I love that you gave a review. To hear you talk about the annoyances of the noise around you and the headphone volume too much/not enough. I dont think other reviews give an honest review in this manner. I dont have a hard time hearing but i dislike the annoyances that come with headphones ie: sweat in ear and the buds falling out, having to keep pulling my ear to push it back in UGGA, not loud enough when driving, JUST NOT LOUD ENOUGH......etc All I care about with a head phone is: ease of wearing and volume when in loud noisy areas. Apparetly I find myself in loud surroundings often when I need blue tooth calling. Thank you for your review

I've been using the SHOKZ OpenRun Pro after Laurens Ten Dam recommended them and I have to admit it's a game changer for me! It's been fantastic for long slow rides to keep me entertained.

Also using the Shokz for a while for cycling, it's not perfect but really good at slow speeds as you said. I do press pause on descents as well. Battery life is outstanding.

Good review. I'm sticking to Shokz. BTW: I was torn about whether to get my son a set of OpenRuns or OpenRunPros for Christmas. It came down to the following: The Pros have an extra 2 hours or so of battery (10 hours total) and you can set them up via a phone app. The downside is they are less waterproof -- only IP55. The regular OpenRuns are IP67, and provide a real 8 hours of playing time. My son cares less about IP ratings, likes apps and is on his phone all day, so I got him the Pros. I cycle a lot in all weathers so I'll stick to the regular OpenRuns. Cheaper to buy and more waterproof. Cheers

Such an awesome review and comparison !!! I'm a cyclist and have also had limited success with in-canal headphones. Given how we like stuff to fit a certain way, ie helmet and sunglasses, do the headphones interfere with the sunglasses on your ears ? Also, can you approximate the riding speed at the point where the wind noise becomes too much ? I love to cruise @ 20 mph in an aero position and when my position is right, I hear very little wind noise, so maybe the headphones would be more distracting? That said, I would love to play some death metal on hard interval sets. I suppose since the headphones are so flexible and durable, I could take them off at any time during the ride.

They don’t interfere. If you don’t like the wind noise just pause it and continue when the wind is less. For music it’s not that big issue as for podcasts. Speed… I’d say 35-40km/h it’s windy

Pretty much almost half of road cyclists and runners in my city wears bone conduction headphones. I borrowed two from my friends for running and cycling, Shokz OpenRun and OpenRun Pro. Compared to standard earphone (my AirPods Pro 2 and Bose Soundsport Wireless), the bass response from the bone conduction headphone is lacking. But when I’m running or cycling, sound quality is not a priority. As long as I can hear the songs, it’s alright. This is true for running because of my slower pace. But for cycling at higher speed, just like you said, the sound from headphone is “fighting” with the wind noise going past through my ears and I have to pump the volume to the max. It’s okay for the OpenRun, but for the OpenRun Pro, when I set to the max volume, the vibration of the headphone (because of the claimed better bass response) becomes annoying. So yeah, it is way safer to ride the bike with these bone conduction headphones because you become aware of the outside world, but expect to have compromise in sound quality.

Thanks for the review! Shockz are on offer at Futurumshop at the moment, so I was considering buying some. But I think the wind noise is really going to annoy me. So I'll stick with my bluetooth ear-buds. With al the quit electric vehicles these, days you better rely on vision anyway and it also filters out the constant death threats that you get on a bike ;)

I have had a pair shokz titanium since 2017, they are a little heavier than current models and they use MicroUSB for charging but they are still working fine. I ride mostly trails, when in traffic, I don't listen to anything.

This experience lines up exactly with my experience with Shokz. Impossible to hear with wind or speed or busy streets. Still going to continue using mine. I literally pause them like Jasper haha. Didn’t mention it. It’s about 8 hours for the Haylou and shokz. They charge in 15 minutes to a 2 hour battery life and in 2 hours to 100%. I was impressed by it. More info on battery life is available on the products websites of course

I have the head shox and they play music for rides over 5 hours. Never break down due to sweat either. AirPods only good for 3 hrs and wear out due to sweat after 1 yr

Hi Jasper, Great video. I have a question about the mic on the bone conduction. Do you have experience with making phone calls on the bike. Does the person you are calling experience the wind noise with bone conduction headphones? As I ride a speedpadelec I tend to ride 45 km/h so there is quite some wind noise. Do the headphones you have tested have traditional mics or is the mic a bone conduction type?

Mic is normal mic and will have wind noise when calling. How often do you call wile riding your speed pedelec? Calling in non riding conditions works great and I Use it all the time for that purpose

Looks really good, especially because In-Ears with cable at the back seem to die out. Did any model stand out in terms of battery run time? When you don‘t want to use them any more, can you make them small enough to fit in your back pockets?

Yes they fit your back pocket. (On the ride in Valencia I had 1 in my back pocket yhe whole time. I didn’t test exact battery times…

I am using Wissonly Hi Runner, and in fact, it works very well. I think Jasper underestimated Hi Runner and may not have experienced it in depth. Its functions are very powerful and can be used in multiple scenarios, such as running, cycling, swimming, etc. Moreover, the price is also very nice

Thanks for the review. I’m cycling to work daily within the city… not very fast… takes me an almost hour for 13 km… but I do have the problem with wind… do you use any wind blocking stuff on the helmet? Like windblox or something? What do you think about those?

No I don’t use them because I think they look ridiculous…. But they probably work yes. The bone conduction in combination with those wind blockers would probably work perfect!

What about the length of each headband? Which one is the longest? I've tried 2 cheap pairs from Amazon that were too short. That caused the conductors to sit at an odd angle or. Ot in the right spot for optimal performance.

Fun fact, the bone conduction headphone thing has been around for at least 15 years. I know this because I used to do triathlons and they were marketed as something you listen to while doing your swim training. And even back then, they didn't work half bad. So it was really no surprise to me at 7:00 where Jasper says you can use them in the shower. I think that's basically where they originated.

I use them with my Varia radar, I'm a bit deaf so cannot hear the bleeps! It lets me hear cars being registered and after they p[ass and then give me the all-clear. Works brilliantly as long as the volume is turned up high.

Mmmm I think it will be an issue. Maybe if you have good wind deflectors (it’s a product you clip onto your helmet strap to prevent the windhoos) it would work.

Get some of those cheap foam ear plugs they sell for DIY. They make a huge difference when it's windy. I keep a couple in my bike's top tube bag as a "just in case" option. But I rarely have to use them Cheers

I use shokz but concur that it is hard to hear with lots on outside noise and you can't turn them up enough. They are almost useless for indoor riding with fans so I use airpods with noise cancelling.

heck yeah! having my ears open for sirens, horns, and car engine lets me know if I need to give space for cars to pass. that being said, I'm going to hate it when everything becomes electric and silent.

Ive had 4 pairs of aftershockz , 2 pairs of wired headphones and 2 pairs of bluetooth wireless and they have all been pretty much bombproof. My bluetooth ones have about 5 years of use on them and charge via microusb. I'm not a fan of proprietary cables even if I like the magnetic cables since I use similar break away cables for the phone. Only function issue was my model had some problems with the outer coating which came off after 6 months of daily use and storage in my car (didn't affect function in wet weather). My only other major gripe with shockz is how they have started cheaping out with their storage systems. My wired sets came with very nice hard cases, the Bluetooth pair came with a soft zipper pouch (which is functional even if it doesn't have protection) and now it just looks like a cheap storage bag. #lame for what you're paying for IMO.

Same for me. I love my OpenRuns, but the coating on the transducers came off. The dealer gave me a new set as a warranty replacement, no questions asked, but the coating fell off them also. It hasn't affected the sound or the waterproofing as far as I can tell though.

I am at my second shokz device having failed both of them after 15 months. Would not recommend the product until they have resolved there reliability issue. I love the bone conduction though. Has anyone tested the H2O tri?

these shox headphones make me nauseous. they vibrate the bone to directly transmit sound to the cochlea, but because that's attached to the semicircular canals that affect balance, they can mess with your equilibrium. and they don't block the wind noise so you can't use them for any real cycling anyway

That doesn't sound convincing for windy conditions. And when cycling with a little wind, there is always a lot of wind noise in your ears. I used to wear these street style (named by Sony) headphones. Those were small on ear headphones, with a neckband too. The pro was: they covered your ears, so the wind wouldn't get to your ears, but they didn't close your ears off from the world. They actually got the wind out of your ears and let music in instead. And because they had a neckband, they were perfect to combine with a helmet and sunglasses or normal glasses. If you want to know what I mean: it's the MDR-G series. But they have been discontinued for quite some time now. Not sure whether there was ever a version with bluetooth. Most of them were wired. They should bring out something like that for cyclists now.

Of course there is wind noise. Your ears are open! Put ear plugs in your ear and see if you can still hear the wind noise, but it defeats the purpose of this device, no?

How well do the LinkBuds work for allowing in outside sounds? I know Shokz have a purpose and a compromise with sound quality. However the sound quality is so terrible, that it annoys and distracts me. I have Sennheiser Momentum 3 TWS buds which sound amazing but are bad for cycling as the transparency mode amplifies wind. I have not found a solution I am happy with.

@@jasperverkuijl they are TWS launched by SONY middle of 2022. They have a donut design which allow noise from surrounding to reach inside our ear. Sound quality is very good

the reason is because you might want to chat to someone while cycling. one doesnt always push ones heart while cycling. some people commute on it. or do it for fun. earbuds that work in the wind enble that usecase. wired ones work. freebuds pro 3 apparently is good enough. @@jasperverkuijl

I'm surprised how unpopulair smooth neckband headphones are with cyclist. To me it's the superior design. -A smooth shell acualy reduces wind noise, I keep mine on even if not in mood for entertainment. -they combine great with a helmnet -better sound then all other options, unless you don't mind full studio headphones. -if you get one with a cable they're light (more comfort) When senheiser announced the end of production for the pmx60 I bought 2 spares, now I regret not buying 10.

Cyclist here. Used to ride 200-250 miles per week. I don't agree listening to music while riding; your ears are your primary protection against cars. Your helmet mirror is second, but your ears are always "ON."

u were bought and hyped the sponsored product. also do call tests with the phone you call in a quiet environment. tehn record video with a second camera. and switch between the camera sound and the recording of the phone at home. @@jasperverkuijl
