I think a hybrid of drifting/gripping would be faster than both styles. Being able to throw a car into a corner with no brakes, but the experience of knowing how far your throw will push the car through the corner to grip up at the end would be key I think. In drifting the angles are for show, but if you wanted speed, you would go less deep and there would be more emphasis on how fast you could regain grip to exit the corner. In some corners, maybe you don't even drift at all because there is basically no corner there whereas if you were doing it for show maybe you would to link the track. Techniques like ebrake would slow you down, so probably would have to be mindful about initiating the turn as well, only initiating by lifting the throttle. That's my theory at least

My friend is a good driver having raced in that category about 9 years & he's won a few races. There was a 16 year old kid that showed up never having raced that track. The 16 year old was using a slight drifting technique during the race and ended up not only winning the race but lapping my friend the 4.4 miles of the track. The kid was a super driver. Everything was great except he did totally wear out the tires on his car. I race a corvette in a different class and wish I could spend some time learning from that 16 year old.

I volunteer on sports car race team that runs in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in the ES class. Our fastest driver in the car, that I have seen, is also a drifter. And when things get wet, he is even that much more faster than the other drivers. And the other drivers are no slouches in the least and they have my complete respect. Now, he also has crazy raw talent, so there is that. But I can totally see how that experience would add to the ability to press the car even further to it's limits. I am not a fan of drifting myself, but it makes me want to learn drifting to maybe up my own racing skills.

The first guy who started drifting was actually a racer who wrecked and broke his foot, he finished the race with a broke foot drifting the car. He got first place. I rode a 91 can-a-tuna (suzuki katana) for 4 years, if you know anything about bikes you'll know that this 600 was the bottom of the barrel crotch rocket. I always rode it sliding around corners when going fast. The only thing I cared about was keeping the front tire in my line and I didn't care where the back tire went. I rode with a lot of different people and it didn't matter how big a bike they had or how sticky their tires were they could not hang with my bike. When you drift a bike you can break a corner into multiple corners just by sliding then moving then sliding then moving depending on how tight the turn was. I never dragged my knee but I have heard it actually gives you a pivot point so the bike will turn sharper. I just went by the feel of the bike and kept all my weight on the front tire. I would think that in cars you could be just as fast if not faster than the guy who has grip. Just look at how fast rally racers are, they drift and grip.

I know a handful of skilled/successful drifters in person and I have huge respect for what they're able to do. Great fun to watch them or sit in the passenger seat. Thing is, they all describe racing to be far harder than drifting. I have to believe them, my car is great fun on roads, but not too much use in any track discipline. Done a little sideways with spike tyres on snow and when I'm joining a car slalom event every now and then and the surface is dusty enough, of course I'll have my fun with a loose rear end. On those slalom events and more so in the sim I get the impression that both don't have very much to do with each other and that any reflexes you'll learn with drifting don't help with racing a lot, or are even counter productive. Everything that happens during a great drift, or getting the car into a drift or even setting it up for that job will make a race car slow. You need to focus on and feel completely different things. Worst of all, when I'm done with fooling around, it takes quite a lot of time to get rid of bad habits. Having just spent a week on snow, I think skiing (or snowboarding) is a great analogy. Carving = racing, slipping/freestyle = drifting. Damn hard to thread together a number of clean carve turns, but the feeling that comes from the g-forces, the lean angle, the quietness, is extremely satisfying. Things get bloody quick real fast and it's an exhausting thing to do, both physically and mentally. Have the rear of the ski step out and it kills speed (and morale) immediately. OTOH I can wedel (for a lack of translation) down the hill all day long without breaking a sweat or ever falling down. But throw in some carve turns - not gonna work.

Circuit racing is about operating the car just behind the grip limit. If you need super good car control skills it means you're doing something wrong already (unless you're driving bias ply old cars). However, drifter vs. rally driver would be more appropriate.
@maxnaz475 жыл бұрын
Already within the first 50 seconds of watching it, the answer is yes, a good drifter should have no problem becoming a good racer. It's about understanding clipping points, weight distribution, inertial braking and traction control controlled via right foot. It's the same for both disciplines, being on the very edge of control without loosing control. However, i would say a huge difference is the stamina level required to race endurance style races compared to 30-40 seconds of tyre shredding drifting.

My friends always argue with me about always drifting in video games and saying that drfiting is the ultimate way of driving (on asphalt, because rally is another league) is pointless, because "best drivers don't drift". That who knows the limits of grip knows how to correct the worst situations while racing, so, well. That's why I always win when we go Karting.

I mean karting is in that aspect a bit different than car racing because in a kart you have a solid rear axsel which means you don't have much of a choice you can't drive a grip style like you could in a car you have to drive a bit beyond that in a really small drift.

I was hoping it was 2 equally powered cars, one being drift tuned and the other race tuned. :P would've been cool to see

Anybody could become a racecar driver would you need is the right coach

The way i see it, a drifter probably has a slightly easier time contorlling a race car. Drifters generally "feel" the car movements better. Race drivers have lots of technique on their side, their skill set is made of techniques: trail braking, understanding pre-loadint the rear tires, things like that. All those can be "easier" to learn for one who can feel the car shifting on the tarmac, knowing precisely when the tyres are about ti give up. That's obviously my opinion, i'm no racer nor drifter

if Duane had a proper motorsport coach, that boy could easily beat those times.

Drifting requires a great understanding of the track. So, no surprise here.

no. the whole video is set up to favour the dirfter. conditions, time on track, you picked a british champion drifter and a nobody racer. stupid test.

How about the fact they chose FWD - not exactly an easy thing for a drifter to adapt to the different driving technique.

All 10 laps were filmed within 15 mins. We picked an Irish drift champion and Irish champion circuit racer. We thought it was fun to see what would happen!

@@driftgames_life Glad you did! What it proves to me is that experienced drivers will learn to adapt to almost any vehicle and get the best out of it in short time!

@@driftgames_life Still, in general, racing lines will be faster than drift lines in Racing Circuits and even at Rallycross, but try challenging a real racer vs a drifter in a MOUNTAIN PASS TOGUE and that really would be interesting to compare :)

@@indaansel9558 Tsuchiya, Taniguchi, etc all did it. Grip driving is faster than drift, they drift when they want to have fun, or if the surface is loose and it's more predictable to corner with some slip

When in circuit track racers would win this chalange... but when it came to dirt / rally track? this undisputed drifters have no word than to say "flawless victory"

drifting actually is recognized by FIA since 2017

A big portion of racing is tyre management, try drift round a circuit for 30 laps and see if you don't crash
