"Lundqvist did not play a meaningless game in his NHL career (a game where his team had a 0.0 chance of winning the Stanley Cup) until his 930th game in the NHL, which came during his 13th NHL season. That means for the first 12 years of his career the Rangers were either a playoff team or had a mathematical chance of making the playoffs in every game. The only season in his first 12 years the Rangers did not qualify for the playoffs was the 2009-10 season when they were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season in a shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers." -NBC Sports

That might be the best Hank stat ever. What's worse for Hank is that the 1990's logjam of Hall of Fame goalies (Brodeur, Roy, Hasek, Belfour) all won the Cup at least once in their career. And yet, Hank never did. He is our generation's Curtis Joseph. Terrific goalie for years and years that never got the ultimate prize. Goes to show you how tough it is to win the Stanley Cup. Even tougher now that we have 32 teams in the mix every season.

“Lundqvist would play out of his mind, rest of the team not matching that effort” truly the story of his career. Hank was truly one of the best to ever do it. Even his “down turn” was still good, and we aren’t really even acknowledging that the team was rebuilding during that time and icing some uhh shall we say, devoid of talent lineups. I mean, since the Rangers started the rebuild they’ve had at least 3-5 non NHL players at all times and he was still keeping them somewhat competitive. The fact he never won the Cup is criminal. Just goes to show how it really is the hardest championship to win. I’m almost kind of glad he wasn’t able to play for the Caps, don’t think my heart could handle seeing him in a different jersey. Thank you for this video, it was a privilege to grow up watching him play.

Seconded. Especially given the fact that it wasn't a Final 4 series. NYR-NJD in 1994 was Final 4. We had a lot of legendary Finals series to look back on. But that 2nd Round series was next-level. Every play matters, as the cliche goes. That series came down to one play. One shot from Stepan. And I think that was a 3-1 series deficit for NYR, too. Hank needed to be razor-sharp from Game 5 onwards.
@theroseexperience7 ай бұрын
Yet Hank was just better than Holtby when it mattered and what he did from Game 5 on is just unseen by goaltenders. Holtby let in bad goals, Hank did not but that goalie interference call on DSP in Game 5 which would have put the Caps up 2 goals in a close out game is one of the worst calls in playoff history.

As a lifelong Northern Virginia resident and Caps fan, I would enjoy seeing a breakdown of our most tragic defeats. I think most years in the Ovechkin era are arguable for most tragic. The sweep against Detroit in the 98 finals which was actually very close for a sweep. The Easter Epic. For me the one that hurts the most is always probably going to be 2015, just because I barely remember watching the 2008-2010 series (I’m 20 years old now so I was pretty young back then). That one came at just the right time for me to vividly remember it and I was on a vacation with a family full of Rangers fans for it too so that was just brutal. I rewatched that game 7 a couple of years ago and it was just as bad as seeing the loss for the first time. I had forgotten just how well the Caps fought, and they really did seem to be in control in that OT until the face off that doomed them. Another year where fantastic goaltending and bad luck robbed Ovi of a cup and perpetuated the unjust choker label.

After the loss to the Kings seeing his face lying there after the final goal just broke my heart. Having one of the best goalies playing for your favorite team is fantastic but he did so much that I actually wanted him to be traded to a team that can help him win that cup to have that as a accomplishment on his resume. If it wasn’t going to happen with the rangers at least trade him New York owed him at least a chance. At the time our defense was just horrendous and a lot of time blamed henrik for things he had no control over. He dealt with a lot in New York and the whole time he kept loyal. But I wish he would have gotten a cup. Maybe he can coach and win a cup that way one day

As a Penguins fan (rather obviously), Lundqvist is the best. The old Atlantic and the current Metro have been spoiled with some of the greatest ever, from Brodeur to Richter to Fleury, but NO ONE was better in division and playoff play than Lundqvist. No one. He stole the 3-1 comeback in 2014 and almost stole the Cup. He's really an equal for that 2014 Rangers team to another former blueshirt, John Vanbiesbrouck. He is by far one of the best when you look at critical stats outside of the record.
