Laura is right. Moisture meter is not for damp in walls and bricks. You must use a calcium carbide test. Also an investigation must be undertaken to establish the cause of the damp.

The most important step in damp investigation is diagnosis and that type of moisture meter was designed for use on clean timber. Here is what the manufacturer says “Contrary to popular belief, a moisture meter is not a diagnosis tool. Rather, it helps an inspector make an informed call about moisture’s presence within a space or material. If your meter is giving you a high reading, that merits further investigation -- dampness may not be the reason for the measurement; metals and salts cause false-positive readings.” You should read Building Research Establishment Digest 245 (Rising Damp in Walls - Diagnosis & Treatment) and you will see how to investigate rising damp reliably.

That device you are using there- that yellow thing with daft prongs should NOT be used on walls- house walls.. it's only for wood not house bricks...and those dopey Rods dpc is absolute rubbish....

Thanks for all the views & comments guys. In response to the comments this room had tide marks running along the skirting boards & the plaster at the base of the wall was damp. When removing the plaster before testing with moisture meter the mortar & brickwork all along the base of the wall was clearly damp & including the internal walls. There is a damp cellar beneath the room which is soden damp. A DPC is always a last port of call when other obvious signs of damp have been ruled out

What plaster did you use when repairing as dry rod says not to use gypsum plaster

If it’s an old house has gypsum been skimmed over old plaster? Covering lime plaster has been the death of many an old house.

Did u just put the rods inside and not out ? Or do u have to put it on both sides . Basically can u jus rid on one side ?

To stop damp dont repoint house built in lime mortar with sand and cement and same goes for render on inside. Simple

Oh no, Carbide test as a BARE MINIMUM, That damp meter may be picking up residual salts rather than it being "damp" Stick to plastering mate

the protimeter mms 3 is the most advanced moisture meter to date please use this and learn how to use it

@@alanyoung7532 i think your missing my point you can buy a damp meter for 20 pounds and say yes your wall is damp yet if you pay for the best damp meter the company has conducted and invested millions of pounds to make sure we get a more accurate reading which i experienced we carried damp works on a property and used dry zone cream the leading market recommendation in this industry applied a tanking coat from a market leading company with a track record and the most popular in sales and still when we finished the work the so called property surveyor said after we finished the works it was still damp, i checked the walls there was no salting no damp wet signs and no blistering of paint there is no way damp can come through 2 layers of new sand and cement with a market leading tanking within 3 months i used my protimeter mms 3 and low and behold it was condensation because the home owner wasn't living in the house and it was a front bay an outside wall which is always cold and she got it checked by another surveyor who said also it wad condensation dampness
