Allow me to add a 5th reason: safety. I was looking for earbuds that would stay in my ears after wasting money on expensive ones that hurt and popped out. Bone conduction headphones were what the folks at my local running store suggested, and after using them for a week I see why. I can listen to my music same as ever, they stay put no matter how much I sweat, and I can also hear other runners, bikes, cars, and animals coming from behind. I am sold! Thank you for explaining how this technology works.

I have nerve damage in one of my ears from a skull fracture ( wear your helmets when skateboarding kids!) Its left me with like 30% hearing in that one ear, I can hear but can't make out what is being said or where sound is coming from. Will these improve my hearing or will it just be a bunch of noise?

If you want the Bass experience - put the earplugs on. This simulates the noise cancellation of the typical earbuds but it negates the whole purpose of hearing what is happening around you which is annoying for me as a cyclist and is ultimately UNSAFE. I just bought a pair of Openmove by Aftershokz today and took it on a bike ride and absolutely loved it. No ear stress, fits perfectly in my helmet with sunglasses. I can listen to music and make calls and hear my Varia warn me of incoming vehicles from behind. Thumbs up totally !

Another advantage of bone conduction hearing devices is that they do not cover the ear (you already mentioned that part) but what you didn't mention is that it actually complies with traffic laws, for example, in Denmark you're not allowed to cycle with earphones on as it causes accidents when you can't quite hear the traffic around you. but with bone conduction, that's not a problem at all cause you're not covering the ear.

One of my pros: doesn't increase the heat in your ears as with the traditional closed-back headphones. I've experienced rapid ear wax buildup and I've heard that covered ears yield faster microbial growth. Another pro Is that when I'm working with these on, I don't have to take them off to turn around and acknowledge another person or their conversation.

Really glad to hear this review from an audiologist! It is encouraging to hear that these are safe from a health standpoint. I am considering these for running--as a female I don't like to run without an awareness of my environment, but my runs are getting awfully boring. I have TMJ issues, so one of my concerns was the potential for the vibration to agitate my jaw. I think I will have to try them out for myself, but it was encouraging to hear that when you were working out you didn't seem to notice the vibration. Thanks for the video!

I just found your channel today and subscribed! I lost my hearing on my left ear about six years back due to an inner ear virus, I have about 10% of my hearing capacity remaining. I saw an article earlier today for the aftershokz titanium, which I read up on and some reviews. After work I ran to a pharmacy that had a demo and I could not believe it but they worked. I could care less about the overall sound quality when I could actually hear music from my left ear again. It absolutely amazing. Anyway I did some KZbin searching for an aftershokz review and deafness and it lead me here. Thank you so much for covering this. You've made my night.

Bone conduction headsets are especially good for any situation in public where you want to be aware of your surroundings. You don't have the best sound quality, but can be aware of what's going on around you. I wear the Trekz Aftershokz headset for road cycling because in the ear headsets are dangerous. They block your hearing vehicle traffic. Because of that our cycling club disallows their use for our group rides. I would also recommend them for folks who run or walk on biking/walking paths. Nothing is more irritating than coming up behind a runner on a path and shouting "on your right" and having them not be able to hear you because their ears are plugged up with a headset. This would also be applicable for individuals walking around streets and traffic. A company called "Coros" has now also come out with this technology built into cycling helmets.

I work at a power plant and around very loud equipment so hours and hours of walking and taking logs gets so dull. I love audio books and podcasts and bone conduction headphones were an absolute perfect tool. I looked at headphone ear plug combinations but I didn’t want to just plug my ears and drown everything out because I do need to hear my surroundings and my radio. Also ear plug headphone combo’s have a lower decibel rating than actual ear plugs and I want to protect my hearing as much as possible. So it works perfectly because I can have my ear plugs in, I can hear my surroundings and radio and the bone conduction headphones work even better with ear plugs, especially when I just use it for spoken word media like books and podcasts

Super helpful. I had an ear tumor removed (vestibular schwannoma) thus I can only hear out of 1 ear so it was super helpful to know that bone conduction is not a magic pill that would allow hearing in my deaf ear. I've been using bone conduction for a few years now. I've had cheap corded headphones & I have owned all types of Bluetooth ones we well. Even purchased some ear bugs & I can tell you that bone conduction is the best. I can workout with them on, I work outside & they don't slide out of my ears due to sweat or ear wax. Plus I can have them on & still hear my surroundings. They suck for loud nosies like running the lawnmower but they should come with plugs to put in your ears to fix that issue. Drawback: sound quality isn't that great compared to the ear buds or over the ear headphones but hey it's a small sacrifice to gain so much freedom & reliability.

I have bluetooth bone conduction and i like this hearing method,,i tried a experiment with bone conduction and i downloaded a frequency generator application and i try a 22KHz tone and i heard this frequency and for me that was very impressive and still unbelievable !!! Due to bluetooth it limits at 22KHz (due to 44.1KHz samplerate) after that i tried with piezoelectric sensor as speaker and i touch it next to my ears and i hear maximum at ~40KHz but it hurts and with spectrum analyzer i checked if theres harmonics etc but on the air (normal hearing) i hear at ~19KHz. I dont know if older ages can hear above 20KHz with bone conduction.

As for sound quality I find it is good for my needs which are audiobooks, meetings and music. My hearing loss is not a conduction loss so hearing of music is not improved with this device and if turned up loud the vibration from the bass is very annoying (even vertigo causing at times). Great introduction to Bone Conduction Headphones. One question though: Do they also double up as 'Hearing Aids'? Do they have microphones? I have to wear hearing aids - and I just found out why for me it is imperative: I listened to the output on my computer to a variable frequency generator and was appalled to find I could not hear any frequency above 700Hz. Until I retired I was a Piano Tuner - in a prestigious Opera House - not only pianos, though, but Harpsichords as well. As my hearing degenerated I turned to getting some expensive hearing aids. Then discovered they distorted the tones I was listening to in a most unfortunate way called 'aliasing'. This is when a tone is modified and caused to have another tone riding on it - like a deep vibrato. This can be adjusted in 'settings' on the hearing aids but with the result that the sound level goes down. Which makes difficulty in tuning Harpsichords in a live environment. Hence my interest in using Bone Conduction Headphones - and - can they be used as hearing aids?? I look forward to your reply Dr. Olson.

I just purchased the AFTERSHOKZ OPENCOMM bone conducting headphones and I LOVE IT!! I work 100% remote and am a trainer for a clinical software complany. What that means is I am on a Zoom training session for 6-7 hours a day. I needed to have headphones that not only produced good sound, but were also comfortable. The traditional headphones had iffy mics and my ears sweat at the end of the day. Plus I couldn't hear myself talk clearly and was always talking louder than I needed to. I tried wireless earbuds but after a full day of work my ears hurt. If I wore them for 2 work days in a row, my ear would swell up and become painful to the touch. The bone conducting headphones are a GodSend! I can hear clearly. People on my Zoom calls have said that I sound clear and now my ears are not hurting at all!! I am going to try these on my 83 year old father who has hearing issues to see if they help him as well! Dr. Cliff says that one of the "Cons" to wearing these type of headphones is the pressure you feel. I disagree. Great overview of the science and benefits of this tech. I just picked up a pair of AfterShokz Trekz Air's for running. They're my first pair of bone conducting headphones and, while they're relatively expensive when compared to alternatives (a lot more tbh), they're the most comfortable headphones I've worn while running. They don't require pushing them back in repeatedly once I start sweating, there's no cable hitting the back of my neck, and I can hear people and traffic. They're just great. I've been going around the internet praising bone conduction headphones now. heh. If the ones you wear to the gym are even mildly uncomfortable you should find somewhere to test the ones I have because I barely feel them at all. Though like you said, the sound quality is noticeably worse. Perhaps even worse in the Air's because they don't really compress much but I have no point of reference. Actually, I just noticed you're linking to the Titanium's! Now I'm really curious which you would prefer. Other reviewers that tried both said they prefer the Air's but someone on Amazon preferred the Titanium's. I don't really trust the other youtube reviews because they might just be trying to get conversions for the more expensive pair. You should ask AfterShokz for a pair to test.

One "con" he doesn't mention is that you can't keep these headphones in place when you lean back in an easy chair or couch if the back of your head will contact the back of the couch or chair.

The Trek Air's that I have work ok, as the band can actually be positioned so it rests on your lower skull rather than floating in the air above the neck. I find these great for having on to take phonecalls for work all day and also be able to listen to music and talk to people. I use them while mountain biking too. The quality is not the same as expensive earbuds or headphones, but still better than cheap ones, and do a great job around the positive points. I hate in ear buds when eating, or chewing, as the sound echos from the plugs, these work well to avoid that being an issue.

Thanks for telling it straight. Round earbuds of all sizes cause me a lot of pain and pop out even when I'm sitting still. The only comfortable ones I've ever found were the "Apple" style that have the more boxy shape and are hard than the soft round ones, but trying to search for good quality sound with that shape is nearly impossible. This sounds like something worth trying out! Thank you!

I realize I am responding to a two year old post but thought I would give it a shot. Have you come across persons getting dizzy/disoriented from the use of bone conductive headphones?? After a day of some significant use of my new bone conductive headphones I was fine and went to bed fine but the next morning I was totally dizzy and puking. Eyes open or closed, the world was whirling around my head. I required assistance to get to the bathroom where I puked. After being led to a recliner, everything really whirling, I puked some more. This lasted all day and significantly less next morning but not gone.

I just got a pair and I really like them - I do have conductive hearing loss. That said, what I didn't realise is that there's no way for me to wear them at the same time as my hearing aids! So I still need to take out my HA's to use them but I can still hear my environment with my limited hearing while using them versus not at all with my regular in-ear buds.

I use a pair for swimming laps. AfterShokz XtrainerZ is an MP3 player you load up with up to 1200 songs. They work great while doing laps. I also use the accompanying ear plugs. This keeps water out and sound out too so you don’t have to crank up the volume too much. Under water they are actually louder. The water amplifies. Yea they ain’t high fidelity, but for swimming they are the only really good option.

@@iconicshrubbery , hey Dave. I’m loving them. I’ve had them about 8 months (other than when the pool was closed) and used them 4 times per week for about 90 minutes each time. They aren’t Bose quality, but surprisingly good for hearing tunes while swimming. It would be boring otherwise. It makes long distance swimming tolerable. They make the time go faster. I recommend them highly. Several of my pool mates have bought them since seeing mine. And I believe AfterShokz is having a sale this weekend on them. Got an email yesterday with a $30 off. So if you are considering, now is the time. I believe they also have a 2 year warranty. Good luck. Oh and also, yes they are comfortable under the swim cap. In fact it helps them sit closer on the skin, making the sound a little bit better. Make sure you use the accompanying ear plugs. They help with keeping out ambient sound, making the music sound better.

The video that I am watching is 4 years old. I purchased a bone conduction headset that was a cheap knock off. It was under $40. They were pretty bad but it did let me know about the technology. So I went bigger in price. I purchased from Best Buy the SHOKZ Open Run Pro for $129.00. WOW!!! The sound quality and performance is fabulous. Most of the time I don't even know I'm wearing them and have fallen asleep with them on. I work emergencies and wildland fires. It's wonderful that I can hear everything around me as well as who is on the phone or whatever Bluetooth device I am using. I ask people when on the phone do I sound clear at your end? They say yes it's clear. I hear them clear as well. If I turn them all the way up I can enjoy the stereo music. If I want to enhance the sound I use foam earplugs as well. Great if you're flying. If there is just too much interference from what's going on around me I will use one plug only to applify 1 ear. I am able to hear clearly out of the other. Battery life is long. There are times when I am working that I do not have access to an Electrical plug. So I went back to Best Buy and purchased 2 more. I consider this one of the best investments I have made. I find myself asking people constantly if they understand or know about bone conduction headsets. If they say no I will ask them if they would like to know what they are. I let them know. I do the same when I see people with the phone to their ear or on speaker yelling at the phone, I find a way to approach them, inform them and show them what bone conduction headsets are. Not one person has been negative about this information being passed on to them. The SHOKZ Open Run Pro have received several high praises by people who have tried them. The future is here now.

So I don't have any hearing problems, but I am adhd and wearing earbuds usually tunes me out of this world! Lol. So I bought a pair of AfterSchocks and I loved them, but I also wear perscripton glasses, and the tightness of the headphones over my glasses really hurt after a while. But then I found Lucyd! Lucyd is a company that makes bone conduction perscripton glasses and sunglasses and they are amazing! You can pull up your Google assistant or Siri with one touch, or your voice! They read your text messages to you, you can take phone calls. You can also dictate text messages and send them with just your voice! I just got mine in the mail, and I love them! I'll never own another pair of glasses ever again!

I've got a bone conduction headset. I don't generally listen to music on it, but it's part of my daily life nonetheless. I use them for calls or podcasts while I'm driving and as a gaming headset. In both use-cases the fact that they do not cover my ear is what sold me on them. While driving it's important to hear what's around you, and I game in a home theater where I spent thousands of dollars of sound equipment. I don't want to turn all that off to listen to my games in pseudo surround sound in a 300 dollar headset.

40 years ago my friend had something called a BONEPHONE. It looked like a small stole. It went around the back of your neck and the speakers sat on your collarbones right below your ears. You felt the bass in your collarbones and the speakers could be quite loud in your ears but really low to everyone else, and depending on how loud you had them, you could hear what was happening around you. I loved them but I never saw them again anywhere.

After almost 4 years, this may or may not be pertinent to the video ... Another reason I prefer bone conduction earphones (Trekz Titanium) is that I wear IE hearing aids which couple to my phone via BT. I don't need to physically remove my HA's to use regular in-the-ear 'phones or ear buds, which would negate the ability to receive phone calls. True, the fidelity isn't on par with higher priced 'phones or 'buds, but I've learned to adapt to their use to maintain convenience with phone usage. The only drawback is that during today's epdemic (COVID-19), my ears are crowded with HA's, eyeglasses, conduction headphones, AND face masks. all that makes having big ears a plus. (:-)

Great video, but one thing you didn’t mention at least from what I heard is how impossible it is to hear the music. For example, if I am jogging outside and hear a car pass by for a second I can’t hear my music. It becomes a real problem if there is a lot of noise next to me, like a crowd of people. That’s why I say this is good for working out, but for general use it’s horrible

Hey Cliff, you should review the Nuraphone since it combines otoacoustic emission testing with consumer grade headphones to create a customized eq profile. Not just that but the actual sound delivery method is truly unique with the woofer outside of the ear and the tweeter in the canal (picture wearing air pods with headphones over them). As a BC-HID and general technology/computer geek I always recommend this headphone over any other hands down. I think a review would make for solid youtube content. Just make sure you film your reaction during initial setup when comparing flat to custom eq, and if you want that front row seat at a concert experience immersion level 4 is my sweet spot.

Hi Rob. Bone conduction headphones wouldn't amplify speech for him, it only plays music and speech from phone calls. There are easier options for him if he wants to hear people talking to him. A Full Shell In-The-Ear hearing aid would be MUCH easier for him to get into his ear and use. If he can't use one of those, then he may want to consider a "Pocket talker". It looks like headphones attached to a microphone on the end of a long cord.

The transducers are designed differently. One is designed to move air particles as the conductor of sound, the other is designed to use bone as the conductor of sound. Ultimately, yes if any transducer is vibrated strong enough, it could move air particles.
