There'a a place on City Island in BX that strings fishing line above the dining area outside. The birds have gotten tangled up in them so much they don't bother dive-bombing the patrons ay longer. Now its safe to eat outside when it's warm out.

Once while I was in Atlantic city I got a Sausage and pepper sandwich I was walking on the boardwalk and a lady warned me about the sea gulls dive bombing people's food well the bird attacked my sandwich and I had to get another one I ate the second one inside the booth

I feel you. That water is called the Inter-Coastal Waterway (ICW) You can take it most of the way, up to Jersey actually. I actually was charged for the extra thinks like cheese, peppers, bummer.
