Delilah and Joe (Jose) died in the robbery. Is it fair that the crew planned to give Joe's wife his share of the money and kept Delilah's cut for themselves? Couldn't they have given Delilah's cut to her sister (Juanita)? Tell us why or why not in the comments!

This film is such an underrated film. My dad served in the army during the Vietnam war. He came back home, but he wasn’t quite the same. My parents eventually divorced , and we really didn’t have a close relationship. One of my best friends wasn’t as fortunate, her father died in Nam right before she was born. She never got to know her father. The Vietnam War ruined so many lives. Black men were sent to slaughter. And if you were fortunate to make home, America treated you like crap.

War in and of itself is disturbing, but Vietnam was just brutal. And to think that for a large part of the conflict, they excused the rich and middle class in favor of sending people of color and poor whites to fight and die. Then, those who were lucky enough to make it home were treated like trash. It's sad...

My dad, who was a Vietnam veteran, told me that out of all the Vietnam movies he saw, this was the most genuine in terms of what the reality was truly like. He experienced all of those things, such as the head getting chopped off for good luck, friends getting blown up, the letters of “black man go home” and the disrespect when he got back home.

This movie holds a special place in my heart. The Vietnam War was before my time. I had two cousins who served. One came back as a heroin addict. Even though Delilah has the same name as Samson and Delilah, I think Juanita is more of Sampson’s Delilah than her younger sister. Anthony probably would have never went for the bank robbery if Juanita wasn’t coming out of pocket and taking advantage of Cuddy’s advances. Had Anthony been with the sister Delilah instead, she would’ve uplifted him and together they would’ve figured it out without the robbery. It seems as if Delilah loved Anthony for who he was while Juanita was infatuated with the image she created of him. Also it kind of shows who was really down for him right from the beginning of the movie, Delilah knew Anthony was coming to deliver the milk and she was at the door ready to chat it up with him while Juanita didn’t even bother to leave her room. She yelled down to him from the window. I think everything would’ve played out differently if Anthony chose Delilah instead of her sister. Juanita was the delilah to Anthony’s sampson.

Anthony should've gotten out of Dodge AS SOON as heard Cleon giving out money. Should've skipped packing bags and artifacts, took his money, and INSTANTLY dip (you can buy clothes and stuff on the way to Mexico); this would've kept him ahead of the law, whether or not if someone snitched. Then he could've sent back for his daughter. In fact, he really should've bounced as soon as he peeped Cleon feeling guilty while they were counting the money, that or "dealt" with him right then and there.

Anthony was back home for a while without a single word from cutty other than when they first met in the car… all of a sudden he coming down the stairs after she ruined their family moment barking at him about more money. This movie shows that in life its not always one BIG decision that can change it all. It’s usually a series of small decisions that add up. Smalls signs that will tell you to turn around. Was just him joining the military, no. It was joining and then taking himself completely out of the “world”. That caused a riff with his family and his gf. If he would of stayed in contact who know who would of been looking out for him to help transition back into life a home. He made so many bad decisions that added up to a HUGE MISTAKE. He still could of turned around after each wrong step. It was like he was just compelled

Cowboy didn’t get drafted more than likely because he had prior dangerous convictions or was already in prison. Before 1975 most felonies excluded you from service, however, as they began to get more hard up for bodies, some judges allowed young men to choose between prison or the Armed Forces.

My father was drafted at 19 and it killed his youthful dreams for his life. As a Historian there are things that I ask him but there are things that I will not. He has a photo scrapbook of his time over there as a squad leader. He has told me about how heavy dead bodies are among other malaise of war. He has "lost" the medals he received from his time there. I just asked him about possibly coming with me on a trip to Vietnam so that he can see the incredible difference and for me I'm curious about a POW Vietcong that he spotted that he got one of the medals for , he has a rather violent looking picture of the man. I've never asked him about what happened to him because I can more or less guess but I'd like to find his family and his story. Plus I think that my father could perhaps find some healing through it. This movie greatly reminds me of my father, he was a gambling man and he became the Milk Man which led him to be the first Black man in management in the Dairy industry in California. People are surprised that I, who am in my 30s, have parents who are a Nam vet and a mother who marched during the Civil Rights Movement and went to jail as a teen in Birmingham, AL in the Children's March that finally made the US government and JFK pay attention to and pass the Civil Rights Act, etc.

So by the time of the robbery, their relationship was pretty much gone, so think that's why they didn't give any of the money to Juanita, on behalf of Delia's sister. The switching of milk, to me symbolizes the switching of the guards taking the money and the container itself symbolizes her future death when she is shot and killed in the trash can. On another note, I am so happy i discovered your channel as it helps me to think outside the box and to have fun with different theories, Thank you!

Somehow, the disemboweled soldier was the tv reporter who interviewed Malcolm X after the house bombing. Also, Mr. Moltisanti's boss, Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri, was the white cop who spoke to Cleon right before the armor truck heist. I'll let myself out.

I think Anthony chose the wrong sister to be in a relationship with lol. Maybe when Delilah kissed him after returning from Vietnam, Anthony should've kissed her back & started a relationship with her instead. But I understand he already had a kid with Juanita & wanted to pick up where he left off. Plus he had no knowledge of Cutty yet. I'm saying maybe the whole Cutty situation wouldn't have bothered him like that & he could've dodged that whole emasculation ritual Juanita was putting him through, had he went with Delilah. Let's be honest, Anthony only agreed to that heist & went to prison because Juanita kept pressing him about money & comparing him to Cutty. But Delilah already saw him as a "real man", even when he was broke. She basically died for Anthony & I don't see Juanita willing to do the same thing, even after having kids with him. Delilah didn't even have a boyfriend throughout the entire movie either, so yeah she was fair game lol. Maybe if Skip cleaned up, he could've at least had Delilah & they both wouldn't have been so lonely. Who knows.

Burn the Money. As always I really enjoyed your review. And I would like to speak on Skippy’s post war medical condition. Some people could say that it was HIV or AIDS and would have a solid argument considering the fact that he was an IV drug user and possibly shared needles with people back than and he also bragged about all the women he was sleeping with. So those possibilities are kind of high . However even the Hughes Brothers stated that he came back with Agent Orange. And my theory on why Cowboy never went to the draft is because he was probably drafted but he also found a way to dodge the draft without going to jail or moving to Canada. And though Anthony’s dad probably had some influence on him joining the Marines I truly believe that Kirby was the main influence on him joining the military. Because he looked at Kirby as something like a mentor or second father figure to him. We know this because during his whole time in Nam we only know of him writing letters to Kirby. We don’t even see him writing his mom or dad. And that’s saying a lot. And lastly I personally think if Cutty never came into Juanita’s life while Anthony was away, she would have never rode Anthony’s case about a better job. Because back then a butcher was a rather respectable profession. No they weren’t rich but they made a living. But as Cheri pointed out many times Juanita got used to having the finer things in because she dated Cutty. Cutty was probably paying all her bills and she didn’t have to work. And held resentments because of it.

I recently watched this movie after a very long time and it is amazing to me that the Hughes Brothers, in their 20s, created a film what I like to call the American Classic. You get those type of films from the works of Martin Scorcese and Spike Lee creating films which capture America in a certain time period into a saga. That is what Dead Presidents is. Incredible and Powerful film. As well, its a way of storytelling that is missing today. To be really honest, the Plan would have worked if-in the narrative world-Anthony followed more with Kirby's advice. He was the elder but knows more. With Ant's Vietnam planning and Kirby's oversee, it may have worked. Even with the young Beat Cop, they could have adjusted.

A couple of things...Burn the Money 1. His life was already messed up when he didn't go to college before war or after war. He didn't have any skills and that's why he struggled. He always went towards criminal activity before and after war. The result would have been the same. 2. This movie has always been a head scratcher for me because it didn't seem to have an ending and I'm not sure what we were suppose to learn or take away from this movie. An average unskilled guy in the 60's chooses war over college. He returns and is stuck with kids and low income job. Commits a crime and goes to jail. Where's the story in that? 3. The judge played by Martin Sheen was also in a movie that had to do with Vietnam as well. It was about a man who was assigned to kill a rogue general and is famous for not really having an ending as well. Apocalypse Now. Martin's son Charlie Sheen was also in an exclaimed Vietnam movie as well, Platoon. 4. Delilah was in the Black Panther movement. She died (assuming) in 1973 or 1974 based on how long it took him to lose his job at the butcher and get his girlfriend knocked up. Do you think she was killed off to signify that black people did not have any choices in the 70's to survive? By 1972, the Black Liberation Army was formed and had several killings, bombings, and kidnappings. This was a branch of the Black Panther party in the early 70's that was more violent than before. Huey Newton had to flee and quit the Black Panther party by 1974. The Brinks robbery (that inspired the last act of the movie) happened in 1981 by the Black Liberation Army members. Perhaps the Hughes brothers (the directors) were saying that during that time, black men had no where to go to find peace. They couldn't go into the criminal world. They couldn't go to the church (see Cleon). They couldn't go into legit life (no money). They couldn't go to the Black Panthers or organizations. They couldn't go to their families. Maybe I'm getting affected by your channel. Now I'm seeing things in movies that I didn't see before.

Thanks for your continued support. You make a lot of good points. I dont think that the films do not have and ending, they just don't follow the standard format. Stories end in different ways, but "good stories" end with the protagonist solving a problem or reaching a goal. Some of my favorite films don't end that way. To your point about choices, it could signify that for some, they are doomed by a single choice, a few simple choices, or circumstance. What do you think about the way the three friends ended up in Vietnam to begin with?

@@AxiomAmnesia In my mind, they volunteered. Here's why I say that. If you were drafted, you wouldn't have a choice where you would go. You were in and that's that. However, if you volunteered, you had a chance to pick your poison as far as which branch you wanted to go to. I'm assuming that they did that as their draft numbers were close to being called so they could pick where to go. Recon units snuck around the enemy and didn't engage in fighting so that would have been a good choice if you didn't want to fight alot. My uncle joined the Coast Guard before getting drafted and that's how he avoided combat. :)

Now she was a tad harsh and telling him to get a better job and her willingness to keep that money from Clifton. With all of that being said. I would say that Anthony's issues and everyone else's come from being artificially placed at the financial hierarchy here in America. The white marine gets out and he is able to ultimately become a job. Anthony comes home as a war hero and he was barely able to find a job. This is all steeped in the racism in this country

Cleon standing where he was is what caught the officers attention. If he hadn’t have been there the officer likely would’ve just walked right by. Delilah wasn’t right for Anthony either. She had no respect for the sacrifices he made as a Marine but she was loyal. Just shows how Anthony couldn’t walk away from the past and how it used to be. Juanita was just as young as Anthony. With a baby that he abandoned her with. He didn’t write her and likely never sent her a dime while he was away. She should’ve told Cutty to stop coming by, but either way he would’ve made trouble for her and Anthony purposely because he was a hater and that’s what they do.

This was a well-written, well-acted movie...it's a sad story of the struggle that continues today of black/brown populations making it in this society.

It’s a classic for sure. One of the best. I just never liked the goofy face paint during the robbery.

Keith David says burn like that because he’s a Louisiana Creole and that’s part of the accent 🤗

I personally think that cowboy didn’t go in because of conduct could’ve been criminal record or him being unclear XYZ, because he does not seem fit, but if you are the only male in your generation, you are exempt from conscription

Idk if it was back then, but the military believed in the buddy system so them being in the same squad wouldn't be uncommon if they applied under that premise...the philosophy behind that was if your friend was in your squad then you're most likely to watch his back a little bit more than a stranger that you didn't know before service

I can tell that the Hughes brothers took inspiration from guys like Scorsese with the style and execution of this film. . . . . Its a great time piece. Very sad story. Larenz Tate was brilliant in the lead role and everyone else was great, too. Great analysis, y'all.

Hi. This video popped up in my recommendations and I am glad that I watched. I enjoy the dual commentary and how matter of fact your analysis is without the gimmicks. I wish your other videos were as long as this one. You have a new subscriber. I’m excited for your upcoming content. ❤
