Title: How Curly Cuts Destroyed My Hair: My Journey to the Big Chop
Description:
In this heartfelt video, I share my personal hair journey and how curly cuts led to the devastating state of my once luscious curls, ultimately forcing me to undergo the big chop.
Having embraced my natural curls for years, I was excited to try a professional curly cut to enhance my natural texture and achieve a more defined, beautiful look. Unfortunately, what I expected to be a positive experience turned into a nightmare that left my hair damaged and unmanageable.
I recount the moment I walked into the salon with excitement and hope, only to leave feeling disheartened and betrayed by the outcome.
I take you through the challenges I faced in trying to salvage my curls post-cut. The damage caused by improper cutting techniques resulted in frizz, breakage, and an inability to style my hair effectively. Despite trying various remedies and products, my hair only worsened, pushing me to make the difficult decision to go for the big chop.
Throughout the video, I offer tips and lessons I've learned along the way, sharing how I discovered the right products and techniques to nurture my new short hair and encourage healthier regrowth.
My big chop marked a fresh start, and I now embrace my short, natural curls with newfound confidence. I share my joy in learning to love and care for my hair once more, finding empowerment in embracing my natural beauty.
Join me on this emotional journey as I share my experiences, offer advice on avoiding curly cut disasters, and celebrate the resilience and beauty of natural curls. If you're facing a similar situation or want to learn more about curly hair care, this video is a must-watch.

It's astounding that your stylist had told you that the ends didn't matter as long as your hair was healthy. If the ends aren't healthy, the hair won't be either! Thank goodness for your mom for seeing and pointing out the issue❤

After my mother cut my ends I couldn’t tell her anything about a curly specialist. My hair grew out very fast after her big chop. Unfortunately at the time I didn’t know much about loose natural hair. I thought it went against the rule of getting your ends cut every few months. I had locs before I became a loose natural girlie. But yes!!!! Thank you to my mom for saving me.

I just did the same thing this week. I’ve been getting curly cuts for years. No oils and butters etc. I noticed that when detangling my hair it was harder to do. I was losing a lot of hair on my wash days. My was and go wasn’t lasting as long. Even when I got my last curly cut in mid July she noticed fairy knots. I blew my own hair out. I cut at least an inch or more off from my crown and a couple inches on my right side. I was upset because my ends should not have been that bad 2 weeks after a cut. That’s the main reason for a cut.

Do you think it’s the curly cut itself or the stylist who is performing the cut?

I learned the hard way too. Trims must be done on at least blown out hair. It doesn’t need to be bone straight but you’re must be blown out to see the splits.

I've never had a curly cut, but from what I've seen I think it is wise to blow out the hair once in a while to see if it is working for you. I've seen a couple of ladies blowout their hair and their ends were even and doing fine, and I've seen some blowout their hair, and the ends look like yours.

I love my stylist. He listens to what I say and helps me to manage my hair when I'm at home. I haven't bleached all of my hair because I know my hair is already dry. I have bleached highlights instead. My stylist did them and when I was having some breakage he recommended using Olaplex every week. I put it in my deep conditioner. My stylist is an Aveda creative director and works with a team of 4/5 under him and teaches stylists also. He's also got curly ethnic hair so he has the knowledge of what to do to my hair so it doesn't get compromised too much. He can cut curly or straight and he asks you what shape you want. Sure he can't slay like a black stylist but at this stage all I want is healthy hair on my head. I can get anyone to do a style but not everyone knows how to keep my hair healthy.

Hey Sis, great video! I agree with you and I’m on a similar journey. My ends were chewed up and split up after getting curly cuts for a full year! There’s, I have decided to only get cuts done on blown out hair for the next year. Well actually, I’m sure it’ll only be getting blown out cuts moving forward but I never say never. 😅 I’m due for my 2nd blown out trim and hair assessment tomorrow and I’m praying my hair is better since my last appointment on May 1st🙏🏽. Thanks again for your video and for speaking up! You’re not alone and I’ve been documenting everything too on my platform‼️♥️💯

Hey Sis, I watched your video and Rosie video as well. I had no idea you two were receiving backlash for speaking up about curly cuts. I figured out curly cuts wasn’t for me but I didn’t think to speak up on it. I’m happy I came across you two videos. It wouldn’t be right for me to post about my hair and not include what I discovered. I also went back to I Am Black Girls Curls and I see the reference about their being only 7 certified Cut It Kinky stylist. That definitely wasn’t there before. I think they are back peddling and still trying to cover everything up. I hope your hair is healthy and you get back to your waist length hair.

Hey- I did a video on this too a little while ago as I have been having my hair cuts done on blown out hair for years then went to a curly hair stylist and made the complete wrong move. I found the cut to not target all of the split ends and was VERY uneven in length. I have since been to another curly stylist who was better, but I still experienced the same issue with them not getting all of the ends trimmed and unevenness. I now currently get it done on blown out hair but again the shape when curly is not as good as it would be if i went to the second stylist i visited! So annoying!

Thank you so much for your comment. I will definitely be checking out your video. At this point I would only get a curly cut for the shape. A stylist can be amazing but cutting the hair curly to address all of the spilt ends is very difficult.

I too thought that getting curly cuts was taking care of my ends but was shocked when I found out otherwise! I hope you can get your hair back to a healthy condition, I know for me personally I will have to cut another 3 inches at least to get to a healthy place! So far I have removed over 5 inches in the matter of 6 months!

I only wear it in a wash and go. I have done an Afro, mini twist (my own hair), and various other styles but it’s with my hair in its natural state. I prefer my hair curly than straight.
@mrparts
@mrparts 11 ай бұрын
You color and straighten your hair. That’s what causes the damage that causes split fried ends, not the haircut. Curly cuts are by definition uneven. What usually happens is the client gets a curly cut, then they get bored of wearing it curly all the time and try to straighten it using heat tools. Since the hair is uneven, the frizzy ends of straightened hair are more noticeable and the client applies more heat in a longer section of the hair, trying to tame all those uneven frizzy hairs, causing more heat and mechanical damage. Client comes back 5 months later for another cut and now a much longer section of the hair is damaged, so the cut chops even more length …. and this process continues until the client loses a lot of length and complains.. in summary, only get a curly cut if you don’t straighten or damage your hair with chemicals or heat.
@SimplyTamz
@SimplyTamz 11 ай бұрын
I don’t know what clients you’re referring to as a stylist but that scenario does not apply to me. I only wore my hair curly at that time and rarely in braids. The color that you’re seeing in the picture was done by my curly specialist at the time who is licensed. I’ve never complained about unevenness and I don’t even own a flat iron. Again, I can tell maybe you’re a stylist and trying to minimize my own personal experience but I am not one of your clients or client that you’re referring to. It’s okay if something didn’t work for my hair. I am blessed that I did choose to wear braids so I would have ended up with a fade due to the state my hair was in.
@mrparts
@mrparts 11 ай бұрын
@@SimplyTamz I don’t minimize your experience. I’m just saying what is a typical scenario due to lack of understanding of the long term implications of a curly cut. Hair that is very fragile, for whatever reasons, ( genetics, use of chemicals, heat, mechanical , etc ) shouldn’t be cut uneven if your main priority is “no damage”. If you cut it uneven and want to preserve length then you have to learn to live with damage and use products to mask/hide/repair the damage until the hair grows out so you can cut the damaged ends without losing length. Ultimately it’s a balance of how fast your hair grows, what’s important, and how much time you want to invest in your hair.
@SimplyTamz
@SimplyTamz 11 ай бұрын
@@mrparts I was never told at the time by my curly specialist that my hair is fragile even after she color treated it. I always asked each the status of my hair each visit and was told my hair is healthy. Genetically my hair is thinner at the top. So I am prone to fairy knots. With the stylist I am working with now we are blowing the hair out and cutting my ends to avoid any issues. My regimen of how often I trim and cut will increase as well.

Are you serious? You are literally damaging, stripping your hair EVERY TIME YOU DYE YOUR HAIR. BLOW IT OUT. Your dye is killing your hair. Curly cuts work fine if done right. Dying, blow drying, straightening makes your LOOK good but none of it is good for hair
@SimplyTamz
@SimplyTamz Жыл бұрын
Yes, I am serious. At that time my stylist was the one to color treat my hair to ensure the hair maintains its health. Heat does not kill the hair unless it is done improperly and the same thing goes for color. If you watched any of my other videos you would see that I don’t use bleach. I use developer and I most definitely keep my hair hydrated. I am happy that curly cuts alone works for you but that just simply wasn’t my experience. Thanks for watching. P.S. Suggesting that blow drying my hair and dying it killed my hair is misinformation and wildy presumptuous. As you continue to browse KZbin, I hope you don’t do the same on other people videos who have also came out and shared that curly cuts do not work for them.

Heat damages the hair. That’s a fact. You’re heating it to change its physical structure. This is not a damage free process.. heating hair eventually breaks the bonds. and you get limp straight ends that are dead and don’t curl anymore.
