If people want to start running MDFCs and almost zero basics, that's fine. If that is the case, they need to not complain about effects like Ruination, Blood Moon, and Magus of the Moon to punish that choice.

The green 2 cost mana dork is really good though, If you have it in your hand but no 1 drop, put it in tapped. And later it's an decent mana ramper. It does what no other mana dork can do, make your heavy creater midrange low-ish land deck more consistent.

+1 for the replacement cards! I've done this method so I can run a deck of each color combination. I can't afford 12 copies of Cyclonic Rift, but I can afford 1 copy and 12 tokens. What I've personally done is use blank playing cards. All my playgroups are OK with it, but if anyone ever complained I could just swap all the proxies with the real card before I shuffle up. Each blank card I wrote the card, CMC, type and subtype, effect, and right in the middle which deck its from. Then if I leave in a hurry and I can easily know where the real cards are at. This has been a 100% game changer, and I've turned a bunch of other players onto this method. Our games have gotten more powerful, more balanced, and I'm able to have a deck for (almost) every color and archetypes. It gives me more flexibility and ability to explore new options easier.

Agreed but I think that’s even low. I’d say min 50% of land base should be basic
@justwrath2049
@justwrath2049 4 жыл бұрын
I'd say 8 is a pretty good baseline, but it's very metagame-dependant : because my playgroups are light on nonbasic land hate, many of my 3+ color decks play fewer than 8, and I've always felt that was the right call, especially since my fetches can get the basics that I do have in my deck if I feel that's necessary. That way I don't miss out on optimal fixing and functionality. Now, if nonbasic land hate is prevalent in your playgroup, by all means, raise the number. I know I should think of adding more when I try new playgroups, in case I could get punished by Blood Moon, Ruination or the like. My mana fixing is probably "too good for no reason" in most of my decks, and I could do without the drawbacks of some of my lower-tier duals like painlands.
@justwrath2049
@justwrath2049 4 жыл бұрын
@@matthewbrown336 You do you, but 50% is an exaggeration to me, even in groups with a lot of nonbasic land hate. In a two-color deck, that works, but in 3+ colors, unless you're base green and running a lot of green basic-fetching effets, or your spells really aren't color-intensive, you will have color problems.
@Hitzel
@Hitzel 4 жыл бұрын
My opinion on modal lands is that we have already had utility lands that tap for a color, tapped or untapped, for a long time and they haven't become dominant staples even though they "should have" on paper. The tapped modal lands compete with utility lands that come in tapped, the mythic ones compete with utility lands that come in untapped, and the pathways compete for existing mana bases. I suspect that most currently maintained decks will run 1 or 2 of these, one replacing one of those utility lands and one replacing a spell. In my casual Gallia list for example, I replaced my Khalni Garden for a Bala Ged Recovery and that feels great, but I haven't felt the need to add another. I also replaced a mountain with a Valakut Awakening in my competitive Neheb deck. That's it. I have also made 2 battlecruiser level casual decks using a lot of these modal lands, and I'm. gonna be honest too many of them feels really bad. The spells are just not that powerful and the tapped lands often can't be played, so I honestly think that natural selection will cause very few of these to be run in most decks, but choosing to run zero will only be the case when alternatives are being run.
@arthurvandenbergh1881
@arthurvandenbergh1881 4 жыл бұрын
The only ones I really like are the mythics anyways because all the other ones are just bad spells and bad lands. The mythics are sweet because the 3 life hardly matters and topdecking a 7 CMC spell instead of a land in some games can come in clutch. I think all the mythics apart from the blue one are justifiable in any deck that has one of the colors, unless it’s some 5 color deck that really needs a very expensive manabase. Edit: there are some good rare and uncommon ones too, but only if they synergize with your deck. The mythics are the only ones that could be put up as auto includes imo
@theotherguy4478
@theotherguy4478 4 жыл бұрын
@@arthurvandenbergh1881 an auto include in most, if not all, of my black decks is Malakir Rebirth. Most times I’ll be casting for the spell, but if I don’t need it, then I can use the land side. The way my play group found to make the DFML cards easier to use is, we put the spell side face up in the sleeve, but if we're going to use it as a land, then we just put the spell in the lands area. We just ask that they look it up ahead of time if it comes in tapped, or can pay life, ect. In the case of the two land sides, we'll have them "pair" it next to a land of the same color, or use a piece or scrap paper and slide it in. If they have colored dice, we allow that as well to be placed on top. It's not a perfect system, but it's been functional so far!

For me, I have always ran a few lands lower then the standard (what I call standard of when you buy a deck from Walmart, 24 for a 60 card, 37 for a commander), like 22/23 for a 60 card, and 33/34 for a commander, but always ran 40%+ being basic, because they're are always a way to sqeeze in room for mana ramps like Command Tower, or Sol Ring. And then there are MANY different ways to search for lands like, Nature's Lore, Cultivate just to name a couple and if your not into green (which I mostly am), you can run a majorly nice card called Sword of the Animist. If your running heavy on a single or two color deck, throw in Nyx Lotus. Or like my table top Elf deck, where I only have 12 lands in a 60 card deck.

Personally, I don't even run tap lands in two color decks. I only use basics and some utility lands because the color requirements aren't too high, basics make your game play smoother and they're pretty much free. For me to consider running an MDFC, the spell side would have to be good enough on its own and then the ability to use it as a land would basically just be a corner case cherry on top for me.

Those new tokens designed for MDFC's are actually a god send if you like to have tokens of all your creatable token creatures from your other effects. They make for amazing blank template with a lot of space for however you wish to illustrate them! I'll be using mine to make my Rin and Seri tokens that Wizards never released! Also they could be used for creating your own custom commanders, if your playgroup allows it! I'm currently tinkering with balancing a custom commander that turns Mill effects you play into Fateseal.

As a mostly Mono Red player, I can say basic lands in commander still are important. That being said, I haven't had an excuse in any recent mono red build to not run a certain 4 of these things. A few lands that come in tapped is okay, and if you topdeck them later and can instead burn two creatures, fling a creature, borrow a creature, or cycle some of your hand away. Same reason I usually found room for some colorless utility lands. That being said, running untapped colored lands is still very important.

So if they added the land sub type on the side, it would have been super nice. But there's so much basic land color manipulation in the game, its just whether you want to add it in your library or not, color consistency can only come from what artifacts and whatever mana "modifiers you add". So cards like chromatic lantern, joiner adept, urborg and whatnot that modify your mana is a decision to make your deck consistent. But you can search for the basics with Kodamas reach and Cultivate, Farseek, rampant growth and whatnot so it makes you benefit in having basic lands at the cost of spells. So theres a cost basis analysis in each card you put in the deck. If your running more basics, then you need to get the basic land ramp, if not your having more spells at the cost of ramp* (arguably).

Both versions of my decks for Omnath (GUR, paper) and Omnath (RGWU, online) run a number of basic lands because the majority of my land search searches for basic lands. For non-land centric decks, I still want to use some basics because many LD and MLD cards now cover only non-basic lands. It's insurance. Now, I could see where these lands are nice (I don't like the land on both sides cycle though), but honestly if the spell side isn't working in the deck, then it's no good in the deck. The only one I think would go in every deck that has Green is Bala Ged Recovery, though not over something like Eternal Witness necessarily. I'm not even sure I like the Mythic ones for any deck that has those colors, though the Black one may be the exception here. EDIT for grammar and: My paper GUR Omnath deck use 13-15 tokens created by individual cards already. I don't have much more room for those placeholder cards in my deck box XD

I think the MDFCs are being extremely overrated in everything but Standard. I like that they’ve made Oops! All Spells viable in other formats but the idea that you can just jam them into any deck in place of basics is dumb. Most of the spell portions of the cards are overcosted garbage and a mono-color land coming in tapped is usually bad unless it has an actual usable effect like Bojuka Bog.
@Nergal123
@Nergal123 4 жыл бұрын
The tempo loss is too severe in many cases. Coming into play untapped is the difference between Duals/Shocks and mere guildgates. Only in 4-5 color do I play a decent amount of tapped lands due to budget constraints, but in two color I tend to avoid it as much as I can. The Mythic MDFC’s can be usable, but not an instant include, unless your deck is synergistic with the spell side basics or other options are better. I find that the non mythics have more usable spell sides, but are still highly conditional due to the land side coming into play tapped.

@@ceulgai2817 Those are better in more cases in my opinion, and I still don’t use them at all other than in mono color, very infrequently in two color. They are good with cards like Ramunap excavator, Crucible of Worlds, World Shaper and the like. Not to mention card draw payoff cards like Niv-Mizzet, cycling payoffs like Astral Drift, and discard payoffs like Bone miser. On top of that they draw you a card, which yes could be a dud, but aside from only a couple of the MDFC’s will be more consistent in getting what you actually need at that stage of the game. So as I said previously, unless your deck specifically has synergy with the MDFC’s there are likely better options. Moreso if you have a larger budget, but with all the great budget options nowadays even I can build a consistent 4 color land base on practically nothing. Edit: Also I’m not saying they are bad, a couple of them are really good. One a bit too much that its outside of budget range sadly, but they are definitely not auto include.

Another cost saving measure is going to wish.com and searching proxies. A full set of original dual lands and fetches should run you like 10 bucks. They'll take like a month to arrive, but when they do you've got yourself a nice 5 color mana base along with 2 of each basic, a command tower, exotic orchard is pretty cheap, and maybe a couple of the cheap fetches like evolving wilds and terramorphic expanse.

In my Land's Wrath deck, I still play a bunch of basic lands to be able to trigger Landfall skills more easily. Tho the double sided cards have potential if Wizard continues to make different types. So far Bala Ged Recovery and Ondu Inversion are great entries for the deck, the creatures are all okay, but nice to have in case I need one or the other. So nah, I think basic lands are fine the way they are, safe bets for any deck and serves their purpose one way or another.

I run no less than 10 basic lands for any deck, including my 5-color decks. Case in point: Blood Moon, Ruination, Primal Order, Price of Progress, Back to Basics, and for the person who runs no basics in their deck: From the Ashes. I've personally played around a Blood Moon in 5-colors several times though with the likes of Chromatic Lantern, or the use of heavy red cards (Kiki Jiki + Tyrant of Discord), and yes, I'm aware that triple red in a 5-color deck doesn't make sense, but that deck doesn't make sense to begin with. (When asked, What's your win condition, I answer: "Yes".)

personally I really like the duel sided duels in 2-3 color decks I am also a big fan of the mythics specifically the black red and green ones. the white is okay but a bit specific. I think the blue is okay in decks that are drawing a ton anyway but is pretty bad in most decks since its way to much win moreish. in the rare slot i think the red one is almost an auto include it being 3 mana to cast and only having one pip and effectivly cycling all the useless cards in your hand., white and black are very worth it as a 8 mana board wipe while not ideal can be great in the late game and a removal spell on a land is a okay with me the big risk being the double pip. the blue rare is more specific on if you have some creature worth copying and the green one is the most questionable just being a big body. in the uncommon slot i really only like the black uncommon that can save your creature since it can be usefull to save your commander and retrigger etbs.

People should run more basics tbh, to many upsides. Now, my opinion if these new MDFC lands taking a land slot is VERY dependent on you deck, for example if youre running a mono green/blue/black deck or most 2 colored decks, you can slot these in as utility lands, if youre mono red/white or boros, or youre a 4-5 color deck, its probably wiser to have them take a spell slot and treat those cards more like mana fixing.
