Today I decided to test overly sponsored art stuff..this is part 1 so if you enjoy it I'll be sure to do more! I keep getting recommended Kiwi Co boxes from different creators and since I've never worked with them or spoken with them before..I figured I would subscribe and buy one for myself and see if it's actually as good as other creators say they are... Kiwi Co boxes are arts and craft boxes filled with different creative products for different ages. I purchased the "Maker Crate" -
"Maker Crate is a monthly craft box dedicated to the discovery of new art and design tools to help turn artistic visions into design realities."
Pre-order my brushes: artisticbearco...
The box: www.kiwico.com

I subscribed to Kiwi Crate for me, an adult, for a while. One thing I liked was the sheer variety of projects. Everything from printing fabric to making soap to making mini lanterns. Even though I COULD buy the supplies for each project every month, I wouldn’t try most things on my own, and you get just the right amount to try out a new thing. If you want to continue it, then you know you like it already. Or if you’re like ehhh not for me, you aren’t stuck with a bunch of supplies you’ll never use

My husband gifted me the makers crates for my birthday. So far I have done the lettering cup and a lamp made from wire, they had everything in the box and were very good quality. I think the Makers crate is good for someone that wants to do crafts but doesn't know what they want to try. I learned I don't like working with wire! 😂🤣😂

The best handlettering tip I ever heard was not to be afraid to lift your marker! It's not cursive! You can lift your marker as often as you like. I think of handlettering in strokes rather than letters.

Three years of Japanese in high school plus some occasional studying when I find the time as an adult here - Japanese symbols are very simple. It's (with a couple exceptions) always either a vowel by itself or a consonant + vowel combo and the vowels all have just one pronunciation. A [ah]; I [ee]; U [oo]; E [eh] & O [oh]. So the word is pronounced "oo-kee-yoh"

Stencil syggestion: use fine tip to trace the stencil then fill in afterwards with brush tip. Much cleaner and quicker. Also less likely to move the stencil.

I have two kids, 6& 7, and having been getting the kiwi crate for over a year now. They love them. They look forward to getting them in the mail and it's one of the few things they will just set still for. There is any where from 1-3 projects per box and my kids play with them for days after making them. Plus they come with a book that has a story to go with the project as well as STEM info and other at home activities. Our last one had a simple fruit dip recipe that they could make on their own and they LOVED it. Also for other parents on the fence, both of my kids are high energy, demolition crew set of girls and these kits hold their interest.

I haven't tried this line of Kiwico, but my son was subscribed to another line from them for a year and we really enjoyed doing them. They always included everything you need, except for maybe a pair of scissors and the instructions were always extremely clear. Usually they also had an instructional video. The material included was of a good quality. They usually also included some extra's which is nice if you do something for the first time and might mess it up! The project in the box was always very reasonable compared to the price, especially taken into account that I don’t live in the US and it included international shipping. It was always fun and kept us occupied for like an hour, after which we could play with the project. It always was something that held up extremely well. As said, I don’t live in the US and shipping usually took a bit longer, but never too long. Stuff always arrived undamaged. In short, I highly recommend these boxes.

Wait. I tried handlettering as a lefty for years with brush pens, and I always fail, because I "push" in the wrong direction and the tip of the pen just flaps around weidly. How the f did you manage to keep the brush tip "stable against the push direction"? (I have no idea how to describe it.)

I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and I really enjoy them! You’re a wonderful artist with a bubbly personality and a wicked sense of humour. Can I just say one thing - the wild zooming in and out and back and forth… I know it’s all the rage with youtubers now, but I enjoyed your “old” way of cutting videos a lot more. I know you’re free to do however you wish and I’m not saying do it differently, but - does anyone have a similar problem? I really do get seasick. But then again, I’m a whimp. Anyways, you’re doing an awesome job here. So thank you.

A very small percentage of artistic ability is natural talent. It's all about training your muscles with repition especially lettering, download some calligraphy practice sheets and watch a video on it and just start filling as many of those in as possible you'll get it over time! Hand lettering is not an overnight natural ability it is dedicated practice and love for improvement

17:52 It's pronounced like "oo-key-yoh" just like it says on the pin, where you sound out the short u sound rather than read it like a letter u. Japanese is quite easy to pronounce since you just sound out every single letter. I have 2 of those mugs where you can insert whatever you want to personalize, I'd just be very careful about the edge of the paper nearest the rim coz one of mine leaked water through that side ruining my design 😥
@JamieTries

I've gotten the Maker Crate on and off for a couple years now, and they can be real hit or miss, but you always get some new tool or supply that you can reuse, which is nice. And I like combining different boxes into a single larger project when I can't think of what to do with the project as-is. My one complaint though is that they give you a paper inspiration book and make you watch videos for explanations of the tools and project, which can get a bit frustrating. I'd much rather have it the other way around. But the videos are very helpful, the woman narrating them has the most soothing voice ever, and, it does answer all the questions you're likely to have- including for example, answers to the question of how to wash the travel mugs. I know that when you're filming a video, you can't always stop and watch a 10-minute instructional video. But for anyone considering this box, I just want to make it clear that you're not just given a bunch of stuff and expected to figure it out on your own.

Stencil tip! - You only draw around the edge of the stencil while it's on the page, you don't try and colour it in while holding. With these pens, they have the small nib, so you could draw around the stencil with the right colour, remove the stencil, then colour it in. It means you can colour more slowly, be more precise, and you don't have to worry about accidently moving the stencil out of place

The boxes she featured looked very cool and your tumblers look pretty sweet too! I believe that the “stencil” is more of a lettering guide. You use it to create a saying in an arc without drawing guide lines. I do wonder how much those tumbler’s cost? Unless you buy a bunch in a bulk order I have not seen them for less than $18.00 each! I believe that this box has amazing value for money spent! I am quite taken with your designs! Just so lovely!

I’ve seen some of the boxes contents are a bit eh or I’d struggle with that but this one really looks kool and fun and I’d probably use my bugs to put my markers, pencils or paint brushes in. The thing is I don’t believe you get to choose with box you get and therefor I’m not sure it would be a good fit for me. I am vision impaired/legally blind so there’s that factor to contend with and this one was very freehand and didn’t have to be a certain way or it wouldn’t work so I think that was awesome I love your second mug. The flowers and leaves look gorgeous xx

That is not a stencil for that purpose. Its a line guide to curve your letters. You do a faint pencil line with one of the curves and then put your letters on it.

My great grandson Loves these Kiwi crates since he was 4 years old and I started him from the 5-8 yo category and he just absorbed it all. Every year I go up one level and the beginning of each month he starts looking for his special crate. Best thing ever for children to learn from simple instructions and fabricate things without using a computer… just brains and everyday items. Amazing!

I love those mugs! I won't be able to get the artbox, but I'm going to see how I can recreate the process of this on paper with my 6 yr old twins!

As soon as you pronounced kiwico I got NerdECrafter flashbacks for some reason. A lot of hers and other creators' vids are regularly sponsored by them, in fact the only times I have heard about this brand are when their sponsorships are mentioned, so all good things. Great initiative to unbiasedly review them ❤️❤️

Chloe: -uses nails to press down the template- Also Chloe: Why is it scratched? I get not knowing the first time but surely it was obvious what caused the "scratches" on the final thing after that? 😭

I love the 1st multi coloured one the best, well done. You could use the stencil to make a pencil line so you can have a line to do some curved lettering maybe.
