I stayed in the Netherlands for almost a month some years ago. I remember I left with the impression that, generally speaking, they like to have control of their time. I would say they expect things to be or work in a certain manner/time and if it doesn't, that would annoy them. They seemed to be all about predictability. I joked with my Dutch friend and told her: you guys are not super flexible. And she said: You haven't seen Germans! 😂

So true...While dating a Greek man I realized how over-scheduled most people are (including myself). I realized it very clearly when I called my best friend to arrange for coffee or dinner and her answer was: would you be available in two months from now on exactly this date and time? I felt like: what the hell, why can't we just meet this week?

I really do not recognise the dinner thing. If a friend or family member is (still) in my house around dinner time I will always, always invite them. It's up to them if they like to stay or not. If I didn't make enough for 2, 3, 4 etc I either become creative with a salad or garlic bread, extra desert with fruit... or just order in. (When I lived next to a supermarket a few years back it was even easier, though now that I don't I realise even more what a luxury that was... sigh, miss my old house). And I have a below average income due to illness, so it's not about not having to worry about money either. Who ARE these people who say "we are going to eat now" and then expect their friends to leave??!

I love living by my agenda. Particularly when I watch 'ik vertrek' and see that for example builders are not showing up on projects, I just love that people here are more strict about time. Wouldn't want it any other way.

Foreigners especially from meditaranian countries have the reputation of being unrelieble . That is what the dutch think. It is of course a cultural difference and as we meet more foreigners we become more accostomed to their culture and even start AND Copy part of the meditaranian life-style.

I guess this agenda thing is the cause that lots of people live lonely, and many accompanied people feel alone, because there is no time to new people in our life, as all the time is booked for something or someone we already know. In my personal opinion plans for work, family and friends are fine, but there must be a gap in our lives that are open to a spontaneousness... Why not to plan for that time too?... We will be like: After dinner I have daily 2 hours free - or - my Saturdays until 17:00 PM are always open... So we let some (rustig) relaxing time for us open, where we can do whatever we feel like doing that moment, meet new people or try new things and be more open to feel belonging as going to a museum speak to a stranger and have the time to go for coffee with him/her... Maybe when I came first to Netherlands this was my impression (robotic people) I even thought they are rude to give me an appointment, after 3 weeks or for the next month, I don't want to offend anyone, I guess the culture and habits speaks for what is the area and atmosphere. But I still strongly believe we can always try to perfect it... ;)

1:05 if you're sick and you really need help but it's not that urgent, you have to call early in the morning to make a doctor's appointment that same day. Dutch GP's, as far as I know, leave a few time slots open so that people who need urgent help (but not urgent enough for an ambulance) can get an appointment within a few hours max. Then if the doctor says it's urgent enough, you can be referred to the nearest hospital that same day or a few days later, depending on the urgency If you are actually dying you can always call 112, from any phone and free of charge, even from another country's emergency number because a lot of those are put through to the emergency responders as well. Even if it says you're out of the service area, emergency calls are generally put though the nearest network available Appointments are made so doctors can help as many people as possible in a day, and they may be annoying but it's not like you'll be left to die without one. If you feel yourself getting worse call ahead of time, and if you're suddenly struck with needing urgent help call the emergency number. These guys make it sound like Dutch doctors refuse to help sick and even dying people without an appointment, and that's just not true

Hoi Nederlanders en buitenlanders. Ik ben Spaanse en ik ben nooit in Nederland geweest. So I can't really talk about Dutch behaviour, but I think that it depends more on the region, province and families you meet. It's the same in Spain. You'll find very open-minded and sweet people in Andalusia, but they're colder in northern provinces. I guess that Dutch people from the bigger cities and the Amsterdam area need to be more practical and they plan all their events as they might be "druk, druk, druk", but southern towns tend to live more calmly and enjoy the moment, specially after work. Apart from this, I find it very nice and appropriate because organizing everything allow people to know exactly what to do and it is more unlikely to bother other people because they share their plans too. In my opinion, Spanish are a totally mess. It's quite difficult for me to meet my friends because they're quite unpredictable. I had a friend that called me when she was already going out, whereas I was about to have dinner. I couldn't just get dressed better and leave my parents like that. She never said things in advance, so our friendship didn't last too much. And I had other friends who told me to go out, but the night before it or the same morning, then they said that they couldn't. There was always something that spoiled everything, so I decided to stay on my own. Now I only go out with my parents. I got tired of these stupid messy people. Other interesting topic is about visiting others at home. There are lots of Spanish people who just don't mind if you suddenly appear, but I'm against it. My education is different and I find quite rude if someone knocks at the door and they have the intention to come in and eat. They don't think that maybe I just want to rest, or maybe I'm about to go shopping, or it's possible that I can't offer an appropriate lunch or dinner because I don't have much to eat. It's also like breaking in my intimacy at home. I'm sorry, but if someone just comes without calling me first, I won't let them come in. I won't open the door. I'm more Dutch than the real Dutch. I don't use any agendas, but I have everything controlled in my mind or in those little sticky notes which I put on the fridge. Nowadays, I don't think people uses agendas as everything can be kept in phone notes or calendar. That being said, I think that my personality would fit in well in The Netherlands. Another thing: I thought that students would talk about spontaneous language and Dutch sense of humour. Although I have read in other comments that Dutch are "robotic people" in actions, I think that they're very spontaneous when they talk. They have a very special sense of humour and they're creative in conversations. They can surprise you with a joke or tease you badly. Ans it's sometimes difficult to know if they're kidding or if they are serious because they can be very sarcastic. If the conversation is online, then it's harder to know as you can't see their faces or hear their voice tone. But I like it a lot. It's funny. Maybe it would be great to create another video about Dutch sense of humour and jokes. Gefeliciteerd voor deze video. Het was erg leuk. Liefs. 😍😘

This video isn’t related to every Dutchie tho. I’m a student who lives nearby Amsterdam and studies in Amsterdam. But i dont have an agenda to keep track of everything. I’d rather do everything last minute and have fun with my friends than having everything organized and don’t meet up with my friends for a week for example. Planning? What is that? Can you eat that? Can you wear it? I don't plan too far ahead even if I'm Dutch, I just don't bother as I can't be bothered with planning too much. However in case of a trip I do try to plan way in advance to make sure I don't forget something that may cause trouble for me or others. Also I don't like surprises that end up ruining my day after a careful planning, so why would I bother too much? I don't like to over plan everything like so many others in the Netherlands do, just can't stand that kind of thing. There is no shame in being more free, it allows you to enjoy life a lot better. At lunch/dinner I couldn't give a damn if you are there or not, I will be eating regardless. If you wish to join me you should at least tell me in advance so I can make sure there is something you can eat. It would be awkward if you stayed to eat and there was not enough or nothing at all. So yeah, in that regard it is rather useful to know in advance what is going to happen.

I'm dutch myself so it's safe for me to say the majority of the dutch are not spontaneous. I hate the fact that in this country everything needs to be planned in advance. Always you have to put out this stupid agenda, visiting someone or going out spontaneously is simply not done. And it's also correct that when it's about dinner time, dutch people always say they have to eat which actually means they want you to leave. Luckily I'm also Indo and with most Indo's it's perfectly fine to come by unannounced and when that happens to be around dinnertime, there's always a place at the table and enough to eat 😊

I use a agenda because I am befriend in multiple social groups. From sporting to school/work groups but even with friends of my best friends. So to be aware of when every meeting is happening (or cancel one if there is already one planned) its more than useful to use a agenda. Otherwise life would be chaotic.

I live very close to Zwolle (15 minute drive) and here people don't just go to your home, you call first most of the time and people don't spontaniously stay for dinner that often because they feel obligated to go home i guess. It just depends in what kind of family you where born in i guess

For what it's worth I have lost all interest in these videos that keep framing Dutch people or society as being quirky or odd in some way, through the lens of foreigners' experience.
