Like people putting the time to rate, and talk about your book is a compliment in itself. They actually took time to critique, and point out things they like. If they really had no feelings about it, they wouldn’t even take time to talk about. Reviews can take some time to write, and people take pride in making those reviews. I’m sure the reviewer might not even want to recommend the book anymore.

I'm in grad school for Library Science and my Reader's Advisory class just talked about how authors devalue "casual" reviewers on BookTok and Goodreads because they don't see them as educated or cultured as professional critics who review books for journals like The New Yorker. One of the authors in the paper we read even said that they think Goodreads reviewers are "just a bunch of Moms." So much classism and ignorance :/ It's so frustrating.
@Sammathnar3 жыл бұрын
A lot of Goodreads reviews are badly written and lacking in substance though. No discussion of why the reviewer disliked the book, often just a blanket dismissal of for the main character because "they were annoying", or a one sentence "the plot was boring". Those are not helpful reviews for anyone. If you want to be taken seriously as a reviewer, you should put more than 10 minutes into the review process. As has been said, you are reviewing art not rating an Uber ride.
@kates1x3 жыл бұрын
@@Sammathnar I agree that a lot of goodreads reviews aren't helpful, but I don't think that means casual reviewers on platforms like Goodreads, KZbin, and Instagram should be dismissed and mocked. Just because they aren't putting a lot of effort into a review (not everyone has the time for that), their opinions are still valid. The author mentioned in this video is implying that anyone who liked their book and didn't rate it 5 stars isn't reviewing books correctly, as if these same people aren't the ones who are supporting and buying her books (not to mention liking it).

Idk about everyone else but for me a 4.5 review means that that book is as close to a perfect book as any work of art can be. However, 5 star means that not only was the book close to perfect but the book also spoke to something in me (if y'all know what I mean). This means that whether I give a book a 4.5 or a 5 star review is subjective based on my life experiences. This doesn't mean 4.5 book is better than a 5 star book, because as I said that extra .5 is subjective and based on what appeals to me as an individual. Also how is an established author gonna bitch this much over an extra .5 star.

As an author myself, here's some advice for those who want to get published: don't do it unless you know you can handle people who don't love your work as much as you do. You pour your heart and soul into your book, and that can make less-than-perfect reviews feel personal. They aren't. They don't even mean your book is bad. Write for the people who love you and be decent to the ones who don't. Focus on using your words to contribute something good to the world instead of tearing people down.

I'm not published yet (still querying), but I finally started letting my friends and family read my first book and it's a great test run of whether or not you can handle criticism. I'm now pretty sure that if I was able to handle my own grandmother secretly giving her copy back to my mom because she didn't want to finish it, I should be able to handle a negative review from a stranger lol.

@@raven_moonshine39 I agree completely! My best friend in the world had a lot of constructive criticism for my book. On the meh uncomfortable side: I had a lot of work to do. Same, like, 4 stars means that I would probably still recommend your book to other people and that I enjoyed it. 5 stars means it's one of the best books I've read this year (so obviously I don't give that to just any book), 4 stars means it's a good book and I had a good time with it, 3 stars means "heh, it was okay", 2 stars is "there was an attempt made here" or stuff I didn't finish because I was too bored reading it, and 1 star is "WTF DID I JUST READ". So in my rating, even 3 stars is fine because while it wasn't something I LURVED, I'm sure there are other people out there who will love more than I did because it's still overall pretty good. And look, I'm expecting to get one star reviews if I ever publish something. It might not even be because my book is bad, but it might just be because it wasn't someone's cup of tea or there are tropes or topics that person happens to really hate. lauren, girlie. if even books that are worldwide bestsellers like the Harry Potter series get 1 star reviews (127,650 on Goodreads) OF COURSE your debut novel will have some. no need to make such a big deal out of it. it's just the way the world works.

And she wasn't even mad about the 1 star reviews? She was mad about a 4.5 review? What the actual fuck? The people she insulted were praising her book and took the time to read it and write a really positive review and this absolute Karen of an author called them out for not giving her 5 stars that she felt entitled to. I'm speechless

Officially on goodreads 5 stars is you “loved it”and 4 stars is you “really liked it” and honestly even a 1 star is supposed to mean “not for me” so unless you put in your review that you hated it and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone/basically trash it, then any review is a positive review bc it means someone read your book and cared enough to talk about it/ share a rating

I don't understand why authors get so mad at book reviewers when they bring more readers & traction to their books. Like even if they don't like the book, someone might disagree with the reviewer and pick up the book. There are booktubers I watch where I know we have different reading interests, so if they don't like a book I might want to pick it up even more.

I don't think many authors understand how reading works, let alone reviews. I've been thinking for a while now that half of the shit that goes down on social media wouldn't be a thing if writers were readers first. I'm both and honest to God, not even 1-star reviews of my works leave me this worked up. And I really hope Debbie and Hannah catch wind of this and go back on their decision of rating that book so high.
@froggyringu3 жыл бұрын
Wait what? Which authors weren’t readers first? ...you can’t really write a book if you haven’t read one first.
@lua_ferraz3 жыл бұрын
@@froggyringu Absolutely, but I don't mean reading in the broader sense, I mean specifically reading as a hobby/for pleasure. I think that amongst authors, reading is often treated as a commodity, or strictly as research. Although I'm not against it, I think this practice has a side effect and it's that you stop reading what you want/like and stop reading critically, and I think that's where the disconnect with reviewers happens.
@idek74383 жыл бұрын
Hannah even said in the replies that she was sad people wouldn't read this book now because she genuinely liked it. Also like, she was sent the book as an ARC to give an HONEST review and said so in the review itself. What did Hough expect? If she is so thin-skinned she can't handle a 4-star review that says so many nice things about her book she's in the wrong profession. A writer needs to be able to accept even harsher criticism, learn from it and move on. You can't rant on Twitter and call people names every time someone doesn't give you 5 stars on Goodreads.
@lua_ferraz3 жыл бұрын
@@idek7438 Completely agree! What baffles me is that one of the first advices you find regarding being an author is how to deal with criticism. It's such a widespread notion that this type of behavior is really unexplainable.
@froggyringu3 жыл бұрын
@@lua_ferraz I think she's just an entitled person. I know many authors who are readers as well. I think it's a bit rude to say that it's authors as a group that's doing this and not a few rotten people. If a person is reading for research they are obviously reading it critically...it's when you are reading what you want/like that you're not reading critically because you have your rose-colored glasses on and am only going with your feels. ...I mean, I was expected to read critically when I took literature classes. When I read for fun I'll just dnf a book and return it if I don't enjoy it.

Why is always the privileged no-name white authors crying over reviews that aren’t even negative? Meanwhile, I saw a one-star review of a historical romance by a desi author where the reviewer completely missed the point, calling it a Regency and criticizing it for anachronisms (it was set in the late Victorian era), and the author completely ignored it? I only know this since the author actually liked my review on GR, which was a 3-star, as there were some legitimate issues with the story. Kinda awkward, but I applaud her for not engaging much beyond that, even where it’s warranted.
