I have a problem with this episode in that it really only proves elephants are afraid of sudden, unexpected movements- not mice. They have excellent eyesight and like all prey animals, (yes, they are actually preyed upon when young by lions, etc,) movement draws a startle response. The way to have "proved" this would have been to put no mice under the covers and just pull them away as they did for the ones with mice hiding under them. They would have found that elephants are simply afraid of sudden, unexpected movement- not mice. Horses would startle the same way.

During the Elephant and the Mice myth…I’m pretty sure I heard somewhere that the Elephant isn’t afraid of the mice themselves…and more so they are “afraid” of the high pitch squeaking from the Mice, which makes Sense, Elephants have the biggest ears of any mammal on Earth, and so they can hear VERY well…sometimes too well for higher pitched sounds, Meaning the Myth would actually be Busted I think or at the least plausible

Most mammals have brains that are programmed to jump back or be startled by critters that scurry by in a hurry. Elephants, regardless of how big they are, are also startled by things that move by them fast, like mice. Accoding to elephant behavior experts, they would be scared of anything moving around their feet regardless of its size.
