You failed to mention the biggest problem with dog parks. There are a lot of clueless people out there with dogs who are reactive or playground bullies, or even just rude or with poor social skills. A nice, well-socialised dog can get traumatized by a dog whose owner does not intervene or even pay attention. Then you have a reactive dog. Be ready to leave the park if the other humans are not doing the right things

I've stepped in and controlled other people's dogs at the dog park in order to protect my own dog, it's ridiculous that people don't know when to intervene.

You are so right. I had a perfectly lovely Border Collie who loved the dog park, until he got bitten, and more than once. Now he is reactive toward any dog who he feels is a threat to me. Now I need a professional trainer to help me undo the damage. No more dog parks for me.

+Susan DeFelice We dog trainers get clients this way regularly, much to our sadness. If you can do doggie play dates with known dogs instead I always recommend that. If you can't socialize your dog any other way, you can always watch the dog park for especially well-behaved dogs, find out who their human is, and see if you can arrange a play date. A traumatized dog is no small thing to fix, and they may never be quite the same as before. Sad to see a happy go lucky pup lose their innocence.

William Davidson depends on your dog's age and temperament as well as the dogs in the park at the time. I've seen small dogs, including my Shiba who's fairly small herself, get along great with bigger dogs and others such as a Yorkie continually go after a Rottweiler to instigate a fight (the Rottie had some great patience and training luckily enough, didn't even take his eyes off his owner who was playing fetch with him! Rare knowledgeable owner there). Best advice would be, wait until your dog is about 8 months or older for a dog park, socialize in small groups first, make sure your dog is spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations! if you keep an eye on your dog and the actions of other dogs you should have no worries.

my puppy went to the dog park for the 2nd time today ... she was great the first time, playing with a lot of different dogs... today 3 pitbulls ran up on her and started attacking her... owner no where to be found, so i had to run in and grab as she was getting pulled from different angles.. she poo'd all over herself and the other dogs and the owner came up after and said "im sorry they dont know how to play.." ... just confused, but def last time taking her there. I feel so bad for her.

you should also mention to NEVER place a shock collar on your dog and then head to the dog park. So so many people bring their dogs with shock collars and zap them every time they jump on someone, get too rowdy with another dog, or give another dog a warning (lip curl, growl, etc). This is super dangerous because the dog will likely associate the shock with the other dog or person, not the unwanted behavior. My dog got bit after the owner shocked her dog for "not sharing" his ball. Even after I told her to stop.

Jennifer Sara To start off with dogs like that, It is VERY important to first do one on one meets in a controlled environment (not in your yard, Since that is your dogs territory and it may cause for failure, And the same goes for their yard. Meet in a secluded area where there isn’t much traffic and or startling noises etc) and have them meet side to side so they can greet themselves and properly sniff each other. DO NOT greet them face to face as this will cause tension and inevitably put them into a closed in, Battle mode. Side by side, And simply just go for a stroll with them for about 10-20 minutes before allowing them to go off leash and have some fun. Be very attentive to their body language when your initially begin walking side by side, You will see whether or not you can have them off leash during the first meet, Or if you need to have several meet and greets if you don’t feel too confident in the body language he is displaying. Keep in mind, If you are at ease and remain calm and confident, It will help him be able to focus more on his own being rather than having to focus on himself, As well as you. 😊 It takes effort and consistency! Hope this helps! Make sure you talk to your friend first and meet their dog before introducing yours to them. Come home with their dogs smell on you often so yours will recognize it right away when he meets their dog.

My dog THRIVES at the dog park, I could never exercise him that much on my own because he will run and run. However, I have left with the thought “we are never returning “ to the dog park in our area. If I go to the dog park now, I drive over a 1/2 hour to a dog park in a nice area with great dogs. We only go once or twice a month but my dog is his happiest when he is there.

Trainer here. Buy a flirt pole, teach him fetch, teach him to run while you're cycling (trickier than you'd might think). I hate dog parks, it's a poor substitute for real exercise and it does nothing for the relationship between you and your canine. My dog rather plays with me, because I'm his favourite toy, than with dogs. And he is non reactive towards other dogs and humans, and that's all the dog needs. And if you still can't exercise your dog enough, then you got the wrong dog. Get a nice small poodle, a whippet, greyhound, something you can control and manage.

Love your work Zak you are awesome. My Belgian Mailinois has never seen a dog park and never will. She's a Schutzhund level 3 and her dog socialization was done in small groups with human oversight only feet away. She's great with other dogs 99.999% of the time - until she's not. She's a dog, not a robot and while she trained to an almost frightening level of obedience to my voice and hand signals I have to realize that behind those eyes is a brain that I do not control. Any dog faced with a threat will likely go into fight mode and it's never pretty. Dog parks are also a cesspool of disease as you have no idea what the vaccination status of the other dogs or what diseases they have.

Same with my male border collie. He's always with me and never goes for an unknown dog. But when someone 'mine is unleashed and friedly male' runs into his face or a butt with no permission - he snaps. If the dog 1m away and doesn't bother him he's more than fine. I feel your pain. It's probably just frustration (especially Jacks). I rescued two nervous Jacks five months ago. Ted in particular was bold enough to approach other dogs but had no idea what to do when he got there, would then panic and nail the other dog without hesitation. It was scary as he was so committed in that moment. I had to stop him meeting any unknown dogs. He now meets most dogs off leash calmly, takes his time to approach (knows his threshold) and avoids if he's not sure. Occasionally he'll even try and engage a new dog to play if he's in the comfortable and there's good chemistry. Something I find really helpful is to reward the dog for sniffing other dog's scent marks. So we're walking down a street where lots of other dogs have marked on lamp posts and walls and things. When Ted stops to sniff these patches I pay him (feed treats). No marker (click/'yes'). Just feed, feed, feed and move on. I also do a lot of engagement work with him to be able to keep his focus on me when I need it (he's about to freak out). Once I got a handle on his reactivity, mainly by teaching impulse control and patience, I started with very brief encounters with other dogs with Ted on the lead. By brief I mean; see dog, walk towards dog (not directly but to the side), sniff dog, move on, click and treat as soon as Ted moves to leave. No time for anything to kick off. Slowly increase duration as Ted gets a handle on himself, always moving on whilst things are calm and happy. Of course we had a couple of incidents in the early stages, which I think actually helped as the moment things got heated we got out of there quick, in a controlled way. I was ready, had an exit and was positioned so that I could walk directly away with Ted in tow. I'd say 'ok, let's go' and dash away. I'd then give him a moment to calm down and let it all sink in and praise him if he coped well. Either way I act is if it's just part of life and no big deal, just get out of there ! I seem to have taught him a better coping mechanism when he's nervous or scared than going in for the kill and nailing the other dog. He's one of those rescues that was simply clueless about being a dog. Now he's been provided with the right information, he MUCH prefers his new skills over his old broken behaviours. It's fairly typical of Jack Russells to love their humans but not be too happy with dogs. They're usually highly motivated to work so training is a breeze. Changing some behaviours however can be a challenge (and a half). They can be willfull and cocky at times and will take the piss given any opportunity. Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

If you want to start training a deaf dog, there are a few pre-requirements that are needed: 1. You must already have a trust relationship with the dog. 2. Figure out how to reward good behavior. The first thing the dog has to learn (even more so than with 'regular' dogs) is that is need to keep it's attention on you. Reward him/her in different ways if (s)he is facing you. When the dogs understands that it needs to keep facing you, you can start with the very basic dog training like learning how to sit/stand and lie down. This isn't that different that with a regular dog, but often you need to be more patient. And I mean really patient as it is much harder for a deaf dog to figure out what you want him to do. Remember to keep you hands, face and body as steady as possible as you're body language will eventually be the thing dog starts to associate with a (non-verbale) command. I do some heelwork to music (doggy dance) with my dog and most basic command are given with body posture. I only use verbal command when the dog is not facing me. But before the dog learns the body gestures, it learns the verbal commands as this makes it easier to indicate the wanted behavior. When the same command is given in a lot of different context, it learns what are the common gestures and words. As you can't teach the dog verbal commands, you need to give gestures in a very controlled and relaxed (peaceful) environment. Before you start training, make sure the dog hasn't build up energy and the training should always start with some playing. Get a cushion and sit on it. The best place would be along the wall with you're back facing the wall. The cushion should be placed always at the same spot. When people sit, they usually give off less gestures that when they're standing or keeled down. In the latter you need to remain you're balance and this can cause that you move you're arms a little bit different. The more consistent you are when teaching the gestures, the easier it is for the dog. Only when you can give gestures for the basic commands like sit, (lie) down and (stand) up, you can try giving them when you're standing, but only the in the same room where you also sit on the cushion. If the dog doesn't react on the gesture while standing, just sit again on the cushion and give the command from the ground so you end the session in a positive setting. After the session you should also do some activity with the dog regardless of the outcome of the session. Most owners a simply going too fast with the training. Repetition is key. Only move on to a new command when the commands it should know are performed correctly for 90+% of the time. The most difficult command to teach a deaf dog is 'here'. We usually use fist-ed hand with a stretched index finger pointing down while at the same time lowering the hand a few inches. But this only works if the dogs keeps it focus on you. If you have trouble with learning the dog some of the basic commands, don't be afraid to get some help and visit a few local dog schools for additional information. Schools that offer also heelwork to music or workdog training usually have more experience as they normally require dog trainers to be certified. Because you and the dog should form a team and proper communication is key. Good dog trainers don't only train the dog, but also the owner/handler!

Unfortunately, my shih tzu can't stand doggie parks. We tried taking her a few times, first when there was one dog there with who she is familiar with - she just doesn't like it. She was more focused on leaving than playing or exploring after one circle around the park and about 1-2 minutes. When we took her to a bigger dog park where a lot more dogs are visiting every day, she started drooling massively and wouldn't want to play with any other dogs (there were two other in a pretty big park), she only wanted to leave and be with us, so we left. We tried 2-3 times and gave it up completely. I guess the smell of the dog parks (which we can't smell, but they can) scares her or something. She is socialised from the earliest age, but she is always very picky on the dogs she likes. There are rare ones with which she "clicked" from the start. One of the exceptions was a doberman named Jinx who was about 5 times bigger than she way. Just runs away from most others or just ignores them. Also, she growls and barks neighbour's husky. The only dog she ever growled at, and they never even met properly, just when walking by. on my We got a special snowflake I guess. :)

I have not found anything more perfect for my dog than dog parks. She is a 2-year-old, 52-pound rescue dog, sturdy but lean & athletic pit/Jack Russel mix named Holland. She goes there every day, sometimes twice a day, and we’ve been going for over a year. Yes, there are altercations, but she knows how to handle them now. Most of the time she’s sitting in front of me playing with a ball when they happen. Yes, there are ignorant people, but I have learned the signs. I always say that dog parks are the public school of dog socialization. Not every dog mine comes across on the street will be well-behaved. Holland is unfazed by a poorly behaved dog because she’s seen them multiple times and wants nothing to do with them. She’ll fight back only enough to get out of a situation, but is rarely even involved unless she just happens to be super close and another dog friend is involved. Does your dog know the difference between rough play and attack? Does she know how hard to bite so as just to mouth play & romp with another dog her pace and not to break skin? Does she understand the language of not just the typical dog, but also the signals of puppies, small dogs, big dogs, older dogs, blind and deaf dogs? Mine does, and I’m damn proud of my good girl. Just yesterday this corgi was dying to play with her and I swear I heard her groan and saw her roll her eyes, but regardless she got on her back for a fair fight and let him think he was really a threat, pawing and mouthing at her while she made a half-ass punching motion with her paws, like someone pretending to let a toddler win a wrestle 😂😂😂 But you know what? Just like I’d want my kid to kick an attacker in the nuts, I don’t mind if my dog tells another dog off verbally or with a pounce forward physically, or even really fight back if she needs to. Because I am an attentive dog owner, aside from maybe her first two months, in our entire dog park experience Holland has only ever had to give warnings and has never once instigated a fight (as she was learning, she ended up doing so unintentionally while she figured out how to play). Granted, my dog is tough. I call her my “Uber-feminist” because she’s so quick to tell a humper off 😂 I would consider her the ideal dog park personality. Learn your dog, and learn your dog park to find out if it’s right for you.

Unfortunately, older dogs can take a new dog as a threat if he won't be introduced slowly and properly to every. If a group of dog's are good together doesn't matter that they will accept someone new easily. Even if you have the most friendly dog, if he goes to the dog too fast for a play, it could end up badly...

So I’m guessing my dog was under socialized as puppy before we got her and she is bad with people and other dog most of the time (barks from a distance and would lunge if we let her close enough on walks). I couldn’t have someone over and them even pet her. But yet at a dog park, she is a totally different dog and plays perfect with other dogs, isn’t at all aggressive and loves all people and strangers. Does anyone know why this may be or what can be done to transfer her behavior inside the dog park to outside the dog park? Any comments or links to info is appreciated!

Just received your book in the mail yesterday! I have a question. Anyone who wants to answer, feel free. I have a Shar-Pei/APBT mix puppy. Well, she's about 9 months now. Very happy-go-lucky and friendly, sweet. She's a very loud barker/growler when it comes to play time. It puts other dogs off who don't know her. What can I do to keep her from barking so much while she's playing/trying to play? She's also a very dominate player... I've been considering taking her somewhere that I can work with professionals on socializing her better. Any advice?

When I get a Rottweiler i'm going to socialize it to situations like kids pulling on ears and barking dogs. What concerns me is the people who are clueless to there reacting dogs at the dog park, I don't want him to be traumatized if some random dog comes up and tries to dominate him.

I bring my dog to the dog park, he is a 5 month old Doberman. When he is confronted by other dogs he is fine. However when a dog starts chasing him he acts like the dog is killing him. He whines and howls like a crying child. Generally the other dogs aren’t being overly aggressive. I’m not sure how to respond. Should I protect him or should I let him fend for himself? Thanks for your help.

My dog is very calm with other dogs and is extremely obedient, so we thought that the dog park was a good idea. We went 3 times, he was attacked twice (my dog did reacted) and now he started to pull when we find other dogs on our walks. Maybe isn't such a good idea after all, or at least we shouldn't go so frequently. Both dogs that attacked my dog had already got in trouble with other dogs, but the owners thought it was okay just because they were small dogs (beagle and dachshund). I know that if my dog reacted (a border collie) we would be the guilty one. Thank you for the video!

My dog Thunder (1 1/2 year old Male Border Collie) Has some issues with other dogs. He will not respond to anything if he sees another dog on a walk and will constantly lunge toward them. When any dogs get close to him, he does not respond well, and snaps at them. I have another dog, Mona, who is Thunder's best friend, and he gets along with only a few other dogs. How can I get him to the point where he will play and interact positively with other dogs?

I have a similar issue with my Staffy. She doesn't lunge or bark at other dogs when she sees them, in fact she shows a very polite and friendly interest. But when they meet and the other sniffs past her face, she will snap/snarl at them. When I'm able to work slowly and one on one with another strange dog and it's owner, we are able to get her to the point of playing very well with the other dog/s. I'd love to have her get to the point where she's not so nervous around other dogs she doesn't know well, because when she does start to play, she realizes she loves it and doesn't want to stop! Her initial fear of other strange dogs is hindering her. Any suggestions on helping her through this, anyone?

It’s so important to take into consideration the size of your dog as well, taking a toy dog breed to a park full of large dogs can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

I’m hoping maybe someone can help me with my specific issue so feel free to give me advice! My female staffie is about a year and three months old (we got her at 9-Ish months). Because of the pandemic and her extreme anxiety, we haven’t been able to properly socialize her around other dogs. We recently got to a reasonable level of anxiety with her and now she’s not as hyped and chaotic as she used to be so we think now would be a good time to start socializing her (as soon as we get her spayed). My dog doesn’t hate other dogs. In the few moments where she’s interacted with other dogs, she actually really loves them and gets super excited by them. The issue is that she has a tendency to jump on them playfully and she’s just overall kind of a rude dog (doesn’t give the other dog any space even when they’re uncomfortable and unintentionally puts them in defensive positions). I can tell it’s done mostly out of play and ignorance, but she’s a staffie so I don’t want other people’s dogs to freak out her in a dog park where I would probably have to chase after her and it’s more difficult to control her. She’s a very submissive dog and not the type to bully but again, she’s a staffie and I don’t want other people freaking out about her. Is there any advice you guys could give about introducing her to a dog park? I feel like it would be a good way to desensitize her to other dogs since she’d get more exposure to them, but I also fear for her safety or the safety of other dogs. Walking her on a leash and letting her meet other dogs is borderline impossible because she just gets so excited when she sees another dog. And the pandemic doesn’t really allow me to meet up with other dog owners that I don’t already know and trust.

I have the exact same issue (over excited, super sniffing mode and pulling on leash) with my Black Labrador except that he's 4.5 years old. :p I know I should have known better with socializing him from year 1 but he's still so young! Also, haven't neutered him yet. Wonder if that might have anything to do with his seemingly aggressive /excited behaviour! PLease help on how I could get him be cooler and socialize with other dogs! Really appreciate your feedback! Thanks!

I have an extremely playful greyhound and for them I would recommend going early so there are less dogs and in a FULlY FENCED dog park where you can see every corner of the park. They have paper skin so be very careful and ready to step in. also if you’re hound has a very high prey drive, DON’T TAKE THEM, or if you do make sure there small dog safe. When they se a small dog they see it as a rabbit or squirrel and will kill them.

👍🏻1. Pre- exercise your dog before going to the dog park 2. Never bring dog toys to a dog park. Other dogs can be territorial and cause issues. The dog park is for socializing. Toy play is for at home. 3. No cell phones. Pay attention to your dog and others. 4. Don’t sit if you can stand. Being able to get to action quickly is vital.

we are thinking of taking our puppy to an off leash dog trail. we have been told they need 3 sets of shots first. the puppy has 1 set now but needs 2 more before the vet says she can go or socialize with other dogs. does this sound right ? or possibly overprotective ? month or so between shots, so 4 months old before she can be around other dogs ?

If your puppy has received their first rounds of vaccinations, you don't need to be too paranoid. Plus if you shelter him away from the world until he has all his vaccinations, you will setting him up to fail to be properly socialized. You only have until he's 4 months old to do the vast majority of your socializing. Once the critical socialization window closes, you can't play catch up.

I think it's important to note that most, if not all, of the dogs in the park are unknown to you. There are really no rules or boundaries, and they're strangers. It's kind of like if we dropped a person into a prison recreational yard. Sure, most of the inmates probably aren't going to hurt you, but there are some who will, and you don't know which is which. For example, some people aren't as responsible as you. I've seen dogs with "policing" tendencies, that see other dogs running and playing and feel the need to stop them. This can easily turn into other dogs (that are not yours) getting involved, and fights start. All the while your dog didn't do anything, but is now involved in a fight. That's just one example of the fact that you don't know the other dogs or what they'll do. It's a pretty big risk.

Could you give me some tips, I'm trying to convince my dad that I am responsible enough for a dog, we already have two cocker spaniels and I am looking to get a German Shepard as they have been my favourite dog since I was I child, I am a large build 14 year old so I don't think the size of the dog is a problem for me

I was in the same spot. I'm not zak but I would suggest doing reaseach then get your parents to sit down in front of you and present all that you know about German shepherds, show them that you know how to treat them and you know about some larger dog illnesses like bloat, and that you know how to prevent them. Also it's always good to save up money and go on Kijiji or any website and see if there's any German shepherds for sale in your area. And the last thing that you should do is make a list of everything you'll need for the new dog and show them that you are ready to get a new dog and you will take all the responsibilities. Hope this helps and good luck! :)

The Revolutionary gamer but remember, you won't be able to visit your friends after school for a long time or have time to play games, sport etc. after school if you're spending two hours walking them. also, if you're not fit you will find it hard to walk for a long period of time, and german shepherds typically enjoy high intense activities such as running. maybe lose weight first and then see?

I wish people wouldn't bring aggressive dogs to the dog park. My poor shihpoo got attacked by another dog and got 3 puncture wounds . The owner did nothing to stop his dog and left. He didn't apologize nor offer to help. I had to take my dog to the vet to get her wounds clean and had to get stitches. Please be cautious when your in a dog park. Lots of dog owners aren't responsible and don't pay attention to their dogs. Since then I haven't been able to take her back to a dog park. I'm just to scare of something like that happening again.

I went to the dog park for the first time with my 6 month Golden retriever (male) one dog tried to hump him , almost got in a middle of a fight, kept him on the leash the whole time, I have to say I've been to regular parks also and for some reason owners never seem to respect the leash rule so always supervise your dog Wether he or she is on/off the leash, as for the dog park it is your responsibility to keep an eye on your dog, seriously why would you let your dog off leash though if you know the dog is aggressive, owners are the because problem for rude behavior, my puppy was attacked by a pit bull his age but the owner thankfully jumped in and stopped his dog from yanking my dogs ears even though Hitting his dog I think is wrong but the biggest thing I learned is never let them around rude dogs and do not take your dog to socialize them more than once a week because they will learn bad habits or will get bullied, please have them hang around nice mature dogs if you have a puppy

emily teffer well yes and no. If you're dog is likely to attack others then maybe, but i wouldn't take the dog at all if it does. It is a good idea for safety but if the dog with the muzzle on does get attacked it will have no way to defend itself if the owner can't reach the dog on time or something.

Dogs don't need to interact with other dogs for socialization. The only socialization they need is interactions with the owner. The best advice is advice against dog parks. You can't fully supervise dogs because aggression happens instantaneously and then you have a dog fight you will have to break up.
