hi sam my garage is getting wet inside on one wall the dpm is the same level as the concrete floor which carrys on outside past the wall {ledge}i put blackjack 2 caurses high above dpm but water still getting in and also one caurse of bricks only above blckjack are soaking wet when it stops raining thw water can disappear and dry out but floor stil damp outside of this wall ihave taken away everything also covered outside ledge with blackjack

I’m looking in to using the rods, my room is 2 feet bellows ground, what would you recommend to prevent damp and would you insert the rods externally 150mm up from out ground thanks Sam 👍

You need a competent qualified specialist to show you on site, below ground is waterproofing and above dampproofing

Sam...Our house is made of ash block can you drill into block and insert rods?

I am being converted to the side that says there are hardly ever any real cases of rising damp - the vast majority of cases are condensation or penetrating damp.

@@dampsam Thanks this makes sense. I have seen some university studies which say it is very hard to create the conditions for rising damp but this is all done in a lab (not the 'real' world). Isn't the only real way to test for rising damp drilling a hole in the wall and measuring water content of a sample from the interior as per Building Research Establishment Digest 245?

Loving the vids mate. For cavity walls, dont you think the cream is better than the rods. Because you only need to tackle one side.

That’s a good point, it’s all about getting the right amount of product in each hole each time

In cavity walls both leafs of the wall need to be treated - irrespective of the product used.

At 6:40 you are discussing the reading of the moisture meter in the mortar bed reading 21% and that this level of moisture in timber is the level at which you start to get fungal attack. The last bit is right but you make the very basic error of assuming that a moisture meter can give an accurate measurement of moisture % in masonry or mortar. It can't. It can only tell you the moisture % content in timber and he wasn't testing any timber. To measure the moisture in masonry properly you need to use a Speedy carbide tester. Ive seen most of your videos and i have never seen you use one. It may be rising damp or it may not but the incorrect method of measuring moisture in the walls has been used. It's hardly surprising that the damp industry has such a bad name if both you and the guy in the video don't know how to use an electrical moisture meter.

​@@johncranna You can use an electrical moisture meter to assess a wall, however as most of them are calibrated for timber, the % reading will be inaccurate. A moisture meter will give you an idea of which bit of the wall is wettest, to guide further investigations I.e. where wall coverings may need to be removed. In short, you need a knowledgeable operator to interpret the meter readings.
