i'm not surprised by the elephant myth. they kept talking about the size difference, how something shouldn't be afraid of something so much smaller than it.... meanwhile, i was flinching and recoiling from the tiny fly zipping around my room

@@RhinoBarbarianregardless of the cause of the behavior, if it can be somewhat predicted by saying that elephants are afraid of mice, that’s about as good as we can get until technology or methods improve. There’s a quote by George Box I’ve heard a couple times in science/math education that I feel applies here: “All models are wrong, but some are useful.”

1) we know flys sit on doodoo so we don't want them to touch us because of this 2) idk about you but the buzzing actually hurts my ears if they're too close to me 3) not about flies, but bugs/insects in general, it makes sense for us to be cautious. At a glance you can't telling what's venomous, so it makes sense that your brain sees everything as a potential threat.

I was told the reason elephants were if not afraid of mice, cautious around them is , Mice can climb in the trunk and do some damage. Imagine something crawling into your nose and you can't get it out and it starts biting you. I wouldn't like that either and neither would an elephant.

I have a problem with this episode in that it really only proves elephants are afraid of sudden, unexpected movements- not mice. They have excellent eyesight and like all prey animals, (yes, they are actually preyed upon when young by lions, etc,) movement draws a startle response. The way to have "proved" this would have been to put no mice under the covers and just pull them away as they did for the ones with mice hiding under them. They would have found that elephants are simply afraid of sudden, unexpected movement- not mice. Horses would startle the same way.

I know there are people who say that the Mythbusters shouldn’t have used a white mouse for the elephant experiment; that brown mouse would be more natural. For what it’s worth, I agree; HOWEVER, I think the reason that they used the white mouse was so they would be actually be able to FIND the darn thing if it ever decided to wander off into the brush!

During the Elephant and the Mice myth…I’m pretty sure I heard somewhere that the Elephant isn’t afraid of the mice themselves…and more so they are “afraid” of the high pitch squeaking from the Mice, which makes Sense, Elephants have the biggest ears of any mammal on Earth, and so they can hear VERY well…sometimes too well for higher pitched sounds, Meaning the Myth would actually be Busted I think or at the least plausible

Most mammals have brains that are programmed to jump back or be startled by critters that scurry by in a hurry. Elephants, regardless of how big they are, are also startled by things that move by them fast, like mice. Accoding to elephant behavior experts, they would be scared of anything moving around their feet regardless of its size.
