Man, I am glad to see people testing new stuff and pushing the norms. I caught a big black drum when I was in the bay last time and was told to throw him back. They aren’t any good to eat. Shit…. That looked pretty good to me. I’m keeping the next one.

I can tell you those size black drum are really good. I have only kept one that was 39 inches and around 60lbs. It no longer has that flakey texture. It was more like a really tender pork chop. No worms in it either and was caught in Indian River Lagoon. I have kept several in the 24 to 32 inch range and they were delicious and still had those big flakes.

I caught one around that size on the East mouth of the Haulover Canal in the Mosquito Lagoon after getting skunked on Reds and pretty much anything else the whole trip. Since our fishing trips include at least one self caught dinner with Blackeye Peas and Cheese Grits, I kept it and filleted it out. First time for me. I blackened it in HOT cast iron and my wife Judy and I now prefer Black Drum over Redfish although only slightly. We enjoy your videos. You all ever fish Pellicer Creek? We live 150 miles South but we fish Tomoka a few times a year and I see Pellicer on my charts and it makes me wonder if it might be worth checking out. Keep on keeping on. Cheers Bud.

That looked very good. I believe the end quality has a lot to do with handling the fish long before it gets to the table. The size of the fish, how long before it gets cleaned, was it transported on ice. I’ve also found that I think it’s better to let the cleaned fish rest for 12 hours before table preparation. Do some testing and You might find some fish are better after letting them rest, clean, dry, covered, refrigerated. That drum looked perfect, so a lot had to do with the way it was handled ! Good vid.

I've never caught a black drum but I've watched a lot of videos and you didn't put any rumor to rest. Many black drum around that size and of course bigger have worms. Much like Amberjack the bigger they are the longer they've had time to accumulate parasites. That being said the worms don't interact with the human body at all and entirely safe to eat even raw. Pull them out, cut them out, or just eat them. Just promotes the slot limit more in my mind, toss the small back to grow bigger, toss the big back because they're breeder and loaded with worms(a lot of the time, but not all), keep some of the medium size.
@rslack78 Жыл бұрын
I have caught many Black Drum on the central east coat of Florida. Lots in the 24 to 32 inch range even more in the 15 to 24 inch range and 1 we kept that was 39 inches and around 55 to 60 lbs. Only had 1 with worms and it was a 17 inch. I am very familiar with black drum fishing. Now I will say the 39 incher was more of a very tender pork texture and not a flakey fish texture.
