Absolutely. I thought he stole the show with that. Truth be told, I thought the intelligent minds on that program did a rather lackluster performance of advocating for humanism, but perhaps they simply weren't psychologically prepared for the strident nature of the opposition. Maajid was pretty good tho talking about insecurity. His secularism and humanism rings all the louder in today's still religious-majority world, due to the fact that he calls himself Muslim. Although, in just what sense he is a Muslim rather than a deist (which is basically a rookie atheist), I am still struggling to discern. Lol. :)

@milpog9 жыл бұрын
False equivalence time folks...... the fact that anyone can claim one religion as their own without fully subscribing to it's tenants is dangerously irrelevant. What matters is the average correlation, as represented by a statistic, between membership in any given religion and that person committing crimes sanctioned in said religion. If by 'but yet not believe', you are claiming that a Muslim or a Christian can call themself Muslim or Christian while not believing that God exists, you're technically correct. That person would, however, be an atheist by definition, and a lying, worthless excuse for a human. They be not be religious. They would be acting religious. Key difference. 'but they are all horseshit' ???? Sounds very much like you just concluded that comment with the intention of implying that Islam isn't significantly more dangerous than it's secularised sister religions, or that there might be some other religion that we need to focus on just as much. Or almost as much. I hope I'm wrong about that, because I'm very tired of double standards and moral blindness....

1:14 That guy's expression speaks for everyone listening. Also, I like how that guy keeps claiming that marriage comes from God and the Bible. Not only does marriage predate all religion, but I'm not sure that anyone would want Biblical marriage, considering that it is polygamous. Furthermore, there are all sorts of appalling marriage laws in the Bible. Adultery is punishable by death, and any woman who is not a virgin at her wedding must be stoned to death (Deuteronomy 22:20-22). Unmarried rape victims are considered damaged goods (because in the Bible, women are property), and so they must be sold to their rapist in marriage (Deut 22:28-29). However, married women who are raped must be stoned to death alongside their rapists (Deut 22:23-24). Are these laws that those people would like to see instituted? Finally, I can't help but notice that both of the people objecting to humanist rights appear to be of African descent, and one of them is a woman. Those are both groups that have known significant persecution, subjugation, and even slavery for much of recent history and beyond. So when that guy said "marriage is not for you", it is incredibly ironic considering that in centuries past, I could say right back to him, "freedom and equality are not for you."

Do you seriously have no understanding of history and the terrible things Christians did to *each other* (let alone to non-Christians)? Intra-religious intolerance and violence has featured in all of the world's major religions. Sure, these days people are a lot more free to share their opinions, even if these dissent from the standard doctrines of their churches. The point of what this Rabbi said is that it wasn't always so. And he's right. I don't know what you mean by 'you can be religious secular'. Secular means not religious, not bound by religious rules or related to religious matters. So I don't really know what you're trying to say there.

aiyakapteya yes excommunicated because they were minority views and were trying to divide the church and intra religious intolerance has not been all religions it has only been by some Christians to Jews more so between Christians and Muslims and secular doesn't mean not religious it just means that state doesn't support one religion over another and allows freedom of worship so I mean you can be supporter of secular but have your own personal religious belief

Douglas Murray was *_so_* dead-on accurate. Secularism and (the _ongoing_ struggle for)freedom and the scientific enlightenment is *_the best_* thing that ever happened to humanity. It's *_absurd_* to have to defend it against people who think saying or drawing certain things makes a revenge killing not only likely, but worth carrying out. That's *_backwards violent and insane_*. Yes, there are MANY aspects of modern society that are insane and violent too; but *_so is_* Islam. Islam is an idea; *_all_* ideas can, and in a free society, _should_ be openly *_and rigorously_* debated. Satire is a big part of that debate. It amazes me that people can't see how *_important_* that is.
@Neji.Hyuuga3 жыл бұрын
The scientific enlightenment was due to Muslims following Islam and this is a fact confirmed by many non-Muslim historians. The scientific method itself was invented by a Muslim( Hassan Ibn Haitham) so your babble has bi substance since Atheists have a very poor contribution to science.

Fluent Blasphemy Estonia. Its not the least religious country but i think there was a study that showed that we are the number one country where religion doesnt have play a big role in our daily lives. Even for people who identify as religious it isnt that significant part of their identity. And alot of religious people where are russian. And because many parents are either non-religious or those who are religious dont really care enough to feed that bullshit to their children, most young people are either atheist or are undecided because they havent researched the topic that much. All my friend are atheist. Even if some are religious or have other supernatural beliefs then they dont talk about these thong and it is their personal thing. I have encountered only two people who started talking to me about god and they where both from the US. I discovered the bullshit that goes with religion lately. All my life i lived in a buble because all the hardcore christians here are nice people who focus on good thing like pacifism and love and stuff. And though we seleprate christmas and easter atleast in my family we never talked about the religios side of it. They were just awsome traditions.
@MaggaraMarine9 жыл бұрын
Martin Kirbits I live in Finland and it's very similar here (I guess it applies to most European countries, especially Scandinavia). We don't have a lot of fundamentalists, and the church is pretty liberal. All Christians that I know don't make a big deal out of their Christianity. Actually, nobody cares if you are Christian or atheist or whatever. We really don't talk that much about religion. It is taught in school and we also learn about other religions (and there are different classes for members of different religions that all mainly focus on their own religion). At least our religion classes weren't that religious. I mean, they mostly focused on describing what happened in the stories in the Bible. We didn't pray or sing hymns or anything like that. We were just taught what the Christian religion is about, and later we also learned about other religions and their basic teachings. I think it would be interesting if the same religion classes were for everybody, and they would teach about different religions (and also people that don't have a religion), and there could be some discussion about some philosophical questions. People from different religious backgrounds would have different kind of views and it would make people understand each other a lot better. All Christians that I know are able to think rationally, and believe in science and evolution. They are normal people who just happen to believe in God. I have a very positive view of our church. But if it was anything like in America, my opinion would be pretty different. I think it's good to remember that fundamentalists don't really represent a religion. Fundamentalists are always a minority (but they are a very loud minority, because they disagree with pretty much everything). You shouldn't base your views of a religion on fundamentalists. I also found out about all the crazy religious stuff more recently (well, let's say five years ago, pretty much at the same time when I started questioning Christianity). I thought all Christians were like the ones I knew, but I was wrong.

@oRac001258 жыл бұрын
That black guy is upset for a very good reason. One of the most effective ways of being relevant that religion employs is equating itself with morality and good. That way you can conflate opposing religion with opposing everything that is good. However, humanism offers a way of justifying morals without sacred texts, thus devaluing them. All we have to do is to sit and watch as society matures and old fairy tales increasingly become treated as such.
@Teeb20234 жыл бұрын
As discussed near the end by Maajid Nawaz, it's the insecurity that emanates from the religious fundamentalists that shows their true agenda - they're shit scared that their fairytale nonsense is crumbling, and that society as a whole is getting utterly sick of their bigoted, divisive nonsense. Long may that decay continue. Humanity is now more than capable of survival without empty promises _allegedly_ made by invisible friends.
@indigopillow82603 жыл бұрын
What you said in the beginning about religion equating itself with morality and good and then opposing religion is everything that isn't good isn't that a false dichotomy? saying everything that goes against the bible is bad? I am not too sure if it is a false dichotomy but I recently learned about it and was wondering if that is the word for what you said. I completely agree with everything you stated.
@zorezakbar98923 жыл бұрын
I think your a bit hasty in saying humans will just mature and treating these stories that have roots going back over 10000 yrs as fairytails. neitchze went through the implications of what it meant for us to kill God and that there wouldn't be enough water to wash away the blood or something of the sort. 40yrs later what he predicted happened in Soviet Russia where 40million people ended up dead and a further 100million in Maoist China. It would prolly do you some good if you didn't believe the people that have been passing these stories throughout the years were just stupid for doing so and might have had a meaning in doing so. we believe we are smart and we can just disregard it as stupidity but there is a history about how these stories came about and how it relates to in human development its rather interesting and can be dissected from a non faith based view. John vervake has pretty good knowledge on the matter if your interested.

His second big mistake is calling the Bible a historical document. Identifying himself as a fundamentalist while Jesus was a radical socialist anarchist, the Malcolm X of his time and then some. At best the Bible is about an on-going revelation about a non-material existence. Obviously he doesn't understand the word history. Once again proving that religion is the herpes of irony. Weddings in modern times are COMPLETELY different from the biblical weddings. Biblical weddings were for family profits and trading. Today, they are about love and union. Modern marriage is not necessarily religious so the idea that a theist can't understand it simply means they are ignorant of the bible teachings they cling to.
