Seems like the sweeteners are not the problem. Our relationship with food is. Also, not all artificial sweeteners are the same. I modified my diet and added a bit of monk-fruit. My labs changed for the good. My egfr increased 20 points

Love that you saw those great results! Relationship with food can definitely be an issue for a lot of people.

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener but monk fruit, stevia, allulose, erythritol, date syrup and xylitol are natural sweeteners

I eat plant based keto w/LOTS of fiber, pre, and prebiotic foods and while I admit I have a dependence on stevia, monkfruit and erythritol, I also lost over 100 lbs. through this and exercise when my doctors wanted me to do weight loss surgery. Implementing these products gives me options that keep me from overdosing on sugar, because they are healthily prepared. Personally, I think some of these studies omit certain criteria just to prove their point.

Wow, that's amazing you did that and were able to avoid weight loss surgery! We're definitely not saying someone can never consume them. Just like added sugar though, we recommend to limit them in the diet.

I don't have that problem with Monk fruit . No glycemic raise in the blood . and it didn't cause me to gain weight .In fact i'm losing weight . Ozempic could be the cause and help .

Why don't food labels count calories in fiber?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
Fiber is included in total carbohydrates on the food label. Starch, sugar and fiber are all part of total carbs and then the calories from total carbs are included on the food label.

Aren't foods sweetened with dates automatically higher in potassium?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
Dates do contain potassium. A medjool date (24 g) is ~ 165 mg potassium and a dried date (7 g) is ~ 45 mg potassium. A few dates used to sweeten a recipe that makes many servings though does not contribute a lot of potassium. Dates are also negative potential renal acid load which is a perk.

What about Allulose? Articles I read say it's a rare sugar, not artifical. I tried maple syrup that had allulose instead of other and it tastes good. It's not supposed to raise blood sugar. Your opinion on this please?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
Correct, allulose is not an artificial sweetener. It is a different form of sugar (not sucrose). It is supposed to be less sweet than sucrose. Allulose is structurally similar to fructose, but is not metabolized the same....ultimately we don't know yet exactly how it impacts gut health or other things. It can definitely be an option, but just like added sugar and non nutritive sweeteners, limiting consumption is likely best.

Sugar-free everything. But I'm still in the same place. What to use for coffee? Not dates. I heard no real solutions. How about palm sugar (at the expense of deforestation)?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
If you are adding some type of sugar (like honey or maple syrup or palm sugar) to coffee, we recommend limiting to 1 tsp portion. This can still provide plenty of sweetness but limits the added sugar to 4 g. There are great coffee creamer recipes with cashews and dates that you can make at home too. Here is a link for one on Michele's page: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYPWgJhsg82indk

It's an easy recipe. Thank you. Let's say that I am lazy and want to choose one sweetener. Which one should I choose, in general? Anything better than honey, sir or ma'am? @PlantBasedKidneyHealth

Doc, does sweet food impact the level of uric acid in people with CKD? Becomes higher or not? Please give us some explanations. Thanks
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
Foods with concentrated sources of fructose (and no fiber) can impact uric acid levels. So high fructose corn syrup, or even juice since there is no fiber.

Is regular gatorade safer than gatorade zero?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
We wouldn't recommend consuming either regularly. Or in large portions (as in the full bottle). Regular Gatorade has 34 g added sugar per bottle (8.5 teaspoons) and contains potassium and phos additives. Gatorade Zero has the potassium/phos additives but is artificially sweetened.

Some of us with the bitter gene cannot tolerate artificial sweeteners. Nothing that tastes that bad to me can not be bad for me.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth9 ай бұрын
There can definitely be a funky flavor to some with non nutritive sweeteners!
@robertcromwell97369 ай бұрын
Not just a funky flavor but a chemical aftertaste that lasts maybe an hour for me. I would just as soon siphon gasoline, the bad taste goes away sooner.@@PlantBasedKidneyHealth I will go very thirsty before I drink any artificially sweetened drink.
