Man, I am glad to see people testing new stuff and pushing the norms. I caught a big black drum when I was in the bay last time and was told to throw him back. They aren’t any good to eat. Shit…. That looked pretty good to me. I’m keeping the next one.

I can tell you those size black drum are really good. I have only kept one that was 39 inches and around 60lbs. It no longer has that flakey texture. It was more like a really tender pork chop. No worms in it either and was caught in Indian River Lagoon. I have kept several in the 24 to 32 inch range and they were delicious and still had those big flakes.

Good Morning Tug Well I went with the old stories myself. black drum has worms !! Boy look at what I miss out on. The meat look thick and nice white. well that tells you don't believe what you hear. The Drum look about 28" to 32" is that about right Tug ! Maybe the smaller Drum don't get worms till they are big. I've always let them go. Now you got me going ! next one I caught I'll take it home. Thanks for tips this week. I work with a project with Gitmo. You said your down there soon. It's getting Bigger and Full. 😉😉 That's all am saying on Here. 😉. Black Drum are delicious, but I've always heard the big ones get worms, doesn't look like the case here. Perhaps the odds are greater they will have worms as the get bigger. I caught one around that size on the East mouth of the Haulover Canal in the Mosquito Lagoon after getting skunked on Reds and pretty much anything else the whole trip. Since our fishing trips include at least one self caught dinner with Blackeye Peas and Cheese Grits, I kept it and filleted it out. First time for me. I blackened it in HOT cast iron and my wife Judy and I now prefer Black Drum over Redfish although only slightly. We enjoy your videos. You all ever fish Pellicer Creek? We live 150 miles South but we fish Tomoka a few times a year and I see Pellicer on my charts and it makes me wonder if it might be worth checking out. Keep on keeping on. Cheers Bud.

That looked very good. I believe the end quality has a lot to do with handling the fish long before it gets to the table. The size of the fish, how long before it gets cleaned, was it transported on ice. I’ve also found that I think it’s better to let the cleaned fish rest for 12 hours before table preparation. Do some testing and You might find some fish are better after letting them rest, clean, dry, covered, refrigerated. That drum looked perfect, so a lot had to do with the way it was handled ! Good vid.

Proclaiming all White Drum wormy is like back when no one would eat Sheepshead. Now everyone eats em. it's just due to the times and people who've not eaten fish, or someone saw a worm. When I commercial fished 45 years ago our rule of thumb was 10 pounds and under no need to worry about worms. I've also eaten bigger and they were wormy but you can get them out.

@@TugTrashOutdoors a lot of fish have worms. People just don't realize. I had a shipment of fresh Cod filets laying out on sheet pans ten minutes later you could see little red wiggly worms working their way out of the meat.😂

What about fresh water drum? Are you familiar with them? I've heard that they are nasty. But then a lot of people say the same thing about mullet but I live them! Fried, smoked or as a dip! JS

@@TugTrashOutdoors We grew up about 17 miles South of Augusta, GA and my parents preferred the mountains to the beach for vacations so I was not around the coast much. But about once a month they would go to the fish market and get mullet, so unless we went to a creek or pond, which wasn't too often, then our fish consisted of fried mullet. I told my brother and sister yesterday that we need to have a friend mullet party. Oh, and we never filleted our fish. Not even mullet. How do you season your smoked mullet? They first I had was at an inland restaurant and it was delicious. Seasoned with equal parts black pepper and seasoned salt. Delicious! I'll be looking forward to your mullet video.

I have eaten Drum all my life, the only thing Tug is I pay close attention to everything I buy as far as the ingredients in those products especially HFCS's, MSG ect.... I Never use Microwaves to cook anything, Micro destroys all nutrition in food, also changes the molecular structure in water, you might do better eating cardboard.

I've never caught a black drum but I've watched a lot of videos and you didn't put any rumor to rest. Many black drum around that size and of course bigger have worms. Much like Amberjack the bigger they are the longer they've had time to accumulate parasites. That being said the worms don't interact with the human body at all and entirely safe to eat even raw. Pull them out, cut them out, or just eat them. Just promotes the slot limit more in my mind, toss the small back to grow bigger, toss the big back because they're breeder and loaded with worms(a lot of the time, but not all), keep some of the medium size.

I have caught many Black Drum on the central east coat of Florida. Lots in the 24 to 32 inch range even more in the 15 to 24 inch range and 1 we kept that was 39 inches and around 55 to 60 lbs. Only had 1 with worms and it was a 17 inch. I am very familiar with black drum fishing. Now I will say the 39 incher was more of a very tender pork texture and not a flakey fish texture.
