Another great episode. Regarding quotas, it's like asking a baker to make so much wholegrain bread that nobody likes, nobody wants and nobody is buying, but you have to make it.

The truth will out: manufacturers accept criticism assuming it’s not insulting. The feedback shows what issues exist/ good bits that exist in relation to an independent person… so no payment ensures that the truth will out every time. Keep going chaps,it is appreciated…oh, and the podcast is great as well 😁😁

I agree about Goodwood. I felt the 'motorshow' part of the show was very lacking compared to previous years. Even the motorsport paddock seemed a bit lacking too.

Joe - I empathise with your crash (which I’m sure was a lot bigger than mine 5 weeks ago. Large haematoma on my left side plus swelling, lacerations etc), but really nervous about riding again. Out tomorrow for the first proper ride with the group since, also changed to flat pedals which I’ve never used before, so does feel like learning to ride again!!

Interesting chat guys. Are those EV percentages for building or sales? Coz you can force and fine manufacturers into building them, but you can't force people into buying them...

I can see why they've called it a Capri - someone from the naming team was looking over the design team's shoulder and could only see from the top of the front light unit to the top of the rear light unit, ie the 'window line'. From that perspective it is very Capri-esque with the rear quarter window curve. But the Capri made it's name as the UK Mustang, the working man's E Type. It was a sports coupe, not a fat lump with a Capri hat on!!!

Don't forget from April 2025 electric cars are proposed to subject to VED. As a lot of electric cars are over £40k they attract the luxury car tax. Wonder what that will do to sales.

It’s will have zero impact on b2b sales (fleet, company cars, salary sacrifice) which make up the vast majority of EV sales today (as mentioned in the pod). Coupled with depreciation, anyone buying a new EV with actual cash money should be sectioned. I say this as a Polestar 2 company car driver. You can pick up a 1 year old 2 with 10k miles at a massive £20k off list! That’s a massive hit for a private buyer.

Very interesting and informative episode, guys! I can not understand how European manufacturers are forced by government to basically throw away their build up knowledge and technical state of their ice’s by 2030. The top of BMW and Porsche have already warned the German government that they will leave Germany ….

Synthetic sustainable fuels is a better answer than EV. It would mean we don't need to build EVs, which in itself is environmentally disastrous, and we could continue to drive all the cars we currently have.

Two problems with sustainable fuel. 1) High cost (before any taxes) 2) Supply will never meet demand. It will be perfect to keep motorsport and the weekend special drive outs possible, but for everyday use, not a chance!

@@frankyork5808 - synthetic fuel powered cars still have tailpipe emissions. Also, Porsche says it could "produce 100 million litres a year from 2028". Cool. Except that the US alone uses about 9x that much PER DAY. Production will never be enough

The proportion of sales regulation will end up causing unintended consequences. One aspect is already starting. For example, manufacturers will end up calculating the 78% based on how large the 22% is, and not the other way around. This could be why Ford withdrew the Fiesta - its profit margin doesn't warrant being prioritised to be part of the 78%. It could also be that some major manufacturers withdraw from the UK market if the risks around the £15k per unit fine are too high. For example, I believe Toyota has so far sold 1% EVs in 2024 (SMMT) which means that they may have no option but to withdraw. This would be a huge shame as their hybrids are part of a really sensible solution and of course batteries are far from environmentally friendly. This whole regulation needs to be cancelled and let the market decide.

At least the Chinese makers understand that EVs should be cheap and simple. All the little commuter cars should be 200mi range EVs. Basic features, CarPlay interface. That’s how you reduce emissions. Leave the Luxury space for hybrids and ICE.

I think to some extent, legacy car makers have been resting on their laurels. They only now seem to have woken up to the existential threat that Chinese car manufacturers represent. It's probably too late now. Prospects for European (and probably US) automotive manufacturing don't look that great in the coming years.

Audi has announced that from 2026 it will only sell new electric cars and from 2033 they will only sell electric new and used. All car makers need to make a profit and if the general public do not buy their profucts they will go out of business. Can Audi survive?

The failure of German car makers to make a good EV doesn't mean its a lost cause. The VW ID has been a sales flop because its a poor product, its the VW 411 instead of the Golf. The BMW love is strong for you and the fat chick new M5 was a test i can't buy into 💕. Maybe they should fail as this idea you manipulate a market, be that EV or for a bad local car like Holden only prolongs it.

BOYCOTT ALL EV'S...and vote with your wallet. You'll soon be buying throwaway cars that are being leased and tossed away after two years which is worst for the environment... and the increasing entry price will ensure you won't be able to lease one either. Get a good ICE car that will serve you well for at least 10 years under good maintenance.

Why should I? If I can get a used Taycan for the price of a Golf then why buy a ICE car that will deprecate too? You have to understand that most people don't care about the car market and most car purchases are motivated by women. Just look at how many SUVs are on the road and no "enthusiast" car hack has said go for a RAV4 over a 330d? Least of all these two. I love having a hybrid or EV for all of the sub 30 minute journeys, anything longer I take a silly car, in fact it's made my ICE cars more extreme.

@@fraserwright9482 lol i daily a rav4 and have a supra for the weekends... i don't care if people want to buy evs but the demand is literally being fictitiously manufactured before our eyes whether its the "clean holier than thou" initial marketing scheme or the shady politics and gov incentives. also i don't know what taycan you can buy for the price of a golf lol where i live the cheapest used taycan is still 70% more expensive than the top of the line Golf R

Have a look on Pistonheads/Autocar you can get a used Taycan for £40-50k and a Golf R for the same money? There are always incentives, fuel usage, emissions, safety, insurance, imported cars Vs local manufacturers which are all politically driven.
