Why does it sometimes seem that when Protestants and Catholics talk/argue, we are on different planets? How do we deal with that? Argue? Ignore? Is there another way? Former Protestant Pastor/Catholic convert Keith Nester breaks it down.

A group of Protestants that was trying to convert me, actually brought me back to the Catholic Church. God TRULY works in a mysterious way. During one of many Bible studies we use to have, this friend literally said. "I don't know why, but today God is telling me to talk about the History of the Bible." I was actually chocked by how anti-Catholic she was, almost seemed like hate. As Catholics we are not raised to think like that, for me it was a complete surprise to hear other Christian brothers talk like that, as Catholics we don't know much about Protestantism, so simply we don't talk about it, we barely know our won faith, let alone commenting on others. After that session, I actually became interested in knowing how the Bible appeared, and here I'm back to the Catholic Church. If the majority of Catholics knew their faith, they would never leave the Church, when you finally discover the truth, you realize that there's no other place to go. Personally, I don't hate Protestants, I pray the Rosary for them, actually I pray for all of us, the entire world. The more we pray, more souls are going to be saved.

You were right about everything you said. We as Catholics were never taught to hate our sister/brothers from other denominations. In fact, we always pray during the Holy Mass for our unification. It was also struck me, when I was talking to my Protestant friends, how they talked lowly about Mother Mary and the Saints. And they were brave to say that Catholics have been drifted away from the Bible. I am not kind of person who likes to debate about my Catholics faith, because I don't like frictions as a result of so called discussions. Most of the times I only say that we follow 3 pillars of faith, the Bible, Traditions (as what our Apostles had showed us at the beginning of the Church), and Magistarium. Not only the Bible

What you're saying is so true! I'm from Europe and our country is mostly Catholic (sadly, culturally more than anything) but I didn't even know who protestants were as there's less of them here as muslims. I was only ever taught how to be a Catholic and that's it - no hatred for anyone else, nothing. I'm pretty informed about it now and it really helped shape my own identity as a Catholic but I would never treat them the way I notice they treat us.

The second time I attempted RCIA (I quit the first time after about 6 weeks) I was trying to come into it in the middle of it, the director wisely said no, I had been studying the church for 6 years , they knew I was knowledgeable , but I had not been a regular attender of Mass. She said that I may have the knowledge but I need to learn the culture.......there is difference. Thankfully, I took her advice and received Confirmation Easter Vigil of last year. I haven't looked back!

Fat Puppy It took me time as well...from first time with RCIA through some marriage issues and such to finally receiving all the sacraments several years later after going through RCIA again. During that time I did go through some different emotions... mostly aggravation about not being able to receive the sacrements though I was faithfully attending mass. I eventually got to a place where I realized what was necessary and saw it as a time for “offering up suffering” and the desire for the Eucharist becoming so strong as I waited. It was a time for me to grow and that is always good for us. God knew what needed to happen. His timing, not mine.

"Catholic" is a term first used by St. Ignatius of Antioch (a student of St. John and St. Peter). It is a greek word that means "universal". He implored the early churches to "obey their bishops and avoid schisms". As a former Protestant, that statement blew me away, and I became Catholic.

Kristen Studebaker I am with you. I was born a Catholic of a minority’s in Albania in 70-is, after Ottoman Empire for 400 years, then with a dictatorship on our head, not allowing you to worship. I never heard of protestant Christians until I came west. You only strengthen my belief and faith. Thank you and God bless.

As a Protestant from another continent I realise that guys like you and Scott Hahn etc are very evangelical and I like much what you say but I wonder if you really understand Catholicism in other contexts than the American one?

@@Tsumebleraar There’s only One Holy Apostolic Church, the Catholic Church there’s no other substitute outside of her, if you are not part of the founding Church of Jesus Christ you have no Salvation, all other imitated man made denominations are not Christian I don’t like saying it but it’s the TRUTH.

The vitriol I've received from certain protestants has been very bothersome. I'm thankful I am better at apologetics now bc I genuinely desire for ALL to become part of our one True Faith.

Alex Aez I find the Protestants valuable to the Catholic Church for their insistence that the Bible is to be read. I remember growing up and our Bible, laced in gold, was very nice decoration, but not ever opened. We relied on Sunday Mass for the 3 short Readings every week. It wasn’t until my adulthood that I started wondering what was in that Bible and bought a KJV. I read it and didn’t really understand the depths of it. It wasn’t until a complete immersion of the Bible and studying it day and night that I started to understand it. For those who don’t take the time to learn the Bible, the Catholic Church is excellent. For those who want to study Gods Word, the Catholic Church is still excellent. But, for those who read and misinterpret the Bible, the Protestant Church is a disaster. Hence, all the denominations. It’s a lot like the 7 Churches in Revelation. Some Churches doing ok, but almost all got warnings from God. Why would God give us a warning if it wasn’t damaging to our Salvation? The one thing that God hates is Lukewarm. Whether you are Protestant or Catholic, don’t be Lukewarm! And, above all, the Greatest of these Commandments was to Love One Another. No need to argue over who loves God more, Catholics or Protestants. I don’t see how you can go wrong if you have the Bible or a good Church. When the Church goes into lockdown, the Bible will be very important. And, of course, interpretation will be very important. If you don’t know the Bible very well, you may be in a big panic. @@olderchap8949 Thank goodness that the Catholic Church gave the world the Bible. Since it did, you can now read it and, through the 2000 years of Catholic Teachings, you can understand it, and, as a bonus, it makes a good decoration in your living room.

As St-Jean Marie Vianney said: to be a saint you need 3 things: Humility, humility and humility! I am a cradle Catholic and yet, I was filled with pride. I fell into a life of sin until the Good Lord gave me a slap. I came back to confession and instead of novus ordo Mass as in the pass, He called me to the latin Mass. But the best thing is that He opened my eyes and told me to ask for humility. Now I can say that for God to do this for ME, someone prayed for me. So the best thing I can say here Keith, pray for them and the Good Lord will open there eyes! God Bless and keep up the good work!

I'm a convert from Protestantism ( first 50 years of my life ). Now as a Catholic, I have been accused of being in a cult and have even been called the son of Satan for being a Catholic. However, none of that changes the joy that I find in knowing my relationship with Christ as my Savior. It amazes me how professing Christians on both sides of this go for the JUGULAR vein out for the blood of the other professing Christian when we serve the same risen Savior. I met with a Southern Baptist friend of mine who told me that he still believed we'd see each other in heaven one day. At least he didn't doom me to hell for now being Catholic. I think dialogue can be beneficial to both sides when done with love and being Christ like about it. Personally, I like to know why someone believes what they believe without arguing about it. It's like a question that I asked an ex-Catholic on KZbin recently about whether he ever 100% believed in the Eucharist as the Catholic Church teaches and his reply was that he never understood it. That helps me reconcile why someone would leave the Catholic Church if they never understood something that is so central to the Catholic faith.

I felt this way after I wanted to become a Christian and remain Catholic. I was shocked at how the Christians chewed each other up online and hatefully they spoke to one another. When I expressed my views of Mother Teresa, I was told she was cruel! I was also told that the Church was satanic because we had rituals and were therefore pagan. I watch them practically tear each other's throats out online berating and judging each other and then justifying it, saying they were MORE BIBLICAL and so and so is a false prophet. I don't have that kind of DRAMA being a Catholic. I'm happy right where I am; three rows from the front ;))

Being a Catholic christian is so beautiful. I love the Eucharist , the best part of the holy mass when Christ said “ THIS IS MY BODY. ......” Another beautiful thing being catholic christian is that I have friends here on earth and I have saints who will intercede for me, I have a guardian angel and most importantly I have a Mother of Christ .

yep. exactly the same for me. I am a former protestant, now a catholic and several times a day they condemn me to hell, call me a "pagan" a "with" "child of satan" etc etc etc Such LOVE these fundies have in their hearts (snicker) Some of the worst on on KZbin. You should look up ruben israel, he is one of the nastiest fundies that walks the earth, calling every normal woman who passes by a "slut" and a "whore" and he goes out of his way to go to Catholic churches to scream at them with a megaphone while he pats himself on the back for being a "good christian" These people are so repulsive, only a really foolish person would be converted to their phony faith by their behaviour.

This is a real issue, especially when talking with my sister. If I mention anything about the Catholic Church, her eyes kinda glaze over as if she’s afraid she might hear a truth. She immediately puts up a wall. I was a Protestant (mostly Southern Baptist and also AG) for most of my adult life before converting. I think she still believes that my conversion is just a “phase.” I should add that I’m the “baby” sister of the family. Pretty sure she is “praying” I will come to my senses 😂.

Joe Houston Thankyou for that. Praying for them. I have heard of a lot of persecution to Christians. There is a Jewish group that has been raising money to send to them because they know what it is like. I think Glen Beck has something to do with it.

Thanks! This was good, with a strong ending. I'm a protestant intrigued by the Catholic way. I have a friend, a Lutheran pastor, who said that he's no longer looking at a persons denomination, but only at a persons Christlikeness. When he meets Christ in a person, he allows that person to speak into his life as a brother, despite church backgroud.

Yep, I had a conversation once a protestant family member and we literally were speaking past each other and it is because if you look at the big picture, we have completely different understanding about sin, Christ's atonement for our salvation, rule of faith, history ect. There are misunderstandings and misconceptions that happen on both sides of the Catholic Protestant divide. Catholics make the mistake of trying to frame all protestants under the Lutheran Sola theology, but you really have to listen and see what that individual person actually believes (do a google search for all the churches near you and you will discover the fragmentation). Protestants mistake is they will believe in the misconceptions of what the Catholic Church teaches and they try to make it look like it is against the Bible. The thing that is also a huge mountain that I see also is no one wants to be wrong or admit that what they were taught was wrong. With that said, in my conversation with my protestant family member, it was revealed to me that they were not taught Christian history from the time of the last Apostle to the 16 century and they also had no idea how they got the Bible or who decided what books went into it. Keep stirring the pot Kieth!, when you speak the truth you will be hated so get used to it.

The satisfaction theory of atonement is a theory in Catholic theology which holds the Jesus Christ redeemed humanity through making satisfaction for mankind's disobedience through his own supererogatory obedience. The theory draws primarily from the works of Anselm of Canterbury, specifically his Cur Deus Homo ("Why a God man?"). It has been traditionally taught in the Roman Catholic tradition of Western Christianity. Theologically and historically, the word "satisfaction" does not mean gratification as in common usage, but rather "to make restitution": making an offering the value of which redeems the injury or insult which was inflicted on the offended party. Since one of God's characteristics is justice, affronts to that justice must be atoned for. It is thus connected with the legal concept of balancing out an injustice. Anselm regarded his satisfaction view of the atonement as a distinct improvement over the older ransom theory of atonement, which he saw as inadequate, due to its notion of a debt being owed to the devil. Anselm's theory was a precursor to the innovations of later theologians like John Calvin, who introduced the idea of Christ suffering the Father's just punishment as a vicarious substitute. Jesus "atoning" for people´s sins is an interesting fairy tale.

@@teenherofilms : The final authority on what Christians should do and believe is what Jesus actually said, not the interpretation of men who came much later and never knew Jesus personally. Therefore, I put 95% of the weight on the first four Gospels, not on what someone said hundreds of years later and was essentially someone's opinion about what Jesus had meant in his Gospel.

@@teenherofilms : The people that wrote the first four Gospels believed in truth and constantly assured their audience that the facts were carefully checked out and was the truth. So unless you are willing to call them liars, there is very high credibility that what they wrote is precisely what Jesus said.

During his lifetime, Jesus himself didn't call himself God and didn't consider himself God, and ... none of his disciples had any inkling at all that he was God. ... Historian Bart Ehrman You do find Jesus calling himself God in the Gospel of John, or the last Gospel. Jesus says things like, "Before Abraham was, I am." These are all statements you find only in the Gospel of John, and that's striking because we have earlier gospels and we have the writings of Paul, and in none of them is there any indication that Jesus said such things. ... I think it's completely implausible that Matthew, Mark and Luke would not mention that Jesus called himself God if that's what he was declaring about himself. That would be a rather important point to make. This is not an unusual view amongst scholars; it's simply the view that the Gospel of John is providing a theological understanding of Jesus that is not what was historically accurate. None of this matters to me. I have already said that I consider the subject a BORE. I get on with my life, not with things that happened twenty centuries ago.

The first use of "Catholic" was by the church father Saint Ignatius of Antioch in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (circa 110 AD). In the context of Christian ecclesiology. Keith, I like your videos.

Sean Smith they don’t have too many problems with this. They have many problems when it comes to the Pope’s. We’ve had some horrible ones throughout the centuries. Martin Luther would have most likely been killed. Protestants have an issue with papal authority

@@cotaryan3740 do you know that not even the most sinful, heretical Popes changed one iota of Catholic dogma? (The teaching of Jesus). Its similar to having a horrible President, the President may be corrupt but he/she does not change the Constitution. The Pope is more like a referee who comes onto the pitch only in the most acute situations where the church must have a decision. The Catholic church does not teach that the Pope is any different from any other human being. He is not more Holy or saintly (although it would be great if he were!) His role is to unify the church and keep her rolling. Despite all the saints and sinners in the church, we are still here 2,000 years later! If that is not the Holy Spirit I don't know what is!

Your perspective from the outside looking in is incredible and so helpful to cradle Catholics in defending the faith. I find myself having silent conversations in my head too. I let my friends rattle on and I smile and shrug my shoulders. I'm going to do my best to stop the shrugging part. 😉. Oh, and I listen to a Catholic You Tuber that says the same thing about comments from people who want to fight. He reads them but never comments. Please don't disable the comments because I enjoy the positive ones so much.

That was so beautiful, Keith. I deeply appreciate your work. I am a Catholic dating someone of Protestant faith. I'm watching your videos and trying to read books to brush up on my catechism because i know we'll have to have deeper discussions on our faith and come to agreement. @The Lesser Confessor I would say the devotion to Saints, the dulia worship and excessive promotion of Mary, and the use of statues and relics in worship. In the OT, God in His Word commanded the specific use of images for Jewish sacrificial worship. Catholic tradition has taken liberties to do the same without the explicit command of God. Furthermore, its members are so poorly educated in the proper use of images that they worship the very object itself. The Catholic church, rather than correct this flaw, endorses it!

Baptism has nothing to do with circumcision. One who repents of their sins ought to be baptized for forgiveness of sins and to identify with the death and resurection of Jesus Chrisr (Rom 6). Baptism has to immersion, not sprinkling. Jesus said in Mathew 28 - baptize them.... teaching them to do all that I commanded. An infant cannot repent. Their Baptism is meaningless.

I would love to see him and Keith talk, but language is a barrier. A lot of ppl think he is on his way to Sainthood. I heard of a miracle that he had to do with. I don't worry about remembering chapter and verse when engaging someone about the faith. We can always turn to google if we are willing to take the time to check it out. In any case, if you are dealing with a Protestant they should know the verse you are talking about since they pride themselves on knowing Scripture.

This is so needed for me right now. So many people I treasure and value are non-Catholic believers and I struggle in that place of tension and Truth. I want to be fully "me" but I hold back because I know how misunderstood our Church is-at the same time I want to have a closeness with people that invites then into who I really am. I guess it comes down to discernment and openings provided by the Holy Spirit. Thank you!! 🙏

Amen brother. I prayed silently to God to enlighten me what is the right religion because a born again Christian convince me some things against Catholic especially Virgin Mary. I asked for a sign and a week after, a missionary came to our house and tell me the story about Consecration To Jesus Through Mary(TCJM). I knew it was the answer to my question, we didn't know each other and a friend just introduced her to me, she just unexpectedly appeared to my house with a friend. I did not tell anyone about my confusion. It is God who communicated me that I am in the right track...Thank you God..

Amen, brother! You're speaking my language here! It's so frustrating trying to talk to people I know who are Protestant Christians when I bring up historical facts and quotes from the Church Fathers and have them respond with something along the lines of "Well, I disagree". It's like we disagree on whether facts are objective or subjective, and whether private opinions are more important than objective facts. Even more difficult is when they get defensive and take your attack on their argument as an attack on them as a person. I just try to remember that love and patience are the keys. And we have to be the light of the world known by our love for one another! Our example in the way we behave may be the only example that they ever get of a Catholic, and we should be someone that other people aspire to be (otherwise they will never want to be a Catholic). Our actions will speak louder than our words or arguments ever will. We only want to correct them out of love, but sometimes it's like trying to get your kid to eat vegetables or to take a life saving bitter medicine. I myself used to be a Protestant so I can relate to them, but I got tired of being my own authority and being my own Pope! Thank God for Church authority and Church teaching or I would also be totally lost when it comes to theology! Above all, though, I am thankful that dialogue is finally taking place between Catholics and Protestants and that it is civil! I may not be able to make them drink but I will surely carry them to water! Just remember this verse next time you find yourself struggling or wrestling with a fellow believer: Genesis 32:28 "Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.” " God bless you!

You're doing a great job with these videos. Keep up the way of the cross. Someday,hopefully a long time from now, these antagonistic comments, emails etc will be used as evidence of persecution for your canonization process. Many saints went out of their way to put themselves in the path of people who would attack them for their faith. St. Padre Pio, pray for Keith, his wife and their ministry.

New[er] subbie here. I have been watching your vids for a few weeks now, and I love the way you explain from a very Christ-like manner. I grew up Catholic, gone Protestant in college, but ultimately came back to the Catholicism. I got to see, learn, and fully experience both sides. I loved how both sides worshiped our Lord, although I must admit, Protestant churches were more "fun." However, whilst Protestant, I still had this "hunger." I prayed and prayed and prayed- alone, and I was led back to Catholicism. One of the biggest thing I learned was that I loved going to Protestant worships bc I enjoyed it, there were a lot of programs, and "mixers." But going to a Catholic church, I was simply going precisely for Christ; it was more of a sacred way of worship that is for HIM and not for me. Thank you, Kieth Nester for being a vessel of Christ. Normally I get easily bored listening to long talks but different videos by apologetics developed my patience & listening & skills.

I'm a 70 year old and convert to Catholicism back in 1970. At my age I'm weary of these Catholic-Protestant arguments. It's simply this - We are on two polar opposite premises. A premise is your starting belief for your faith (in Jesus as your savior). What is the basis of your belief in Jesus? Protestant - The Bible. A no-brainer. What else could there be? Catholic - The Church and it's claim as sole authority to interpret the Bible, the Bible being an important extension of church authority. And that's it. As Catholics, we are not bound to prove all our believes by the Bible, although we could. However, we will not be able to satisfy the Protestant before us of our interpretations since he is one of a myriad of denominations with a myriad of interpretations. The United States is the world headquarters of Protestantism. Characteristics of US culture bear this out - the dislike of institutional authority, the freedom of religion, which although at this point in history is necessary, exacerbates the unity of Christianity, our rugged individualism which favors the individual as interpreter of Scripture, etc. It's tough. As a Catholic, you calmly explain things and don't get rattled if you don't make a dent in their mind set. You may have planted seeds in their thinking.

And the best proof for the Catholic Church's papacy is protestantism. In protestantism there is only confusion. There is no single authority therefore there is no unity. Every Protestant is his own authority, his own pope. The Lord calls on us to be one but protestantism rejects this.

I'm so thankful that you are a Catholic who has love in your heart for other kinds of Christians. You are such a good role model. I'm a Protestant who has a lot of prejudices against Catholics, but I feel that God is calling me to love and respect my Catholic brothers and sisters. I've discovered Father Casey Cole and Father Patrick Tuttle here on KZbin, and those two gentlemen are such special people and they give me a more positive view of Catholicism. I'm not planning to convert to Catholicism, but I just want to lose my negative pre-conceived notions.

This is wonderful advice. I’m a convert like you, who was convinced by facts. I spent 5 years pouring over them. Now, I’m afraid, many people just simply can’t see objective facts, but only see what they wish to be true. What you describe at the end of this video has been my approach so far, not with internet trolls, but with those closest to me in real life. It’s a good start, but the whole thing is still absolutely maddening, and it’s tempting to just run away from it all.

I feel a lot of Love towards both Protestant and Catholic because growing up with a Lutheran father and a Catholic mother both religious views were respected in our home. We went when I was a young girl to a Lutheran church and though I enjoyed it, I was happy to be a member of the Catholic Church. One of the main reason I love Catholicism is how many different ways we can experience the Holy Trinity and the absolute transformation I feel after receiving the Eucharist. The Bible gives us so much Wisdom and I am grateful for the Christians who taught me to go deep into the Bible and the warnings of demons through spiritual warfare. BOTH are beautiful and I am an example of the two types of Christianity that have formed a place in my soul where everyone who is with Jesus is a brother or Sister in Christ Jesus.AMEN & LOVE EVERYONE

Did you know that the words Catholic Church is found for the first time in the letter of St Ignatius written around 110 AD. The Bible as we know it today was completed by the Catholic Church at the synod of Rome in 382 AD.

The books that comprise the Bible existed from the 1st century but they were not gathered together, catalogued, and approved until 382. There were not only the books we have now but there were other writings floating around that did not belong and needed to be excluded. Also, the churches scattered over the world did not have the complete set of books. When Paul wrote to the Corintians the letter went to Corinth, not to the Galatians, and the also the reverse. Corinth didn't have the letter to the Galatians. All the writings had to be collected and approved for the whole (Catholic) church. That was not finally completed until they Church settled the issue.

Couldn't agree more with your view! You continue to tackle "how to elicit responses that will make a person open their eyes!" This has been my most difficult struggle when approaching an agnostic (or atheist) on abortion - that seems to be the hardest nut to crack. From there, it is a constant eye opener!

Great video. My wife and I both watched it. The problem is that people create a reality bubble around the facts they come across in their daily lives and then refuse to believe anyone who might suggest the facts are fake, even when they are shown to be fake. Whenever I am presented with this scenario, I remember the words of Jesus: "If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town." (Matthew 10 : 14-15 NIV)

I am revert who feels more like a convert and really enjoy your videos. One thing I have found helpful when speaking with someone who is not Catholic and has opposing views especially in aspects of faith is to call upon the Holy Spirit immediately. I consecrate my tongue to the Holy Spirit and pray for intercession that it be his words and truth that flows through me and not my own... in charity and love. I would rather speak in love with truth or remain mute and I reach to the Holy Spirit to help me with this. It’s a practice that has served me well. Maybe it can be helpful to you. Peace be with you and may God bless you always. 🙏🏻 :)

Very good overview of TRUTH Keith. Why not go to the mystical side of our faith. It is very mystical to think of Transubstantiation as taught by the Church AND then look at some of the Eucharistic Miracles which SHOW that Jesus is truly present at Holy Communion! (very Biblical). Similarly, Our Lady's apparitions, especially Our Lady of Guadalupe which, since the 1500's has been available for people to see/investigate; showing that She was wearing an outfit which shows the stars as they were, when She appeared, that the image is at body temperature and has a heart beat! There were over 3 million conversations within 12 months of this apparition. Similarly Her many other visitations to plead with people on behalf of Her Son etc right up to current times! Aren't we going to understand such a huge amount, when we meet our Maker! Prayers from The Land of Oz for ALL peoples. PS there is so much to be learnt from the writings of Maria Valtorta; ssssooooooooo much that locations of towns in Israel have been found because of the detail she gives.
