To those asking "what about him not focusing on playing defense in that situation like the others? That probably costs his team." a) That is focusing on team success and is irrelevant to the question of how easy or difficult it is to score on an empty net. b) Ovechkin's +/- with him on the ice against an empty net is *+70*, 4th-best out of all 1,751 behind only Bergeron (+78), Crosby (+76), and Marchand (+71). c) His Goals Against/Minute rate is better than ~3/4 of these 50 superior defensive players (13th). d) None of this even includes games that didn't see a goal either way, and the Capitals held onto their lead and won.
@oskarihonkasaari3215
@oskarihonkasaari3215 8 күн бұрын
While I don't think Ovechkin is stat padding, your points b) and d) somewhat negate each other. From a team perspective, a player who scores a lot but is scored on a lot 5 on 6 is worse than someone who always keeps it scoreless (as then you always win). It would be interesting to see an "overall ranking" of 5 on 6 players by taking into account the fraction of 5on6 time they get and using that and their goals for and against to extrapolate how many games they cause their team to win and lose while having a late lead.
@PinholesGraham
@PinholesGraham 8 күн бұрын
"a player who scores a lot but is scored on a lot 5 on 6" See point C. He is not scored on a lot or even "some." EDIT: And I don't see in the slightest how B and D negate each other. D is the least important point in a list of them about an assertion that is irrelevant to the point of the video anyway. So if you want to, you can ignore it altogether. Otherwise we'll be going down this rabbit hole getting further and further away from the point forever.

I appreciate his standpoint because it's true, however Gretzky's first eligible season wasn't played in the NHL either, and he had to deal with the 1995 lockout. Ovi is slightly disadvantaged in games played by more lockouts and cancellations, but not as much as it seems at first glance.
@OwlRTA
@OwlRTA 9 күн бұрын
@@PinholesGraham actually, Gretzky wouldn't be eligible for the 1978-79 NHL season (when he played his first professional season in the WHA) because he was too young, being only 17 by the start of the season. In fact, the only reason why he was even allowed to play in the NHL in 1979-80 season was because he was on a WHA team (he would've had to wait until the next season otherwise; the age limit for non-WHA players in the 1979 draft was 19). Gretzky did have to deal with the 1995 lockout, but he was way past his peak by that moment in time, and probably only lost out on about 10 goals.

I think you've changed my mind - I've gone from neutral to "I can easily defend Ovi's ENGs". And I'm a Pens/Sid fan who doesn't want his accolades diluted with Ovi's but still happy for him too even though I don't wanna be. Love this stuff infinitely more than all the other YTers who just read the boxscore to their viewers. I know you collab'd with Hockey Psych, but he's moved away from his analysis beginnings and is more like Ecks now, just chasing clicks and views and doing opinion dumps. What’s insane to me about this “Ovechkin is an empty net merchant” talking point is that he doesn’t have that many more empty netters than Gretzky. The way some people are talking, you would think Gretzky has never scored on an empty net and Ovechkin has done it hundreds of times, but as of right now Ovechkin only has eight more in his career. Considering both have scored almost 900 goals, such a small difference is practically a rounding error. Who would have guessed that players who score obscene numbers of goals also score obscene numbers of empty net goals?

@@suslordmetro I completely disagree. Matthews has already had injuries and is at a .65 goal/game rate over his career. Ovechkin is at a .6 goal/game rate over his whole career. The whole reason Ovechkin is an anomaly is bc of how well he has played past like 34. Everyone though he was screwed after last szn but he pushed back. Goals/game rate aside, if we look at their career comparisons, Matthews is sitting around 43.1 goals/szn and even through this szn Ovechkin is still around 43.9/szn. I think it's still way to early to say, we'll have to see what it's lookin like 5, 6, 7 years from now.

FINALLY SOMEONE MADE A VIDEO ON THIS!!!! THANK YOU! Bunch of morons out there don't remember that prior to last year gretzky had the most empty net goals ever at 56 and at the end of the day a goal is a goal no matter how and when it is scored. It also important to keep in mind that ovi is a winger and while everyone needs to have defensive skills in their game, wingers like ovi generally don't require as much as a center or a defenseman would so the fact that a lot of people give him heat for that seems a bit unfair especially when plenty of other players have their defensive flaws. Patty Kane hasn't been the most consistent defensively (prolly cause he is a winger and he knows for wingers like him it is limited and offense is their main priority) and Crosby was awful defensively until 2018 ish which is ironic cause he is a center where he should be having a 50/50 consistency with both offense and defense.

Okay, but how about the fact that once you use adjusted goals to adjust for offensive environment, Ovechkin already has 992 in 1459 games whereas Gretzky has 758 adjusted goals in 1487 games played. You want to talk about empty nets? How about playing in the 1980s vs the mid-2010s.
@icedo1013
@icedo1013 8 күн бұрын
Are we giving Ovechkin the exact same equipment Gretzky used too then? How about the same coaching strategy? Are we capping them at the same speeds? Are we going to ignore the prevalence of studded goaltenders Gretzky would have played against, like Ron Hextall and Patrick Roy and Ed Belfour and even Dominik Hasek for the last half of his tenure? We could make him obey the two line pass rule so that every cherry picked breakaway gets called back, and make sure to discredit every goal he scored when the tip of somebody's skate blade was inside the crease. Maybe we should subject him to the same kind of hack and slash brutality that was ubiquitous in the 80's too and see how many goals he can score with the blade of a stick crashing down onto his gloves, or a violent tug on the back of his shoulder. Or what about a prime, upgraded Gretzky with 2025 technology and equipment and understanding of the game? I suppose we should hand over to Lemieux all of Gretzky's records, since *IF* he wasn't injured he clearly would have scored more adjusted points for his career, which is important to some weird people for some weird reason I guess?
@gabrielarrigo1525
@gabrielarrigo1525 8 күн бұрын
@icedo1013 No, we’re not going to do all that because (1) we don’t have the ability to do that and (2) by arguing that SCORING WAS ACTUALLY MORE DIFFICULT in the 80s for factors that are absent today (poorer equipment technology, offense-preventing rules, "studded" goalies, etc.) you are actually undermining your own point because it wasn’t just Gretzky scoring a whole lot - it was the entire league. League average shooting percentage was *8.5%* in 2015-16 compared to *13.6%* in 1985-86. In Ovi’s rookie season, league average shooting percentage was 9.9%, marking the highest point in Ovi’s career (until this season, which as of right now has a 9.9% shooting percentage, coincidentally. So let’s say I agree with your narrative, but then I look at these numbers. I still am wondering how the heck the scoring environment (WHICH IS DICTATED BY EVERYONE IN THE LEAGUE) was so high in the 80s? It’s almost like era-adjusting statistics is important because it puts everyone on the same level as everyone else and allows us a *best possible* comparison.

@@icedo1013 arguably the coaching for the Capitals was pretty awful during his prime. Caps GM screwed around hiring inexperienced coaches. Might've made a difference to have better leadership. Also, if you think a 6'3, 230lb guy from Russia who's spent basically none of his career injured despite being one of the most prolific hitters in the history of the game would have a bad time in the hack and slash era, I think you've got it backwards. My hypothesis is that when considering targeted employment, strength of opponents faced during employment, delayed penalties, and penalize being on the ice for goals - that ovechkin will be less impressive in comparative analysis. Ovechkin‘s empty neck goal stat is somewhat irrelevant because she has like 20 more empty net goals than Wayne Gretzky and there are several reasons for that The first reason being in the 80s a lot of games against Edmonton were not close. He didn’t have very many net opportunities. Another reason is because over the last few years, the capitals have been forcing Ovechkin out there to get more goals so he can win the scoring title I truly believe she will beat the record this year and keep playing one more year so that his total non-empty neck goals will still exceed Wayne Gretzky’s
@icedo1013
@icedo1013 8 күн бұрын
See, here's my thing about it: Ovechkin spent 100% of his incredibly fortunately uninjured career trying to put the puck in the back of the net. For the first half of his career or better, Ovechkin was a defensive non-factor, and his assists often come from rebounded shots as opposed to visionary passing. All this, and Ovi *might* beat out 99 by 10 or 20 goals if he plays another season. Gretzky, on the other hand, was doing all of that at the same time that he was racking up 1963 assists and a +520 in an era where that mattered. If Gretzky still has more assists than a prospective challenger has points then he's not a better anything than Gretzky was an all around player, period. Ovechkin will get his goals, and he'll have his moment in the sun, but 30 years after his career is over people will only remember this as an asterisk against Gretzky's monopoly of offensive records.

I’ve never liked Ovechkin, don’t think he’s captain material, and his game is self serving, (that Russian reporter put it best), but have to acknowledge he’s one of the most talented goal scorers to ever play the game. Playing the full 2 mins on every PP, standing still while your linemates do all the work helps too. To be the greatest goal scorer of all time, and surrounded by the caliber team he’s had around him, his team success has been underwhelming at best. 1 cup (worth mentioning against an expansion team way over performing) in 20 yrs with no other deep playoff runs. He’s been a liability defensively many seasons and it’s costed him team. But hey, he got his cup and there’s no arguing his one timer/shot is absolutely incredible

Other things to keep in account: Ovi had 3v3 OT, Gretzky didn't Ovi didn't need to worry about the two-line pass rule, Gretzky did Ovi always mostly went to the left face-off circle to shoot his shots, Gretzky spread his out This also proves another point, OVI IS A STAT PADDER

The fact that Ovi can go to the same spot repeatedly and STILL gets it done is insane. Teams know it's coming, but they still cannot stop it. 3v3 OT isn't much of a benefit for Ovi, as he is usually a defensive liability in 3v3. He's traditionally not put on until the end or unless there is an icing call against the opposition. Rule changes happen all the time. Cry more.

Counterpoint...... he cherrypicks EN goals/doesn't focus on playing great D and that is why he is so high on that graph (hence why the graph doesn't account for any defensive factors). Every other player is focused on actually playing defense and doing their job. Ovechkin doesn't care and goes for the kill shot. Would be interested to see the caps record when down 5v6 men compared to other teams to see if his aggressive style comes to the teams detriment.

Scoring an ENG, no matter who does it, is a 99% surefire way to win the game versus committing everyone to defense for two minutes. All this puritanical crap about "doing their job" by playing defense... their job is to win the game, dork. I'd much rather have a pseudo 6v4 with a fifth guy ready to score an ENG than treating the situation like it's a powerplay with extra skaters.

@ that’s like saying I rather go for it on 4th down every time because you win by scoring. Of course being aggressive helps you win if you score, but on the flip side it can also cost you games.

@@RandomMan__ See pinned comment. Team records aren't available for 5-on-6 individuals but goals for and against are. With Ovechkin on the ice, his team has all but guaranteed victory 70 more times than they have given up a goal and made it a coin flip. That better than all but three players.

@@Anna-k4t3m the video is not about empty net goals not counting. Read the title. It's about the skill needed to score many of them. Empty net goals and PP goals are often brought up to delegitimize Ovi's chase of the all-time goals record. I'm seeing this critique of the video being brought up on reddit as well, which is funny because those neckbeards are the ones make these statements and then act like they didn't.

@@JG-tu5qu "Many people assert that empty net goals shouldn't count" Bullshit
@PinholesGraham
@PinholesGraham 9 күн бұрын
@@Anna-k4t3m The essence of the groaning about Ovechkin's ENG will always boil down to the fact that they think his ENGs cheaply earned, and thus his record-breaking will be, too. That is, they are less of a "real" goal. When I say "don't count" I mean people don't count them *in spirit*, not that they literally think they should be taken off the record books. Semantics. Using that one sentence as a representation of the entire video's position of that opinion is strawmanning or lazy, as I think it's pretty obvious they're not saying what you think I asserted they said.
