Does the term "Born Again" apply to Catholics? Or is this just a protestant idea? In this episode of Catholic Feedback, Keith interacts with a video and question sent to him by a listener asking about how Catholics should respond to questions about salvation and what it means to be a christian.

As a Baptist I understand this, but attending mass over the years, I heard salvation in every mass I attended. I have listened to various priests over this last year and searching more understanding of Mary, the Eucharist. I am attending mass once a week, and praying to understand where the Lord is leading. I am 71 and I truly received Christ as my Savior at the age of 23, and I was never the same. I have followed hard after the Lord, but as you said once, Catholicism is a fulfillment of everything and more of everything I have practiced all these years. I do not want to be impulsive so I am trusting in the Lord as he leads. I enjoy your podcasts.

My husband and I and our four kids were finally fully received last month on the vigil of Pentecost. Your conversion story was one of the first I watched a couple years ago when my heart was being thrown open to the Church. Those early church fathers, man. They’ll getcha lol. Now we are surrounded by our Protestant friends (thankfully some great Catholic families now too) and it is SO HARD to talk to them about our Catholic faith. Everyone has these regurgitated assumptions that I used to hold to. We’re just committed to growing in our faith now as Catholics and also in charity towards our friends who don’t see what they don’t see. Thank you for your ministry Keith 🙏🏻

My eyes where turned to God again by Ray's videos, and I thank him for that. But my struggles with lust, fornication and masturbation that I had where only addressed, when I looked into the Catholic faith, And I thank Jason Evert and especially Christopher West for that. Having a teaching authority has the great advantage that good teaching will be propagated effectively, while the same thing would disintegrate into word studies by scholarly elites in Protestant circles. Thankfully the Holy Spirit is beyond and above that, and brings the sheep to the Shepherd.

Yes Catholics are born again when we are baptised. We are baptised into the death and resurrection of Jesus. The Catholic Church teaches baptismal regeneration ! Just because the Protestants popularise the word "born again" it doesn't mean the teaching didn't come from the Catholic Church. I am sorry and anxious the Catholic Church had always poor catechism unfortunately.

Even so, the most popular Saints and theologists of the Catholic Church did challenge the Church. They were often penalized by the Church and even excommunicated. The difference between them and Protestants is that those Saints never left the Church. They remain until the second coming so that the Church can be on the right path.

Well said, after some time in the evangelical Protestant realm I found that it’s mostly a catch phrase that most Christians can’t define. It should be said it’s the day you started being saved because you have to persevere and continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling…

The difference is in definition. Catholics believe being born again is through the sacraments. Protestants believe being born again is through confession of Jesus as Messiah. Peter’s Confession of Christ 13 Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” 15 He *said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Just like a tree cannot bring forth fruit (good works) without being rooted in good ground; so it is for a person who cannot bring forth fruit (good works) without being grounded in good soil (faith). Faith alone justifies one before God through Jesus; good works is the fruit of that justifying faith.

@@dannisivoccia2712 that’s like asking which wing of your airplane is the most important. James, speaking specifically about salvation, says faith alone cannot save you. Hebrews says that Jesus is the author of salvation to those who obey Him, plus we will be judged by our works. Faith alone is a 16th Century innovation that the church never taught before that time. This it is a heresy.

@@trailrvs Say, "Faith alone cannot save you" to the thief on the cross, or anyone else who may not have a chance to produce good works. Justification by faith alone is all that is needed for one to be saved, unless you have a different definition of the word "justified." To justify someone is to say that whatever bad fruit that person had.brought forth is ERASED. In James, the Apostle is saying that faith that does not produce good fruit is simply not the faith that pleases God. One may need two wings on their plane to get to long distances, but a helicopter will do splendidly for unforseen short distances.

@@dannisivoccia2712 the thief on the cross was living under the old covenant and the law of Moses, so that example would not apply. One thing that irks me more than anything is when people make "BORN AGAIN" a cheesy buzz phrase, taking it totally out of the BIBLICAL context, and twisting Jesus's words to mean simply, "Just loving Jesus." But what did Jesus mean in John 3:3-5? Simple. Jesus says, "Truly, truly, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." When Jesus said "water and the Spirit," He was referring to baptism (which requires the use of water, and the work of the Spirit). We see this within the context of the conversation with Nicodemus. Shortly after, what happens? Well, in John 3:22, Jesus and the disciples went into Judea where the disciples baptized. Jesus' teaching about being reborn by water and the Spirit is in the context of baptism (cf. John 4:1). I will get back to this shortly. Now it is a common error (many Baptist pastors I have debated hold to this) that when Jesus said "water" here he really didn't mean "water" but rather "the Word of God." Yet we read in Ephesians 5:26 that "water" and "the Word" are two separate things. Paul writes that Jesus makes the Church pure, "by the washing with water through the word". The water washes THROUGH/BY/WITH the word, but is not the word itself. In Titus 3:5-6, we see that Paul writes about the “washing of regeneration,” which is “poured out on us” in reference to water baptism. “Washing” ("loutron") generally refers to a ritual washing with water. Indeed, “He saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, which He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ, so that we might be justified by His grace and become heirs of eternal life.” This is a powerful text which proves that baptism regenerates our souls and is thus salvific. The “washing of regeneration” “saves us.” Regeneration is never symbolic, and the phrase “saved us” refers to salvation. By baptism, we become justified by His grace (interior change) and heirs of eternal life (filial adoption). Because this refers to baptism, the verse is about the beginning of the life in Christ. No righteous deeds done before baptism could save us. Righteous deeds after baptism are necessary for our salvation. There is also a definite parallel between John 3:5 and Titus 3:5: (1) John 3:5 - enter the kingdom of God / Titus 3:5 - He saved us. (2) John 3:5 - born of water / Titus 3:5 - washing. (3) John 3:5 - born of the Spirit / Titus 3:5 - renewal in the Spirit. And of course, Romans 6 tells us why and how we are born again through baptism since we die to our old selves and to sin through baptism : "...don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the deadthrough the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. " For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin- because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. " Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all;but the life he lives, he lives to God. "In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace." (v.3-14) Gal. 3:27 tells us that whoever is baptized in Christ puts on Christ. The Holy Spirit actually dwells within our soul. Peter expressly writes (1 Peter 3:21) that “baptism, corresponding to Noah's ark, now saves you; not as a removal of dirt from the body, but for a clear conscience. “ Hence, the verse demonstrates that baptism is salvific (it saves us), and deals with the interior life of the person (purifying the conscience, like Heb. 10:22), and not the external life (removing dirt from the body). Many scholars believe the phrase "not as a removal of dirt from the body" is in reference to the Jewish ceremony of circumcision (but, at a minimum, shows that baptism is not about the exterior, but interior life). Baptism is now the “circumcision” of the new Covenant (Col. 2:11-12), but it, unlike the old circumcision, actually saves us, as Noah and his family were saved by water. Again, notice the parallel between Heb. 10:22 and 1 Peter 3:21: (1) Heb. 10:22 - draw near to the sanctuary (heaven) / 1 Peter 3:21 - now saves us. (2) Heb. 10:22 - sprinkled clean, washed with pure water / 1 Peter 3:20-21 - saved through water, baptism. (3) Heb. 10:22 - from an evil conscience (interior) / 1 Peter 3:21 - for a clear conscience (interior). Titus 3:6 and 1 Peter 3:21 also specifically say the grace and power of baptism comes “through Jesus Christ” (who transforms our inner nature). (cf. Acts 8:12-13; 36; 9:18; 10:47 ; 16:15; 31-33; 18:8; 19:2,5; Acts 22:16 - Ananias tells Paul, "arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins," and his phrase "wash away" comes from the Greek word "apolouo." "Apolouo" means an actual cleansing which removes sin. It is not a symbolic covering up of sin. Even though Jesus chose Paul directly in a heavenly revelation, Paul had to be baptized to have his sins washed away.; cf. 2 Kings 5:14 ; Isaiah 44:3; Ezek. 36:25-27) (There are even those who will go so far as to say the "water" in John 3:3 is just amniotic fluid... but that too is a bit goofy.) Some points then to highlight again from John: John 1:31-34: Jesus was baptized. If you compare the parallel passage in St. Matthew’s gospel (3:16), you find that when Jesus was baptized, “the heavens were opened” and the Spirit descended upon him. Obviously, this was not because Jesus needed to be baptized. In fact, St. John the Baptist noted that he needed to be baptized by Jesus (see Matthew 3:14)! Jesus was baptized in order “fulfill all righteousness” and “to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,” according to Scripture (cf. Matt. 3:15; Luke 1:77). In other words, Jesus demonstrably showed us the way the heavens would be opened to us so that the Holy Spirit would descendupon us… through baptism. John 2:1-11: Jesus performed his first miracle. He transformed water into wine. Notice, Jesus used water from “six stone jars … for the Jewish rites of purification.” According to the Septuagint as well as the New Testament these purification waters were called "baptismoi" (see the Septuagint: Numbers 19:9-19; cf. Mark 7:4). We know that Old Testament rites, sacrifices, etc. were only “a shadow of the good things to come” (Hebrews 10:1). They could never take away sins. This may well be why “six” stone jars are specified by St. John-to denote imperfection, or “a human number” (cf. Rev. 13:18). It is interesting to note that Jesus transformed these Old Testament baptismal waters into wine-a symbol of New Covenant perfection (see Joel 3:18; Matthew 9:17). John 3:22: Immediately after Jesus’ “born again” discourse to Nicodemus, what does He do? "... Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized." It appears he baptized folks. This is the only time in Scripture we find Jesus apparently actually baptizing. John 4:1-2: Jesus’ disciples then begin to baptize at Jesus’ command. It appears from the text, Jesus most likely only baptized his disciples and then they baptized everyone else. Early Christians unanimously saw being "born again" occurring in baptism: www.catholic.com/tracts/born-again-in-baptism

I was so surprised to learn you attend the Latin Mass! We need more folks like you!! I am more like you then the typical “trad”. I met with our Latin Priest last week and we discussed ways to build community within our parish. How to evangelize. We have three separate groups, NO, Spanish and TLM. He would like all to be one and be Latin. He knows if he preaches to the other Masses like he can with the LM, folks will leave. It’s a fine line he walks. Glad I am not a man and a priest . My pews would be empty 😉 Except for maybe that old man in the back who is hard of hearing! Great video btw!

@Katherine. I am not sure if many of the NO Masses are 'badly celebrated". I am not here to debate the NO/TLM but I like to share with you my experiences from someone who lives outside the US. I have attended NO Masses in Lincolnshire, Chicago; Lake Mary, Orlando and Tempe, Arizona and they are all reverently celebrated. I have attended reverently celebrated NO Masses in Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Budapest, HK, Taiwan, Sydney City Central , Melbourne City Central , Perth - a few different parishes, Singapore and Bali. The various recent Eucharistic miracles all happened in NO Masses. This proves that God approves of the NO Masses if reverently celebrated. In Africa and Asia, where NO Mass is 99%, the Catholic Church experiences the fastest growth and Catholics here are orthodox and traditional in their beliefs. The TLM is a beautiful and holy legacy. It must be preserved at all costs and celebrated. The NO is a Magisterium approved rite. The Magisterium is never wrong. Only quack celebrants don't do it properly thereby tainting the NO. In my parish 43 people were baptised last year. My parish is 4000+ and fully NO. The assistant parish priest was knocked down by a van two weeks ago and put in ICU. Daily rosary Zoom sessions is organised for the past 2 weeks . The first time they set aside 500 online places but it was busted. Many couldn't join in and the 500 places were oversubscribed. The parish then opened up to 1000 places and still insufficient. God has turned a tragedy into a victory. More than 25% or 1000 people praying the rosary at the same time. The priest is recovering well daily with God's grace and people's prayers.

Thanks Keith for your feedback! As a cradle and cultural Catholic people who ask those types of questions seem so self righteous and never seem to shock me. My belief doesn’t let me understand how someone can walk around thinking that they can take on the role of God, to assume that they can cast judgment upon others knowing who are saved and who is condemned? I believe that we should never play God simply because we can recite the Bible. I pray that my Catholic guilt and faith wouldn’t let me walk around town feeling so self righteous 😅🙏🏼

As Christians practising within the Catholic church and knowing and honouring the mother of God, we also have Marian apparitions usually including the giving if healing waters such as Lourdes and Mary always leads us to her son and requests we convert and pray for conversions. Protestants could be used as instruments of conversion if they knew true catechesis. To be born again is to be awake and willing to love, know and follow Christ Jesus.

This man believes in once saved always saved, faith alone and sola scriptura...he takes excerpts from the bible and the Catholic catechism out of context....to try to bolster his point of view...not open to constructive dialogue or open to Truth. He takes partial truths but doesn't give the full story. Look at the two theives on the cross...if once saved always saved were true both would be in heaven but one theif rejected Christ and the other one repented and went to His kingdom that very day the other one was separated from Christ for all eternity.

If any one quotes 1 John 5:13 ask them to read the whole letter . John says these things I have written to you. What has he written. There are at least 22 ifs in his letter. After these 22 ifs then comes the line these things I have written to you. It’s time Protestants turn their gaze to viewing the Bible holistically rather than cherry picking verses to support their own line of beliefs.

The first U.S. Presidential candidate to describe himself as "Born Again" was Jimmy Carter in 1976. In 1980, all three major candidates identified as such. For a country based on Protestantism, it seems strange that it took that long for leaders to claim that title. The movement (that's all it is, a fairly new movement) started in the early 1900's. It really began to gain momentum when Chuck Colson wrote his book, "Born Again" in 1975 (from jail) and it was published the following year.

I think this country, even tho the founding fathers were protestants, was founded on Freemasonry. I see a lot of comments from protestants, atheists, and patriots alike, claiming that the state our nation is in today, would make the founding fathers roll over in their graves. I don't think that at all, I think this is the eventual outcome when they decided the Church has no authority. Separation of Church and State. They had to have known what was to eventually become of this nation when they moved away from God.

What Todd Friel is trying to do is make sure these two gentlemen are placing their faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ who kept the law perfectly. He is using the 10 Commandments to show that we have not kept the law. He is doing this so that we stop trusting in our own good works. If you listen closely, he talks about our good works as our proper response to God's grace. Sometimes as I listen to your channel, Keith, you speak as though you never were Protestant. It seems that your Protestant past should help you shed light with your listeners about the Protestant perspective. Instead, you seem utterly baffled with the Protestant perspective and antagonistic. Contrast this with Austin Suggs' posture when he encounters different perspectives that he may not necessarily agree with.

Protestantism was founded by Self Appointed Freelance Bible Interpreters, with no authority to teach in the name of Jesus Christ. One need only read Acts 15 or see how Church authority is always the key. When followers of Jesus began teaching independently without the authority of the apostles, they even argued against Paul, thus Paul went to settle the question with the apostles at the Council of Jerusalem. Christ did not hand out Bibles, instead He founded a Church with authority to teach in His name throughout the ages. We got the Bible from God through His Church. Thus to argue against the Church is to argue against Christ. Even the devil himself quoted the Sacred Scriptures to Jesus.
