TWO dachshunds own me...they are true to their breed traits...they are BARKERS, chewers, and diggers...not just diggers, they are EXCAVATORS!!! Need landscaping? Dachshunds are for you!!! They are snugglers and VERY loyal.

Howling and barking can be limited with certain training. Ask me and I will explain how. But as for chasing and barking along fence line at loud trucks and motorbikes .. I lost on what to do. He seems to find them most offensive.

I found a dachshund mix puppy in a parking lot and she was a real gift for me and my famale chow chow. My chow was much happier with a companion dog and it was like her baby, which was good since she was fixed. Gracie's legs had twice the length of purebred doxie legs, had no back trouble and lived for 17 years.

Totally disagree with your statement above, however, I can understand and acknowledge your point of view. They can be very difficult to train properly and do require some specific care at times, just like ANY other breed. As any RESPONSIBLE companion and care taker should prepare themselves before choosing a breed with some earnest research and education. It doesn’t take much to properly care for a Doxie. They are great companion dogs/performance hounds that with a minimal amount of education can be a lifelong, life changing, little friend that is fiercely loyal and loving to their “pack/family/widow/whatever. They do great with children too, however, it’s imperative to teach the children to not press on the dogs back, or pickup without being shown how, that’s the only time Doxies might defend themselves as they few they are in danger. My experience has been after a good sniff and lick they keep a safe distance from very small children, and will protect them too if needed. Anyway, just my two bits.

@@tjtrent2351 with dachshunds being prone to back issues, dental hygiene problems, and stubbornness, I would say they aren't the best for first time dog owners. On my 6th dachshund, and they definitely require more work than other breeds. Not to say a first time dog owner shouldn't get one though. Just a bit more work.

@@lvlikeyV Totally understand and agree to a point with you. I also believe a lot of that comes from poor breeding and breeders. I’m not a fan of amateur home breeding, and certainly not puppy mills, it seems to add to the whole “inherently bad back, teeth, debate” which can affect any breed I’d imagine. Am I just a regular guy who loves his doxies, yeah, I don’t have peer reviewed research and published journal articles to back my statements up, therefor opinion, but based off many years experience. Take care and good vibes. Interesting to think about anyway, eh?

PLEASE know what you’re getting into if you decide to own a dachshund. You must train them to not jump up or down furniture, prevent them from walking on stairs, and don’t let them roughhouse with larger dogs, and dachshunds tend to be absolutely fearless among other dogs. They are a wonderful breed with lots of love to give, but they can also break your heart when a back injury leads them to an early grave.

Not a good dog for first time owner. As someone who has owned several. You need to be extremely patient and persistent. They need a lot of room to play and plenty of walks to keep them mentally simulated. Also they also need to be taken care of to ensure they don't have back problems later in life. This isn't discouragement to get one but to think about your ability to commit time and effort.

@@martyslays3775 definitely not, i’ve known many people who’ve owned this breed who picked them up correctly or let them jump off high places like “any other dog” cause they’re stupid and their dog iq is a 3 and have injured and paralyzed them. of course they don’t phrase it as “we did this” it’s always “oh he jumped off the bed and tore his hind leg” or some other random pop up of an injury. just like with a new baby you need to baby proof a house, with dogs like this, you need be aware of how you carry and let them navigate the world. so not good for most first time dog owners, as they are usually the stupidest and that’s their first pet in general

I have had 5 dachshunds. They are quirky, loud and bossy but they will draw out the best in you and you’ll love every minute of it. They will fill your home with the pitter patter of little paws and have you cracking up with their antics. My only caution about dachshunds is an alpha can be demanding and all of them will compete for your attention. Sometimes, the fur can fly if you’re not on top of them. I would recommend at least two, so they can keep each other company while you’re out.

My first dog was a doxie called Sadie- she just passed recently after 14 years of being best friends. She was very hard to train for a first time dog, and she was super stubborn to boot! But they are fiercely loyal. I can say my Sadie did well with cats, dogs, and children while raised around them from the time she was a baby. (However, she was not always fond of strange adults and took time to check them out before feeling safe and calm). Keep in mind this is not the case for every dachshund. They need a lot of attention, and training to avoid anxious attachment or seeking out revenge(yes, they will hold a grudge sometimes like some dogs will but it’s nothing horrible, kind of funny to an extent). They NEED regular dental cleaning/tooth brushing, food scheduled and healthy to help them stay trim and plenty of ramps to avoid back issues. They will get set in their ways but at the end of the day if you read up on training and their personality to make sure it fits your lifestyle - they are amazing companions. My dox was lucky enough to only require yearly checkups until her final year of life when she developed kidney disease/failure. She also needed a few deep dental cleanings/a tooth removal in her life due to the long snoot which can sometimes be difficult to keep hygienic. ❤ They will pick one person to love the most and dedicate their lives to them, their personalities are unmatched. Stay informed, do your research and good luck :) Edit: not always great for apartments as they bark a lot too

He ruptured 2 disks. He had emergency surgery but his prognosis doesn't look good. Most likely he will be paralyzed in his back legs and incontinent. I have to express his bladder 4-6 times a day. I have raised 2 of these dogs, and they are not for first time dog owners. They are very loyal and can even have jealous behaviors. Besides from the back issue they can have, my last one had developed kidney disease and to keep her around longer was extraordinarily expensive from test to diet. These dogs also suffer from separation anxiety. Patience is must and good behavior techniques are keen. It took some time but they are trainable. Mine never barked just to bark, only when there were new people around she did not know. They require a lot of attention. They are very good dogs but you need to know and research, as well as be prepared for what lies ahead and DO NOT give up on them.

dachshund are my favorite dogs. My grandmother gave me my first one when I was five, which I had until I was 19. When I got out of the military, I got another one and she has been the best dog ever. I’ve been a miserable bastard since I got out of the military, she’s the only thing that really makes me happy. Every time I think of her or see her she makes me smile. I really worry about what’s going to happen to me when something happens to her. If you get a dachshund, be careful with their backs. Don’t let them get fat, have them avoid stairs , and always support their backs if you have to pick them up. I even tell the people at the vet’s to support her back when they pick her up. It aggravates the hell out of me when I see the vet pick her up by the rib cage. Especially since she’s a little overweight, that could easily tweak her back. It seems like vets would know that. I’ve been especially cautious with her back because my first dachshund had back issues and it’s so stressful to see them suffer.

The back issues aren't really too big a deal if you teach them to not jump on furniture, but dachshunds are not good for apartments. They need exercise and tons of walks. They run a lot. Frankie Dashund Beagle and he is literally the best dog our family has ever adopted. He is so good with our children. He is loyal and he is definitely a little rocket times. He’s the sweetest thing you’ll ever meet. Not a mean bone in his body unless he senses you which is rare.

I love my mini dauschund to death but they are not first time dogs. They are basically toddlers and super stubborn. They have crazy separation anxiety and I would recommend them if you are able to have someone with them at all times. You will pick up and put them down to go up most heights as their backs can have many issues. You cant let them jump from hardly any height or leave them alone . You have to exercise them alot cause of they get fat or or even a little overweight it can cause big issues. The stubbornness is unlike most dogs you are going to have to have patients of a saint. Now if you still want one they are so cute and incredibly loyal. Slinky(my dach) is a great friend and member of our family. He snuggles and spoons lol . The love slinky has is mind blowing. Even if your careful accidents can happen. When I got ours on the third day as a puppy he squirmed out as I was putting him down and had a small injury. They are stressful but the love and loyalty cant be understated. Also good luck finding one to adopt and not buy from a breeder. Our slinky is 10 and brought many many moments of joy and happiness. Just make sure your ready and do research, maybe try a corgi they may be a little less difficult and just as cute.

My sister’s dachshund has severe seizures which are also common to the breed apparently. They are also hard to train, they know what you want but they will just not do it. Also agreed to what everyone else is saying about then taking all the space in the bed somehow and they bark at everythinggggggg forever. Look i love them, but i would never get one. Golden retrievers are so popular because they have that need to please and obey. They learn super fast. And yes i have a goldendoodle and he’s perfect in every way 😂
@JH-lo9ut
@JH-lo9ut Жыл бұрын
I don't think seizures are very common for Dachshunds. Well-bred Dachshunds are generally healthy and have a long life-span if they can avoid back injury and obesity. But dogs of any breed will get health problems if they suffer inbreeding. This means, if the parent dogs are too closely related, the chance of the pups carrying genetic disease is increased. If you get your dog from a puppy farm, it is very likely that the parents are first cousins or even more closely related and that this pattern has been repeated over several generations. If a dog has very "exotic" features like unique coat coloring or eye coloring, extremely small or large for it's breed standard, that is a sign that this dog may be the result of excessive inbreeding, and that they are likely carriers of genetic diseases.

3 months with our first time dachshund was like having a new baby in the house. Can't sleep on his own, he need a human besides him or see human always. Have separation anxiety somehow. Very stuborn, barks a lot, chewer, zoomer and a menance. How can someone so tiny can bring so much havoc.. Fast forward now 2 years old and the most adorable little buddy, loves to snuggle, loves to play and very loyal although still stuborn we love him so much.

I just got a dachshund x jack russel, although you cant tell hes half jack russel. He looks just like his purebred papa. Its actually my first dog ive ever owned myself as an adult. But as someone who has back problems im acutely aware of the precautions you need to take to look after thier spines. We make sure to fully support him when we pick him up and have ramps for the bed and couch coming. I cant live in a place with stairs so these guys are a good fit. Hes a sweet cuddly silly sausage and i am 100% that dog parent who will lecture you for encouraging them to jump onto or off of things. I may have doomed myself by getting a cross-breed of two highly intelligent breeds 😅, but so far so good.

I agree. Two dachshunds own us. I made a vinyl for my van that says “my wieners are sassholes”. They’re sassy but in a good way. We’ve had a lot of different breeds and our dachshunds are the most in tune with us and are great with our autistic children.

Reading these comments, I'm surprised. I've never owned or even seen a dachsund in real life, but they always had the kindest eyes and I've only seen recordings of them on their best behavior (like this video). Are they really that crazy? They seem so innocent! 😂

Yeah, except they're stubborn, bred for hunting, natural diggers, excitable and energetic and do better with a companion and space outside...oh and they jump on everything, are vocal and very attached to their chosen person to the point where seperation anxiety can be a risk...I wouldn't say they're a great "easy" first time pet. They're wonderful, I love them and grew up around 6. But ...not sure I agree with "easy".

I have one. The Ivdd surgery cost me about $6000. So if you're financially challenged, I can't recommend it. Otherwise, they're a GREAT breed. They're loyal, playful, clever and loves to cuddle still. She is "sassy" and definitely has a big attitude. ❤️

Mini dachshund was my first dog. They're the most stubborn dog breed I've been around because they have very strong instincts from being a hunting dog. I wouldn't want to own any other dog breed though. I prefer a short haired red or a black and tan dachshund. My red dachshund could climb trees like a damn monkey and could jump on top of short fences and launch itself into the air like it was superman.

Vet tech here, this is terrible advice!! Dachshunds, despite popular belief, aren't the best apartment dogs. They can be, but usually, they aren't 😭

They need at least 30 minutes of good running exercise a day to keep their back muscles strong and avoid IVD... That’s what the most recent studies have shown. They’re not apartment dogs! Our girl gets herself into trouble when she hasn’t gotten her exercise 🙊. They need to expend the energy.

Dachshunds are amazing--but you need to be consistent and gently firm. Show respect to get respect. Also, the long-haired ones are the gentlest and most malleable on average, so maybe go for those. Finally, the need for being careful of their backs canNOT be overstated.

My long haired has occassional mild seizures. Hes now 5+ years. Doesn't appear to be much of a problem to him.. he's highly intelligent. Was told it's a genetic fault. They do need toe/pad hair trimming .. also so their brakes pads work for stopping, and too long a tail can be very dangerous if caught in an object or wheel.

There are no good “first time dogs” every family and person wants a different thing in a dog. Someone might want a jogging partner. A Dalmatian would probably suit their life style. Someone may want a dog to cuddle with and hang out on the couch all day with. A Pomeranian might fit their life style. So do your research and think about what you want in a dog BEFORE making the decision to take another, living, breathing, thing into your house! ❤
