. Our current flutists happen to be female, but I don't think they will care about my sexual orientation when we play flute parts together. I guess I wrote too much for a FB post, but I did want to tell you how much your vids have helped me as a first year flute player. Just know that you have sincere and honest fans out here who really do appreciate what you do, and the fact that you enjoy it makes it even greater! BTW, every time I carefully wipe down the flute after each practice session, I remember your saying something like "Be gentle, it's your baby". Yes, it is, and gay or straight can take a walk.

Treading Lightly... Glad I came across this. I'm a new sub to this channel so I'm sorry to dig up an older video. I am a heterosexual male and have been that for most of the 50 years I've live on this earth. I can confirm that this misconception is true. When I was in middle school (back then it was call Jr. High) I was the first ever, or at least it felt like it, male flutist in the concert/marching band. First day I was labeled as a Fag for playing the flute. Everyone called me Bernadette cuz my name is Bernard. I was miserable all those 2 years, so much so, as soon as I was promoted from Jr. High to High School I gave up the flute. Treading More Lightly... I'm not saying being labeled gay is a bad thing. Please understand that I was an awkward Jr. High hetero male student (yes I was sure back then, believe me) who wanted to be accepted in a group but was ostracized simply because I played an instrument that was only allowed to be played by girls. I'm trying to pick-up the flute again, that's why I subbed your channel. I really miss playing the flute, such a beautiful instrument.

I'm a straight flutist, I started on the sax but fell in love with the sound of the flute. I don't think it matters at all your sexual persuasion when it comes to playing an instrument, what matters is your love of music. I loved this video. Really really nicely done and very well said. Not that it matters, but I am straight. I found this video extremely interesting because I have played guitar forever, and then decided to start playing Violin when I turned 40. Truthfully, my first thought was, will people think I am gay? Then I realized, this is a stupid stereotype probably because the Violin is a sweeter sounding instrument...not typically a manly thing. But, more importantly the immediate reaction was a subconscious thought that a little consciousness knocked right out of the park and now I play Violin for the North Shore Symphony Orchestra. Then I thought, I should learn the flute. Again, my immediate reaction was the same subconscious thought...no different than the Violin thoughts I mentioned already. The big question is where do these subconscious stereotypes comes from? Probably a survival mechanism thing from the beginning of life. Maybe also stuff burned into the brain that was learned from childhood and being a tough male where you cannot do anything sweet...because that is girl stuff. But, more importantly than anything else I said above, a person is a person and a good person is a good person. The subconscious stereotypes might be there, but that is why we have conscience....so we can overrule such ridiculous thoughts.

I’m a male flutist and gay. In my hole time as a flautist I’ve never met a straight player.

I'm a gay guy who just started playing the flute, I didn't even hear of the stereotype until after words, but I guess i'm gonna end up filling it.

I'm a male flutist. I am 100% straight and never have been labeled as gay because I play an instrument that tends to be played by mostly girls.

I listened to Jethro Tull, Hubert laws, John Coltrane, Paul horn, Nestor Torres, and many others that nobody ever considers asking such a childish question. Cuban charanga music features the flute and is about 90% male players. This mentality is like asking if every female trumpet player, trombone player or drummer is lesbian. This thinking is like an elementary school kid.

This is a ridiculous question. I'm a straight male who has been playing flute since middle school (1972!). The question has never come up. Nor did we think the female trumpet and tuba players were lesbian. In my school, all the wind players were required to combine to form the marching band. Being in the stands during a football game with my section, me and 30 female players, was not a bad place to be.....

here’s a story of how I and my friend (also male) started playing the flute. I chose flute because i thought why not and the band director said “there’s no such as thing as a boy or girl instrument” so i was like oh, i’ll play flute. i joined band. i played flute. there were 21 flutes. there was one 1 male flutist (me). My friends story: he and his friend both chose flute together but once his friend saw that the section was all girls, he left for saxophone ( and left my friend lol)

I'm a male and play flute for the past seven year and not gay and only look at it that I had the courage to play it over all the other males in my band class

I am a flute player and I am gay. It is not an issue with me and if someone has a problem with that, then it is their problem and not mine. I also like to work on cars, trim trees with a chainsaw and many other things that people think gay men cannot do. Most of my friends are straight and they could care less if I was gay. I knew many gay men in band and they played brass instruments and percussion. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with a musical instrument.

Yeah I hate when people assume your gay , but I'm straight but it just sucks when people just assume that you are gay it's so annoying but I love playing my flute with my mother she used to play the flute in her highl school, so I love the flute but u hate when people assume things.

Man, the former colonies are weird. I thought the flute was the alpha male of the orchestra. All metal, baby, steampunk to the core. I've yet to hear a baroque flute concerto where I didn't think the flute banged the entire female violin section while the harpsichord and cellos watched in envy. Example: Vivaldi's La Notte. And playing it, there's something so forceful about it, no gliding, no plucking, no asking. Just splitting the very air in front of you and making it resonate as if you were Moses himself. Feels very Yang to me. Also flutes were played on the frontlines. And we have Frederick the Great himself to look up to.

So now I can't play flute without being considered gay? I can't have a musical flute dream? xD
@jamielivingston92899 жыл бұрын
I am a male flutist and can testify that not all make flutists are gay. Not all percussionist or brass players are straight and not all trumpet players are dicks (just most of them,) lol. Thanks for touching on this subject. Risky but I would say you nailed it. Love your videos.

Just from what I'm hearing as a flutist of undisclosed orientation, I fail to see what playing any instrument has to do with sexual orientation. The whole question strikes me more as an ignorant clinging to classic ideas of what masculinity should look like and "artsy fartsy" flute tooting fits (or doesn't) some sort of gender/orientation stereotype. I had a "friend" once who made a comment about the shape of the flute. It was just past PG-13 so I'm not going to repeat it here.
