TheNakedAtheist It has nothing to do with morals. It has everything to do with humility and a hunger for answers -- spiritual answers. One of the most compassionate people I know is an atheist in Ireland. And yet, he will likely suffer eternity, because he doesn't believe in his spiritual "half." You can't repair something you insist doesn't exist. That's why the only unforgivable sin is denying the Holy Spirit (the true self within). Forgiveness is repair. Repair is rescue. Rescue is waking up as a spiritual being so that continuity of consciousness no longer resides in the temporary meat, but in the permanent spirit. Many so-called Christians won't make it, because they are following ego, instead of Christ. A compassionate atheist is further ahead than many false Christians.

Such certainty as yours depends on knowledge of everything in the universe -- omniscience -- for you are implying that there is zero chance that such a thing exists, the proof of which requires such 100% knowledge. But based on your limited experience, you cannot claim omniscience... or imply it, either. There is only one unforgivable sin and you hit that nail right on the head! You seem to be somewhat intelligent, but certainty in your own limited beliefs can blind you to perception -- the very purpose for which "skepticism" was originally needed -- restraint from overzealous certainty (belief). Belief is *_effect_* (dependent on external influences), while faith is *_cause_* (independent and a source of creation). Science made its greatest breakthroughs from humility to the Truth of Reality. Today's youth have lost that humility. It's surprising though, because taking the tens of thousands of different denominations of christianity, not to mention different religions, that people are offended by the assumption that being taught these beliefs from an early age with mechanisms that hinder open inquiry and scepticism would impact on results like these. Even if you think your specific branch of your perticular religion breeds intelligent sceptical people you can't ignore that the majority of people worldwide belong to a variety of different denominations or completely different faiths where many do hinder scepticism.

within the United States population around 90% of the total population are religious in one form or another. 60% of the total amount of educated people are religious. (people with masters and PHDs) 40% of the total amount of scientist are religious. (this is an average of all the STEM fields) 7% of the total amount of "elite" scientist are religious. elite being the head of research and things of this nature. The general consensus of that study shows that with an increase of intelligence there is a decrease of religious thought.

The vicar is such a nice person. I'm sure she is a great support to her community. I just don't understand the need for a GOD in all of this? Can't we do exactly the same good things without any of the hokus pokus, the ghosts and the "prayers"? We all die and stay dead. Why is that a problem? Our lives could be so much better by simply keeping everyone honest.
@dommidavros22114 жыл бұрын
Being dead is a huge problem! The main issue is the fact that the nothingness goes on forever (which I would have a huge issue with). What really bothers me is when people say they're ok with that! There really is nothing to be ok with on this one! I want someone to scientifically prove that consciousness lasts forever!

As an atheist, I don't believe I'm necessarily smarter but I do have a better grasp of reality. Every aspect of life, for me, is analyzed from various views without simply using faith. Atheists also live happier lives because we live our lives freely without the fear of an afterlife. We are generous and caring because we know this life is it. Also, religious individuals that constantly go to Hitler and other historical monsters killing millions of people, annoy me. Those individuals didn't take actions against humanity because of atheism but because mental issues making them purely evil. All those deplorable humans never credited their actions on a lack of God while Muslims, before blowing up something or beheading people that don't believe or Christians during the Crusades did use God as their justification. I am an atheist because I don't believe in God. I don't care what you believe in. As an US Army veteran I will die to protect your freedom of religion and assembly, I just ask that you keep it to yourself. Religion is a personal relationship between you and your God. Religion should never be used to justify laws, rules or regulations. I don't go door-to-door to convince people to stop believing so others should be happy they found a life they believe in but instead they won't be happy until I believe as well. I have always said, "If people would take responsibility for their own actions, create their own lives in accordance with their beliefs and leave other to do the same...the world would be a peaceful place. Most violence in the world today is based on competing religions.

Religion is incoherent and not cohesive. Every religious person I've ever had a meaningful conversation with has had a different idea as to what the bible says and means. Which leads me to conclude that individuals make it mean what they want it to mean.

My god this christian guy drives me crazy! Except of misinterpretations and one fallacy after another this man had absolutely nothing to say. The reason for his rejection is quite obvious. If a broad religious adherence is dependent on lots of people with a low intellect then this undermines his complete faith. How can his faith be good when it relies on people being stupid. Its unquestionable that intelligent, religious people exist but if it is true that there is a significant negative correlation between intelligence and religiosity this means that in a highly intelligent society their would be no or almost no religiosity. Therefore the pertinent question every religious person would have to ask himself: should we deliberately keep us stupid in order to keep religion alive. In order to avoid this and other unpleasant questions he rather indulges in wishful thinking and fallacious arguing than critical reasoning.

Rev. Kate Bruce talks about love, kindness, and caring but don't forget that many religious people, especially christians are of the opinion that if you don't believe what they believe then you are going to hell. Looks so innocent when her and her student have a little -holier than thou- giggle about saying "I told you so" for eternity to the non-religious, or non-christian, but remember that while she laughs, in her mind, while she is 'sitting pretty' in heaven the non-believers are experiencing eternal suffering, a torture put in place by a perfectly just and "all-loving" god. There is a deeply ingrained double-think and hypocrisy to hold these beliefs together. In a nutshell, the religious see religion as being deeply loving and caring, but if you don't believe then you are dead to them, you are going to hell, and they are OK with that. That's right, if you have the audacity not to believe what they believe then THEY ARE HAPPY FOR YOU TO SUFFER IMMEASURABLY FOR ALL ETERNITY

In this context the word smart is not the right word to use. The word smart has different usages, but when it comes to psychology smart is defined as having or showing a quick-witted intelligence, being able to think quickly or intelligently in difficult situations. I think the more correct question to ask is "does atheists have a higher intelligence than theists/religious people? I believe the answer is a resounding YES! Theists tend to be more irrational, credulous, gullible, believe things for bad reasons, believe in extraordinary claims without evidence, and resort to poor reasoning and logical fallacies than atheists. On the other hand, atheists are more intelligent because they tend more towards reason, rationality, sound logic, belief based on evidence and the scientific method than theists. BUT...there are of lot of ex-theists who discovered reason, logic and evidence-based belief. So it's not always about necessarily level of intelligence, but lack of knowledge about reason, logic and rationality. People can change for the better. en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/smart

Next, if he is saying that it is odd to pose a hypothesis of this, from which to perform a study, then two responses to that: (a) no, it's not at all odd or strange - it's patently obvious who the smarter people are, and (b) even if that weren't true, scientists pose all manner of hypothesis - many that seemed strange proved to be true. The point is that the CONCLUSION supports the hypothesis in this instance.

1:40 Does faith call upon us to be open minded to the possibility that gods don't exist? 'Cos it doesn't seem like it. And "open minded to the possibility that the purely rational is not all there is to the world" - I already am open to that possibility - I embrace the reality of emotional things and spiritual feelings. Sure, emotions exist, awe exists, but that doesn't mean there's a god, nor does it mean we should ignore rationality, which is what religious folks do.

SauroniastyPL Faith is an act of reason? Shall we go to the definitions of the words? Faith is confidence or trust in a person, thing, deity, view, or in the doctrines or teachings of a religion. It can also be defined as belief that is not necessarily based on proof. Reason is the capacity for consciously making sense of things, applying logic, for establishing and verifying facts, and changing or justifying practices, institutions, and beliefs based on new or existing information. So how can faith be an act of reason if the former demands complete and obedience on a particular subject in regards if there are no evidence or good reason to support it? Speaking of philosophy, I believe in the belief of Socrates. We should always examine everything before adopting it. In fact, Buddha even stated that we should analyze everything to make sure that it makes sense to us. He even warned us of putting faith in one person or institution that claims to have the exclusive rights to the truth.

Kindness, love, creativity, caring for others, every positive trait can be derived from pure logic just by the premiss, that I want to advance rather then fight. I want that we bundle our abilities to build a better world for all of us. It is purely illogical to fight, if you want to achieve big things, because it's a waste of your resources. The extent to which this logic can be used is determined by the intelligence of an individual and furthermore gathering information (knowledge) through learning, understanding and logic will eventually lead to wisdom. Problem solved. Religion can go now pls.

Ruling out the possibility is an impossibility at the moment. But if anything a religion claiming to have a corner on anything enough to even call itself a religion is anything but open minded to possibility. It suggests something particular.

As an atheist who knows a little bit about the bible, I would like to point out that since Reverend Bruce is a Christian woman, who obviously believes in abiding by the beliefs stated in the bible, she should not be speaking about religion publicly at all, and definitely not be sharing her religious opinion. According to the bible, women are not to speak of religion publicly, or speak in church because that is the job of the men. If women have questions about religion they are meant to ask their husbands those questions at home, privately, and must accept the explanation they are given by their husband without argument because women should worship their husbands in the same way that their husbands worship "god". This is not what I believe, I am simply trying to explain that nothing Reverend Bruce says should be considered valid because her religious opinions can't be taken seriously considering the fact that if she understood the religion she was talking about, whatsoever, she wouldn't be talking at all.

as an atheist, I won't go as far as to say that we as a group are smarter than those who are religious. what I recognize is that both ideologies have a prevailing method of thinking that they tend to foster, and I think it is provably true that a rational, realistic, skeptical, discerning outlook, is preferable to the religious outlook. after all, as Robert Green Ingersoll once said; The hands that help are better far than lips that pray
