No guitar is made bad, people are missing the point; a well set up guitar is the best guitar money can buy. PRS guitars worth 4000 pounds have felt worse than Squire strats in the past because they haven't been treated with respect. Parts can be upgraded if really necessary. In my opinion, we care too much for gear... Just make music, you don't need a Gibson Les Paul (and a second mortgage) to play rock out. Brands have just brainwashed us and given us false perceptions so that we empty our wallets for what is ultimately wood bolted to wood.

I disagree. Cheaper guitar tend to have a great many flaws. I owned a couple of Encore guitars way back and they sounded pretty good and even played like a more expensiveguitar out of the box, but both of them quite literally fell apart in less than a year of use. After that I paid an extra £100 for a Squier Tele that still works great to this day. My brother's first guitar was a Burswood Strat that sounded shit, played shit, had jagged edges, had a bridge that was so ragged it would cut strings within a few days and fell apart not long after. The problem with this video, and I'm not having a go at Dave here, is that it's not taking into consideration that a new player that really gets into guitar would be using this as their main instrument. It's alright to say after a few hours that it sounds and plays well, but will it still be in one piece 5/6 months from now from everyday use?

Great review Dave, when I was a total pauper many years ago I had a blue jhs encore strat and it shocked me how good it sounded, I did the usual pathetic thing like putting tape over the name when I was playing at my local working men's club !!!! How sad is that, I sold it when I bought my first strat but really missed it and deeply regret not keeping it but hey ho that's life we all do stupid things, I love your style I have been studying your pentatonic positions and find it incredibly easy to understand your description, thanks very much for all your efforts in sharing your thoughts and skill with everybody. I've had my Encore strat for 22 years now, my parents got it from Argos when I was 8. Been to countless gigs since, where people have made comments or questioned why I keep choosing the Encore, I never gave a crap and just focussed on rocking the show. Took many years before I learned about Squier, Fender, other brands, their genuine advantages, and also all the non-sense gatekeeping that comes along with each community's sourest members. You get what you pay for, but a true musician NEVER looks the bad in something that can create music, that is a hallmark of snobs, EXCELLENT MUSIC DAVE.

I just bought Encore Strat. My first EVER guitar, no knowledge of playing. But I got 32 years of life under my belt and I always wanted to learn how to play it. So I went to shop and bought it CHEAP. Is it Fender Strat? Sure, it's not. It doesn't have as quality materials but it's pretty light and my first hour of practice was so enjoyable. I have every intention of upgrading in a year or two when I'll be able to actually produce a quality sound but if it's your first guitar or just something you want to play in your room I would say go for it. It really is beginner friendly both on a financial specter of things but also regarding quality. Until you're ready to play live somewhere this guitar can really do the job

I'm watching this because I sold my Gibson ES-335 in favour of a more ergonomical shape. I ended up buying an Encore Strat and a Marshall MG 50 DFX, along with a few Hotone pedals all for under 300 smackeroonies. I'm quite satisfied with the sound of my current setup, and I also like little nuances about the guitar itself too. For example, the neck is satin finish and no matter how sweaty your palm gets, it never sticks. It's also very lightweight, almost like playing air guitar. Anything to do with electronics can be easily modified. I think they're perfect for the 'skint' guitarist.

Back in the late 1980s or very early 90s when I used to buy the monthly Guitar mag. They gave a new Encore 12 string acoustic guitar a rave review So off I went to my local music shop. You could do that back then . It was that new they had to order it in for me.( No jokes please} A couple of weeks later I collected it. My 12 string at the time was a Martin my uncle had given me in the 70s and this Encore at the time cost around £120/£150. wasn't that far behind it for SQ and great build quality. My son loved it so I had to buy another and I know a few friends after playing mine bought one. I traded mine in a few years later and got double what I paid for it. It was a exceptional guitar.

Yeah, I just got a half size version of the model you have here, and ITS AMAZING! I'm most impressed by it's resonance. It's not just a flat dead pickup sound, the guitars' resonance (it vibrates) gives it a pleasant warm sound. So, dont always judge an instrument by how much it costs, but what it sounds like and what it feels like to play. It's really reassuring to know that there's some very playable budget instruments out there now that beginners and students will get much pleasure from. Times are good for guitar players.

A few of you have asked whether all guitars need setting up. YES! Even top American brands do not come properly set up. If you're talking about Custom Shop or one-off instruments, maybe not. If want to improve how well your guitar plays / stays in tune, or you change string gauge - it will need it to be set-up. I trained as a luthier under Herbie Schwarz at the London School of Furniture (1989-90), and I've done a few (hundred/maybe thousand) set-ups. There are very, very occasional dogs that just never seem to play well, no matter what you do with them, but in the main, nearly all guitars can be noticeably, (sometimes radically), improved, (even the dogs can be massively improved!). It's worth paying someone who really knows what they're doing if you want a distinct improvement, (and if you can afford it). Luthier's will charge anything from £25 to £60 (don't quote me), for a standard set-up, (not a fret-dress, or refret - that's a bit more). However, probably not worth it on an Encore or Squier Affinity/Bullet. So, . . . You can learn to do it yourself! There's a million KZbin videos out there, (some of them are dubious, be careful). Get a few basic tools, (cheap off Amazon / Ebay), and give it a shot. Study, take your time, and you can transform your own instrument. It's what led me into to building them! P.S. - Word of caution: be careful not to cut your nut slots too deep, and don't over-tighten that truss-rod! GL&HF!

My first two guitars were Encores, one from 1986 and the other from 1989. I've recently got into properly working on guitars so I rescued them from rotting in the loft and I've been surprised by both of them. The '89 one is a Strat copy (complete with legally interesting headstock) and the neck plays like butter. It needs some work because the thread for the trem arm has shattered and the bridge isn't properly aligned so the top E has a tendency to slip off the fretboard so I'll be replacing that soon. I'm in the process of swapping out all the electrics and pickups and I need to do a little fret work on it - but nowhere near as much as you would think for a 33 year old, £120 guitar that has spent 20+ years in an attic. Two or three slightly high frets but apart from that it plays beautifully. The '86 one is really interesting though. The first electric guitar I ever owned and is some weird hybrid of a Strat and those 1970s Japanese Teisco/Kawai type guitars. 19 frets, Teisco trem, mini body and the best fret-end work of any guitar I've ever owned. The pickups were bollocks so I stuck an X2N in there and the wiring was frankly baffling (a capacitor connected to itself on the volume pot and the tone pot just connected to ground) but again, brilliant to play. I love my Encores.

You're right about the Encore necks Dave, I've played and modded quite a few of these guitars and the necks have always been good with excellent fretwork. Encore guitars can be picked up for as little as £10 at car boot sales ,(never. pay more than £25), they always need a set up including a fret polish as they've usually been sitting around for ages before making it to the car boot. I prefer the really old ones that had a shiny finish on this back of the neck.These guitars make great modding platforms and fitted with a decent set of pickups, (the ceramics they come with are not to my taste), sound cool. Although the electrics work ok they're not the best quality, the mini pots and cheap pickup selector switch are best replaced if you're modding the guitar but if you're a "if it don't break don't fix it" sort of person they'll probably do the job for a while. Buy one cheap and spend a few quid, (around £50 should be more than enough), and you've got a really nice little guitar.

Somebody just gave me a an Encore Strat just like that because it was cluttering up the house. I thought it would be a bin job. I have a vintage Kramer in my music room, but when dusted the Encore off and tuned it I found it very enjoyable to play. It sounded fine all the way up the neck, no buzzing or high frets and it stayed in tune. It came as quite a pleasant surprise. The bridge and machine heads are a bit cheap but do the job okay. I would happily jam with it already and nothing has been done to it. any advice on reasonable upgrades will be very interesting.

In addition to Dave's awesome playing, I'd also like to point out how bang on Dave is about that Kustom amp. I have the exact same one Dave. Bought it well over ten years ago second hand for £30. I also have a 15w Marshall amp but you know what, that 10w Kustom amp just sounds so right!

Lol! I got a job lot of guitars for £50. A magnificent cruiser by Crafter strat which really is decent - do good I warranted putting fender tex mex pickups in, then a Stagg 3/4 lefty and an Encore full size lefty. The frets could do with a polish on the Encore - it’s been sat around I decided to convert it to right handed - right handed nut, right handed neck and middle pickups and going to put s humbucker in the bridge and put right handed pots in. Might even do a fret level for ultimate playability. Will let you know if it’s any good when I’ve done. I can remember in the 80s though when they were just unplayable cricket bats.... hence it’s taken that life by to consider doing anything with it.

Is this one of those 80's Encore's made in India at the same factory those 'Fender' Sunn Mustang strats were made at? I just snagged one for 70 quid on facebook. Very under-rated and good guitars that don't command a quarter of what they should sell for (go me)!

This guitar reminds me a lot of my '80s MIJ Squier Bullet. I figured it was just some cheapass guitar that somebody had put a set of good pickups in. Nope, the guitar came that way. But now those guitars aren't as cheap anymore as people are aware of them.

In the end these machine made guitars will kill off all but the most expensive mainstream models and like beer we will see a rise in custom made guitars as people search for their own identity in what they play. Having tried far too much micro-brewery beer I can definitely say that the search is very enlightening :-) .Another blast of a video Dave. Keep it up.

My first and only guitar is an Encore E99, a les paul copy and I love it. The only thing that bothers me is the action gets higher from the 9th fret when you play the upper E string, which sounds like out of tune but the rest is fine to me. If you want to cut feedback from that guitar you're playing, you should plug it to a Boss Katana, which I use, access to the software and turn on and edit the noise gate, or you can get a Boss Noise Supressor pedal. I bet that Encore will sound a lot better if you do one of theese things.

Dave, just read in the Guitarist Magazine Fender Stratocaster Handbook that Jimi's 1966 Black rosewood board strat, played at Monterey in 1967, is intended to be displayed in the old Hendrix flat at the Handel House Museum in London. Perhaps when You and Mike Bradley hit London you should check it out and see if it is indeed there.

I buy and sell guitars and when I have finished with levelling and polishing the frets, rewiring and and sometimes the pickups (I have found some older cheap guitars with very good sounding pups in) so don´t have to change them. In other words a complete refurbishment they can play and sound as good as a known make guitar for a quarter of the price.

Dave do you get some sort of income from the ads that sometimes come up on your channel's videos before they're shown? I normally skip ads at 5 sec but I let them run in full for your channel as I hope you're getting some kind of payment from them through for example an adsense account set up through google? It's not much, something like 10,000 views gets only 1 dollar depending on the month but just wondering.

@WizardOfCheese
@WizardOfCheese 4 жыл бұрын
My first guitar was encore and it just felt horrible to play, neck felt clunky, it never stayed in tune, the bridge rusted after a year, strings were too far from the fretboard (i didn't know how to lower them at the time). My memory of it was it sounding 'flat' and cheap, no warmth or clarity, just muddy mid-tones and not much else unless you really strum it hard or pluck hard. Personally not a fan, especially not when you can get a squire for £50 more that is honestly miles better. As others have stated I think you could make any guitar sound good lol.

@@thedavesimpson it was the exact same one as you've demonstrated, even the colour! It was dusty and un-played, and even had the plastic film still on the scratch plate. I stripped it down and changed the strings, lemon oiled the frets, and it sounds great, and looks like new! Came with stand DVD, tuner, strap, and even a spare set of encore strings .... all for £50.00! I'm so glad I watched your video before purchase. :-)

Very enjoyable video! Thanks. Just bought one of these for £30 at a charity shop, after an instant perusal of +ve web reviews. After watching your vid was motivated to engage in some modest setting-up: truss, couple of minor replacement bits, new strings, etc.. All I need to do now is learn how to play it - something that was never going to happen if I had to invest £££s to plumb my meagre-to-non-existent talents... If no go, will find someone with enthusiasm and ideally talent, but zero £, and pass it on. Would gladly accompany you for a pint if that was an option! :-)
