Many of you are pointing to the fact that Doughboy died at the end of Boyz N The Hood (which we all know happened). Perhaps you're simply reacting to the title of the video, but please consider giving us the minimal amount of credit that we are well aware that Doughboy died and therefore this video must be asking a deeper question. Whether you want to explore that or not with us is up to you... Yes, Doughboy died, but that hasn't got a thing to do with the plausibility of this theory and the question we're asking. 😊

Loki just changed the time loop for Doughboy. Moms never slapped him. He saw the streets and the pen as a youngster, changed his ways. Ricky runs track while red shirting his freshman year. They go to an HBCU along with Trey. Momma love changes everything!

When both movies came out I was young. I know John Singleton hand pick most of the Actors in all he's movies. Also like to use Actors that the black community wanted to see. An Director of a all Black cast at that tyme didn't have much to work with cuz of Hollywood what Most Movie directors was looking for in the 90's wasn't much color if you wasn't on Drugs or a Killer. John wanted to show the World as a Black Man or Woman in the inter-city and how they are treated around other Races! Not sure what ya'll getting at but I can see what this video is going for. Can go deeper as to seeing Mailk and deja Engagement in love and Basketball. P.S. I never look at the characters like that cuz they was all different thanks for pointing them out. Growning up I saw all of them types in my everyday life!

Till this day I still believe Furious was Doughboy’s dad. The flirting and chemistry with the mom, how even though Furious didn’t agree with what Doughboy was doing he never tried to keep him and Trey apart, and of course the last line; “you still got one brother left man.” Now I know brother is a term used for many things but I think it was a subtle insight as well…

If the mailman would’ve handed the mail to Ricky on his way out the front gate instead of Ricky’s mom, Ricky could’ve still been alive, because he probably would’ve looked through the mail to see if it was anything for him, seen the letter with his test scores, and delayed going to the store at that particular moment, which would’ve thrown off the timing that him & Trey ran into Ferris & his homies in the red car. But that’s all wishful thinking. Damn Rick!

You all did a great job on this analysis. I saw this in the movie theatres in the 90s right before I started college. After watching your analysis, it just occurred to me that Fudge may have been in school for 6 years, not as the person taking a long time to finish his Bachelors Degree, but he could have been finishing a Masters Degree. A standard Bachelors Degree takes about 4 years to complete and a Masters Degree is an additional 2 years. He could have graduated with an MBA, but didn't mention it. Fudge also could be a version of what the Professor was in his early education days. Now I have to watch this movie again for the first time in decades to see what I may have missed. Again, you did a wonderful job on your analysis of this classic film.

Doughboy had more knowledge than Ricky. Ricky was just sliding by because of his popularity of being a high school football star. But Doughboy was reading and knew a lot about life experiences. TBH Higher Learning was way ahead of its time. Singleton told sooo many different stories of adult/child dichotomy. I was working with my stepmom when I was 18 and she always called me a man-child. I slightly understood but being a man-child waved it off. Now being a father with kids in college, I understand. They all make mistakes that lead to the end all mass shooting. Again…..WAY ahead of its time

John Singleton ( RIP) started off as a production assistant/intern on " Do The Right Thing"...he admired Spike Lee...one of the reasons why he probably cast Laurence Fishburne in his movies was because of " School Daze" ...so just like how Spike Lee put Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn( RIP) , Joie Lee, Ossie and Ruby Dee Davis( RIP). ..even Samuel L. Jackson...John Singleton ( RIP) put Regina King in " Boyz N da Hood" , " Poetic Justice " , and " Higher Learning"...Cube, Laurence Fishburne , & Morris Chestnut came back for " Higher Learning " but by the time, John did Babyboy ...everybody had pretty much moved on and became successful or too busy...Tyrese was in " Babyboy" , " 2 Fast 2 Furious " , and " 4 Brothers" because John Singleton believed that he had leading man appeal as a actor.. he felt the same way about 2 Pac...different universes !

As someone commonly referred to as "Dr Ice Cube", these were most certainly 2 of my fav characters since early childhood. (Thaanks to older siblings) Its hard to choose between the 2. I think this is one of the best alternate movie-verse theories around. If doughboi had been fortunate enough to attend college. It may likely have required 6 years to mature and build enough consistency to finish. Think of the tragedies back in South Central that may have forced bro to pause his education. I lost too many friends and fam while in school. In Addition, ya'll are soo right on the "student loans vs safe room and board" situation so many of us have been in. These are almost akin to "John Singleton Caricatures", in different universes where each is a supporting character in different scenarios surrounding his main character (Trey and Malik). Baby Boi is similar, but different in that is more like the same universe as BNTH, but a different time and characters. Great take as always! Maybe Furius is Fudges Father in real life? lol

58:23 after watching this video that seems like a trick question. Now I see more than ever that they are the same person, given a small twist of fate. Doughboy could’ve been told about Frederick Douglas in juvenile detention and given a book about him. Frederick was gangster as hell and Doughboy would have been down with him if given the chance to learn about him. That could’ve been part of his transition . It could also explain why he got stuck at school. Mom wasn’t giving him any constructive criticism. Just a thought.

Letti was sure she could get the job.. and Ruby was dedicated to Convincing Letti that she’d be wasting her time.. both are right in their beliefs due to their differing realities.. For Ruby. She wouldn’t have ever been hired, because she didn’t fit the ‘look’.. Letti wouldve likely gotten the job because She did fit the look and seemed to have already benefited through life in certain ways due to colorism and her having the potential to ‘WhitePass’ .. Allat to say.. this movie does a great job of showing that concept.. the noise that the hierarchy creates in communication of possibilities amongst black people.. Especially when the students interact with Phipps .. Despite being a Minority.. He has a Position of Power.. Which-is also limited in power.. His dual position Makes the students feel they can relate to him.. But his superior way of thinking, quickly reminds them that they have different realities. Phipps would be considered an Acceptional Exception.. Which is the term Tom Burrell uses to describe Black People who seem to have defied all odds of oppression, but are distracted by their own success so much, they don’t realize they are being used as Tools to facilitate the oppression , take all the hits, and given everything they need to become what they once despised. Tom Burrell has a book called Brainwashed. I think every black person should read at least one chapter. Or even a couple pages out that book. Fr fr. It’ll blow your mind the way he breaks shihh down.

Wow! That is sad, that people were saying that “Boys In The Hood” and “Higher Learning” were not that deep, because they were considered hood movies!

For this dialogue that challenges the mind of Malik, it is the moment that gives the step to meeting growth & responsibility. As for Malik's question to the professor.....will he be the responsible individual despite the color of his skin? Well it is a general question.

@@AxiomAmnesia Ok, I’m not gonna front. Dough always knew what time it was. He was just a knucklehead in and out of jail. If he didn’t die would’ve he gotten his act together especially after his Brothers death ? I believe so. It was always a possibility. Like I said, seeing him in College was a dope look, especially him being an elder/mentor to the youngin’s .

Higher Learning" and "Boyz n the Hood" are separate films that explore different aspects of the African American experience and societal issues. "Boyz n the Hood," directed by John Singleton, focuses on life in South Central Los Angeles, particularly the challenges faced by young African Americans. On the other hand, "Higher Learning," directed by John Singleton as well, is set on a university campus and delves into themes of racial tension, identity, and the diverse experiences of students. While both films address social issues and are directed by Singleton, they don't share a direct narrative connection, and "Higher Learning" can't be considered an alternate universe to "Boyz n the Hood. Each film stands on its own, offering unique perspectives on the complexities of race and identity in different settings. The connections may be thematic, as Singleton often explores similar social issues across his works, but they don't form a shared cinematic universe.
