@jankuiper34225 жыл бұрын

Volgens Urban Dictionary.

I come from Portugal and been living in the Netherlands for a while now. The best change to our eating habits when we go out, is to hit the restaurant around 5:30pm. This way we can merge the two meals people usually have in Portugal: late afternoon snack (called "Lanche" same pronunciation as "Lunch") and the actual dinner. We usually have wine or beer and a nice "plankje" with cheese, bitterballen, nachos, or olives (or whatever is in the dinner menu as "Starters") and if we find the rest of the dinner menu interesting we stay for dinner and have a main meal. At 8:00pm ish we are done and usually had a great time doing it. This frees up A LOT of time to do other things (specially in the summer), and connects really well with the end of the day routine. We find this approach much much better than in countries where people start eating at 8:30pm, or even later, and stuff themselves with heavy food, get late to bed, don't sleep enough, don't wake up early enough, etc, etc. Regarding lunch, if you don't like bread that much (as I don't), just make your own salads, or buy one from the supermarket. AH has some amazing salads, big variety, good price, and this is something you also can't find in south Europe. At home we still cook a lot but mostly internacional food, which is much easier in NL since there is a tremendously good variety of international ingredients in most supermarkets and grocery shops. So all and all, I'd say I've eaten much better since I moved to NL in regards to eating out, or buying from supermarket.

I read that Dutch cuisine until the beginning of 20th century was excuisite and full of non obvious and fine combinations of products and used many very special sorts of meat. Mostly for rich people of course who could afford it. So its complexity and sophistication were comparable to French and Italian cuisines. But in the beginning of 20th century huishoudscholen taught girls how to cook simple food made of cheap easily affordable ingredients. Although I've only experienced the tourist areas, the food I had in Bruges was great and Brussels was incredible (presumably with both French and Flemish influence). Admittedly I consumed all of it with some of the most amazing beer I've ever tasted. Agreed, sure i can appreciate Dutch food from time to time. And when you make a mixed dish from things (schotel) it can be really good. But it is pretty basic indeed. Barely any spices, always basic ingredients. Potato based, i like potato's but still. You do have to make a difference between what really is ''cuisine'' and the Dutch sweets, like Hagelslag and stroopwafel. That kind of stuff that is pretty much loved all over the world. I prefer the more Southern Europe way of eating tho, lunch time is bigger and they like to take some time for it. Eat out. And eat dinner bit later in the eve.

I love this so much, I watch it over and over. It is one big mirror for me. As a dutch person who is interested in this. It shows what's normal for doesn't have to be normal for another. It keeps me balanced.

This is the best episode. Learned so much, when it comes to food everybody has something to say, has insights, that they otherwise don’t share (on the other topics). Thank you all participants, you all made me smile and learn something about myself, ourselves here in NL.

They are all so right! ( Except about drop of ourse ) I'm happy that we have access to recipes and ingredients and spices from other countries, because the pure original dutch food is really needs some help!

In Belgium it's a little different. We have also the dutch cuisine wich is patatoes with meat and a vegetable, but we have also the French cuisine. The French cuisine is like Soufflé and Quiche. Then we have also some real Belgium food like witloof with cheese sause and hesp (kind of meat) and the fries ofcorse.

I am Dutch all my life and my native food is Indisch eten, which is Dutch-Indonesian kolonial food. So I would call Indisch eten definitely Dutch food.

I still think it's hilarious that my parents used to tell me to not eat too much of one thing that I really enjoyed because I'd grow to hate it eventually even though I'd only eat it with dinner. But at the same time you eat about 2-3 slices of bread twice a day without that being a problem and eating it your entire life.
