As a Canadian, two suggestions when it snows. 1) Shovel your driveway. The reason, you drive on it enough and it will turn to ice and then you will have a lot more problems. 2) Brush all the snow off of your cars. The reason for this is the snow on your hood will cover your windshield as you drive and then you won't be able to see while driving. And the snow that is left on your roof will do the same thing, blind the cars behind you.

Not only do they have excellent grip in the rain, but I drove up my heavily inclined driveway a few hours after the 12 inches of snow we got in Kansas City in a front wheel drive jetta without an LSD. I think you’re right on the money when you are talking about driving an EV just has a different set of considerations. The other interesting thing is the i3 is such a 1.0 electric car, that is especially evident in how it deals with cold weather. In a lot of the groups when you see people being critical of EV‘s, they have in mind a vehicle like the i3, with a pretty limited range, slow charging, great difficulty in the cold, etc., etc. The early EV’s really did have challenges in these areas that the better modern ones have mostly mitigated. But your initial point is still critical, you just have to know how to deal with them differently than an internal combustion engine car.

Wait a minute does the i3 use a different chemistry than a Nissan leaf? My original 2012 Nissan leaf even after 65,000 mi could still go 54 miles as long as I didn't turn the heat on the original generation had a resistance heater which basically took half the battery packs capacity and that was only a 24 kilowatt hour battery pack Yes it sucked going home in 4° weather with no heat it really sucks however I would preheat the car until sweltering inside while plugged in and the car was basically hermetically sealed on really cold days we would sit in the car running off of umbilical power and I would have a co-worker unplug it and I would take off as long as I kept the car closed it didn't really get cold until about 45 minutes into the hour and 10 minute drive. The leaf is very well insulated and sealed. Of course I ran the heated seats. My new Nissan leaf could do over 100 mi summer or winter heat or air and it has a 30 kilowatt hour battery pack Why does the i3 see so much degradation from temperature? Even though it has a larger battery pack than both of them at 33 kilowatt hours? What's the difference?

Watching this from Quebec, Canada, where winter is a 4 month affair and where EVs are quite popular (34% of new car sales were EVs last quarter) makes me laugh quite hard. BMW i3s are a rare bird here, it was expensive so not too many bought one but they are 100% usable during winter. Just put some winter tires on the thing (and replace the wheels if the OEM ones are too hard to find tires for). Problem solved! Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec from December 1st to late March anyway. Easy on the accelerator pedal, and voilà. Kansas needs better equipment to handle snow!
@100PercentJake11 күн бұрын
The OEM 19 inch wheels have Blizzaks available for them. For $400 per corner you can buy the wheel and tire direct from BMW as part of the "winter preparedness package", lol. With the RWD and light weight I bet these things are an absolute ball in the snow with proper tires. As I mentioned in the intro, EVs are a tool and using it properly is the important part. With cabin preheating, battery preconditioning, and a charger at home I'd absolutely take an EV over a gas car during winter 100% of the time for convenience and never having to pump gas in a blizzard, lol.
@fleecystheking11 күн бұрын
@@100PercentJake The magic sauce in EVs for winter is that the (big) battery under them keeps their center of gravity quite low. That keeps the EV stable and predictable in the snow. It isn’t nose heavy or too light in the rear; it’s just right. Of course, electric motors make it super easy to spin out and lose traction (happens on dry pavement as well for FWD EVs!); that’s why going easy on the accelerator pedal is important (as it is in gas cars with good power in general on ice/snow). EV ownership is simply different. Not worse in any truly measurable way than a gas car; just different. You never wait to fill up the tank on the daily with home charging, the car is just always full and ready if you plug in daily; those minutes accumulate over time, so if you spend some more time at fast chargers on long trips it’s fine, you’d have spent all that time putting in gas weekly otherwise. No biggie. The charge door vs snow issue is not that big of a deal; I’ve had EVs since 2018, and got it really iced maybe 2-3 times (with real Quebec winters in the mix LOL). Snow is easy, just brush it off. Ice from ice storms, now THAT’s fun to clean off! PS : dude, get a good snow brush! They extend so you can reach the top of the car you know! In Quebec, driving around with a snow bank on the car is worthy of a ticket. Super dangerous for drivers behind you! Love your work!

I live a thousand miles north of Jake. You have to clean off all the snow before driving the vehicle or even if the vehicle isn't going anywhere as the sun will melt the snow and the darkness will freeze all doors shut. Also, snow on the vehicle is a hazard for all other drivers which you will know once a big piece of snow has peeled off another vehicle on the highway and blinded you. The sun has a better angle of attack and everything in Kansas is melting in the sunshine. I keep a flat bladed shovel in the trunk all winter long and I will use it as it makes it so much easier to push a vehicle out. I know people with EVs who drive them all over creation all winter long. They must have battery packs that are in much better condition than yours. I approve of doing donuts as you learn to control your vehicle, steer into the skid, get your foot off the gas, touch the brakes to increase the possibility of disaster. Basic stuff that you won't learn without "flying by the seat of your pants". I must clarify. Traction control makes you think you can drive. The brakes are just there to allow you to break contact with the slick surface you are on so you go into a skid. Used gently, brakes can be helpful. Happy motoring.

EV is different than a hybrid for sure. You are only talking about a 1st generation of hybrid development. No one should expect much from this old BMW.

The i3 is an EV with an optional range extender. With or without the range extender the powertrain is still an EV.

I’m sorry that your EV doesn’t work in the winter. Actually it’s kind of misleading to say your EV doesn’t work. You should state how old is it. I own a Tesla EV and I’m in Canada and I can honestly say that it is the best car I have ever owned for the winter and I am 72 years old. It heats up the car remotely and takes it from -5 to 70° in about 3 to 5 minutes. It melts the snow off all the windows without me, touching it and maybe be 5 to 10 minutes. My charger never sticks in it with ice or snow because you can buy a cover sort of like a hood with magnets that actually surround it as far going up or down hills that are snowy or icy I live on a fairly steep hill and I have no problem at all navigating while I watch all sorts of other cars slide down the hill. Mind you I do have all wheel and I do have snow tires. I forgot to mention that the range I have while it is reduced in very cold weather is still close to around 400 km.

After what happened in Florida with 2 back to back major hurricanes....no ev for me, ordered to evacuate but grid is down.....so you fire up the generator, so at that point just get a normal car
@joetz111 күн бұрын
300 miles will take you very far from the hurricane I have fled several times in my EVs and it hasn’t been an issue
@05milmachine9011 күн бұрын
I see your point, but my generator will run off gas, propane, and natural gas...making my EV a multi fuel vehicle if I need it to be. My solar panels make more than I can use the rest of the time. It isn't hard to be prepared for a hurricane if you don't wait until the last minute.

Just fill the bathtub up with ice and beer and ride out the hurricane and watch tv.

Funny you say that but gas stations require electricity to pump gas dont they? And ev chargers have electricity 24/7. Huh thats weird
@ThriftMachine6 күн бұрын
@ganymede6535 where does that electricity come from?

Im enjoying the videos. Do a reaction and review video on new evs. You did a awesome job talking about evs in winter. Most people don't how anything works. That is the biggest problem. New evs or anything that is app controlled are awesome in winter. My model 3 is more efficient than my Honda civic down to -20 in my case. Then it might be a wash.

Great skit, impressive drama but an old BMW i3 is not “all EVs!” 2011 Nissan Leaf had cabin heat via all with external power preferred.2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has cabin heat via app while plugged in. Sorry you have an EV with issues. As to lithium Ion batteries, please see the high number of EVs in Norway, a very cold country!
