My phone lasts for 5.5 hours I started tracking my usage though screen time, realised I had been spending 4 hours on social media, primarily Instagram. First step was to limit app usage to 1 hour and only from 8pm to 12pm, the remaining hours, the app would be locked. I realised how detrimental it was to me. Finally, I decided to quit social media altogether. My attention span increased. My memory retention has increased. Can sit idle for more than 15-20 mins without reaching for my phone (Especially while waiting on someone or for something). I still consume media, but it’s sniped, search for what’s needed and it ends there rather than content being shown to me regardless of relevance.

I totally understand how phones have become smart at the cost of human smartness which is degrading due fomos and easy access to sources without any brain racking, scrolling over wasting time. But then for me it is wise use of smartphone which is a better alternative to switching to dumb phones, limiting social media to zero minimising scroll time to near zero by playing playing sports learning new skills or even reading books.

In the 50s & 60s the world started producing more food than required all thanks to green revolution. This gave path to fast food hotel chains like the kfc and mcd. But within a few years people learnt that their health has deteriorated, they were even consuming 10,000 calories per day, eating cheese burgers for lunch dinner and breakfast. However when people acknowledged the issue the fitness industry made a boom in the 70s and 80s, and this is the time when people like Arnold gained recognition, people started dieting, working out and got involved in physical activities. Similar thing is happening now, people are going to stick yo basics now, I use the old Micromax keypad phone and it has worked wonders for me. Normally the situation in the Indian families is that the child uses a advanced phone and parents use old dabbas, but in my family it's totally reverse.

The problem is - we think that the problem lies “outside” when actually it is “inside”. If most of the time you remain idle then even with the “dumbphone” you will find ways to waste time. But if you are driven by a dream or a purpose then it wouldn’t matter whether you have a smartphone or a dumbphone because you won’t have much time to spare for it. On Smartphones defense I would say that they have come a long way. They give you all the information about your average screentime including statistical data of your daily usage. They also show how much time spend on an app on a daily basis or weekly or even monthly. It also gives you the option to put time limits on apps so that the phone will ask you for permission if you want to open the app beyond the time limit which makes one conscious if they are accessing their phone often. Another things is that you can always turnoff notifications for any app. PS: I am more busy with work that I don't even have time to check my phone especially for social media except during holidays or weekends but I still carry a Z Fold 4. Once in a while if I use it more, it shows a large red notification in terms of screen time such as "you used your phone more than seven hours of your daily average🤣🤣

We can always have a dumb phone and refer to social media on our iPads or laptops.

It may not be possible to switch over completely, but one can always find a middle ground or "hybrid" model of phone usage to begin the process. I use My "regular" smartphone on weekdays because My work demands it, but on weekends I switch to My "dumb phone". That gives a much needed 2 day detox from all the incessant notifications and mindless scrolling that smartphones compell us into. And of course improves productivity and relationships. Now My target is to switch to dumb phone even after work hours on weekdays. Say from 6 pm to 6 am. Let's see.

good thought, but in our location the work never ends at 6, we are expected to work 24/7 and its a never ending toxic work situation, still thinking what career options to switch to for peace of mind

Don't think these cell phones were called 'dumb phones'. Any1 else agree with me?

My current phone is a Nokia 6303. It was delivered on the day Prince William and Catherine got married, so what’s that, about 12 years. Still works fairly well. Some people look at me a bit strangely when I get my phone out but perhaps I’m actually more on trend than them😀

I have made my Smartphone to Dumbphone by not installing time wasting and distracting apps. Also lots of Blockers on Browsers. Simply using phone for calling, texting, payments, learning and phone as a camera, map, music player, video player. That's all what we need. Do not make technology as a master instead make technology as a slave. NOTE : Technology is a dangerous master but a useful servant.

Smartphones made people dumb while dumbphones made people smart. It's irony to call them vice versa.

I had a dumb phone for around 20 years. All it did was calls and texts, and I loved it! If not for 5g, I'd still have it. My carrier replaced it with a smart android _for free._ I thought I'd hit the jackpot, but the thing manages to annoy me daily. It seems to have a mind of its own, turning on and off at will; offering me games at least once a day; accepting or declining calls at its own discretion. 😡😡😡

I was lucky enough to remember a time when Nokia made the best phones in the world, I do believe the word smartphone is an oxy moron, the technology is great but what it does it's users is another thing, I would love to get rid of my smartphone & have a basic Nokia phone, but my so called smartphone is a necessary evil for my work unfortunately
