Today I'm trying out name brand art supplies versus the generic store brand art supplies. Can I guess which is which? We covered the logo and brands so I wouldnt know - a blind test to figure out which was the best one. Inspired by the expensive taste test series by Cosmopolitan! Can I tell the difference?

I'm a lover of Arches watercolour paper, but if I can't justify the price, St Cuthberts Mill makes great 100% cotton paper at a lower price and it's great. Can you get the SCM brand over there Chloe? I know it's widely available in the UK aswell as AU.

I bought my friend Bianyo Professional alcohol markers before as a budget friendly option (72 for $40) since their Copics ran out. That was back in November, and I checked in 2 weeks ago on how the Bianyo markers worked out and they love them.

I had both Copic and Artist Loft markers. When new, they were the same basically, but then I had a point where all my things were in storage for a year. When I got them out, the Copics were good as new, and the Artist Loft were literally unusable. They got a crust on the nib. Similar thing happened with my watercolor paints. Cheap paints separated and refused to remix, and the fancy paints were just fine.

@bleatingheart
@bleatingheart 11 ай бұрын
I had a box of ALs and before I was done using them for the first time the fiber nibs were flattening and splitting. If they've since switched to foam nibs it's probably not an issue, but if they still have felt/fibre I would NEVER recommend them to anyone. Those nibs were also known to get weird and moldy.

I have Ohuhu markers, which seem to run out of ink before the nibs go. I just got a few artist loft, they’ll be interesting to compare. For what I do, copics are probably over the top, but maybe I’ll get a few to try.
@paintedjackal7157

I’ve had a similar experience! They were great at first, but then the nibs started to basically fall apart and fray after a short amount of use. Letting them sit didn’t help the quality at all, and while mine are still technically useable I rarely grab for them. Plus, (and I don’t know if this was just the batch I got. I didn’t get a set, just a random selection off of the rack.) the inks didn’t want to play well with any of my other markers. It’s like they blended well together, but they really didn’t want to interact with my Ohuhus. They blended, but they more so wanted to bloom or splotch in areas. They might’ve changed the nibs since then, and I maybe just had bad luck with the markers or colors I so happened to grab, but they’re not up to par for the price in my eyes haha.

I think the difference between a expensive branded items and normal items is that on how they perform in long run.. For example, a painting with expensive paints probably will last for years without fading. But as someone who can't afford expensive art supplies, it's good to know that there are cheaper options which are good enough to start with.

With watercolor supplies, the price matters more I feel. My best advice is DO NOT buy generic store brand watercolor paint usually. Brands like Artist’s Loft and Master’s Touch fall short in terms of quality and price for their watercolor paint. They smell awful, separate in diluted washes (which is not the same as granulation), dry oddly in the tubes, and worst of all, feel chalky on paper. That GREATLY limits watercolor techniques like layering. Generic oil and acrylic paint is where you’ll be less likely to waste your money. Watercolor paper is another story, I heard Artist’s Loft has decent wood pulp watercolor paper. Most cheaper watercolor papers are made of wood pulp, which affects how well paint is absorbed. Higher quality cotton watercolor paper allows better paint application. However, these papers are extremely expensive for the amount you get. For a balance of price and quality, I recommend getting Prang palette (NON-WASHABLE KIND) watercolors or Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors for paint, and full sheets of cotton watercolor paper for paper. You can cut down these huge sheets to whatever size you want and it’s much more economical than pads or blocks.

i think the difference with a lot of these are longevity of the supplies. a lot of the store brand paint markers and alcohol markers ive had have dried up extremely fast or the nibs started to rot over time, but my name brands (copic, posca, spectrum noir, etc etc) have lasted the test of time. i think its not that much of problem if you use your markers up consistently but if youre like me constantly using different mediums without a solid "use them up" consistency then the longevity of a product is something to consider before buying.

Fun video! Thanks for sharing 🥰 I use 5-6 different brands of acrylic paint, and I found the blue Liquitex to be instantly recognizable solely based on the consistency! Although I sometimes wish it would be a bit more "flowy". In my opinion the colored pencils that come closest to Prismacolors are the Arrtx, with Kalour and Brutfuner sharing 3rd place. No one can touch the Prisma's vibrancy though ❤ Posca's used to be my favourite acrylic markers, they are unrivaled when it comes to paint flow, you have to shake and push other brands repeatedly in a drawing session, whereas Posca has a great paint flow. Other brands have a less scratchy nib though, which is an advantage when using paper. The only other brand I've come across that is on par with Posca's paint flow is the 30 set by Ohuhu.

A note about the Copics: I have noticed that sometimes Copic markers are a bit dry when you buy them, and need to be refilled to work as smoothly as they're supposed to. I'm not sure why they come that way, but it could be a factor of why they seemed more streaky compared to the Artist's Loft. It does stink to spend $8 on a marker just to find out you have to spend more on a refill just to use it lol, although I think the fact that they're refillable is the one thing that makes them worth a little extra money. I'm glad to hear the cheaper paint pens are worth a try though! I'll have to get some!

Hullo Chloe, I enjoyed watching this video and seeing you compare the products! I know that many art products are inflated price wise because name brands charge more for advertising and quality of raw materials. I have used “cheaper” acrylic paint and did not notice any difference from the higher priced brand. The real difference showed just 5 years later when I noticed a color shift and how much the painting had faded! It was confirmed when I removed it from the frame and the portion under the edges were darker! Alcohol markers are not a lifetime product and even with museum quality glass protection inks do fade! I am curious about Ohuhu VS Copic marker as the Ohuhu brand has become a quality brand and product, yet still remain affordable. I know watercolor paints are an area where you can get good quality paint from student quality/range, but it is not rated for permanence. I wonder if you have ever tried watercolor painting? What brands have you tried? I have become a fan of DaVinci Paints of California. They sell all kinds of products from Alkyds and watercolor to Oil paints professional quality paints at reasonable prices. Not a budget brand! But so reasonable, I have questioned why paints like Dan Smith or M.Graham are so much more expensive ? Wonderful video Chloe, thank you for sharing, please keep them coming!

Copic inks would fade under the sun too. Alcohol ink is dye based so they will fade regardless. They are meant to be used for works that are scanned for print reproduction. Watercolors your gonna need to do research into pigments. Because some are more stable than others. And cheap brands often use dye and fillers into their watercolors making then not quite light-fast.

I think with some of these items you have though, only the Copic was really the top tier product and yet it was the one that surprised you the most. I guess the paint brushes too. The paints themselves are probably made in the same factory and often the cheap one just has a slight change to the ingredients, but is still made by the larger company. With pencils, Prisma are a little expensive, but they're also not really quality pencils. Pencils are interesting to test though, because some really expensive pencils can have a harder core, because they are designed for detail, so now they draw doesn't always indicate price or brand. Although I would kind of expect a nicer pigment perhaps. If you tested oil paints, you would see some difference too (actually Jazza did a video on cheap v expensive oils a few years ago). The cheap ones, once you squeeze some paint out, the oil binder comes out separately, versus more professional grade pencils where this doesn't really happen. You should try the Arrtx paint markers by the way. Mira uses them a lot and loves them. They are so much cheaper than Poscas and are so much fun to use. I think you would love them. I bet they do run out quickly though and they are not open stock, but are very fun to use.

It's because of this video I bought the professional level Artist Loft paint in teal from my local Michael's and I have no regrets. Thank you ❤

Time is the biggest test. Do the colors fade? Can you use the materials a year later? Most of the cheap ones would fail, if other tests are to be believed.

Well that is a difficult question to answer whether expensive vs cheap are the same. because most companies like say Arteza, Mont marte, or any store brands some of them do reach out to bigger companies to produce like a set of pencils but slap their own labels on them. copic markers are like 12 bucks or more in Australia

I personally like the texture and the finish of liquitex basic paints the best. I've used the heavy body and the store brand but the basics will always be my favorite.

My issue with non-posca paint markers is that once they start to get a bit dry and you need to push in the nib, sometimes they dump half of the paint in a huge blob

So there is a thing I know at least for food stores. If there's a brand name and a non branded or "cheap" one beside it they are from the same company usually. It's to one get rid of over stock of product that is still usable just didn't hit the right whatever, they also a new label and sell it therefore still making money off stuf2f they'd loose money on. There's a company here in Canada called no name that's actually it's own brand now because it bought so many off brands in different areas. It's got comical now. it's obnoxious yellow and says no name then says what it is underneath fair for sauces, noodles, cheese etc but the funny part is they have limited supply of say beach chairs or umbrellas, coolers, reusable cups, towels. All saying what it is on it.

The Princeton brush you weren't impressed with- I like that line for watercolour. It's a mix media brush but it really doesn't feel like an acrylic or oil brush to me.

Try the same test on someone with little to no knowledge on art supplies 😁 beginers might not really know the difference or what they should be looking for as long as they make something they like 😊

While a less expensive item may have performed well here, there are still questions. Will it last as long? Will it not only draw as much, but not dry out fast? Will it fade faster? But for those who "just dabble", knowing we can get great results without breaking the bank is good news!

I worked at Michaels for a long time and Artist Loft isn't my preference for student grade. It all comes down to personal preference I think. 🥰

@@TheLoveMiku The paints often aren't as pigmented so you will end up using more paint or needing a medium of some type to get the results you want. The paint brushes tend to shed fibers and not hold water or paint as well as other brands. I will say that the paper is okay depending on what kind you use. The markers tend to be streaky and not contain as much ink as other brands. The nips don't tend to last as long either.

With the acrylic markers, were they both water-based acrylics? I ask only because I always use oil-based on ceramic mugs. The water-based always washed off easy for me.
