In my experience every insane record collectors favorite record is “the next record.” But what I’m coming to terms with is you can’t own more records than time. What’s the point of having all the grails I want if I can’t listen and be intimately familiar with them. I do try, when I start obsessing on what I need next is to just enjoy what I already have. It’s insane how often you rediscover stuff you filed and it’s like getting something new for free!

I always love how much you exude that enthusiasm for the music! There's definitely some obscure and rare stuff that I really love, but a lot of my absolute favorite albums are fairly common and luckily weren't super expensive. I have a lot of I want, and though I could fairly complete much of my wishlist on the Discogs marketplace, I totally agree about the thrill of the hunt! It's so much more meaningful to find those grails in the wild, plus flipping through the bins and chatting with people at a record store is a great way to discover new music that I wouldn't have found otherwise.

Your excitement over rare finds is infectious and we all have experienced that feeling of coming across a rare or even not so rare records to add to the collection. Your videos have also introduced me to artists that I had never heard of before. Overall just a great resource for record collectors, new and old. I'm 53 years old and grew up on vinyl. My older brother introduced me to some great bands as a kid and I remember walking down to the Music Forum (Record store that was in Gardner, MA), and thumbing through the records...spending my allowance on a new 45 or saving up enough until I could get the latest release from Pink Floyd, Kansas, Aerosmith, etc.. Your videos remind me of the talks with my bro. Keep it up.

Agree with you 100% Out of all of the obscure bluesy hard rock bands I've heard, nothing ever beats Ten Years After. Magical Mystery Tour and The Doors is better than 90% of the obscure psych albums I own. Jimi Hendrix too. Tower of Power made incredible funk albums that are better than most of the obscure funk around. I love collecting the obscure stuff and the rush of finding that stuff is why I love hunting! Some obscure stuff also really clicks specifically with you. Where Zeppelin may click with almost everyone, Arzachel clicks with me and is one of my favorites. Bob Dylan clicks with most people but I can really relate to Nick Drake. Its always up to the listener!

I like how you place a lot of these rare records in the context of the major bands of their era & genre that they were trying to emulate. It's the same way with rare garage 45s. There are a lot of bands trying to be the next version of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Yardbirds etc. etc., but even when they're imitative, they can't always imitate it perfectly & that's where the individuality creeps in.

That Armageddon album is great. I also have a clean promo that I know I paid less than $50 for. One of the last things Keith Relf did. There are many big-dollar albums I want. But I also love going through the bargain bins to find those "lost gems" that continue to go overlooked. Albums I myself am unfamiliar with, but that look promising. What I've always told people, "Holy Grail is only significant if you actually like it!" I used to get so annoyed of people that would tell me, "OMG..you have to own this/that album!" My reply would be, "why, I don't like that artist/band, why would I buy an album of theirs?" Owning an album just to "own an album" to me is the most ridiculous thing ever!? I don't own one album by Steely Dan, I never cared for them. They bore me to death! I understand their significance and influence, and if they're your thing, grab every album they made. But I do not feel the need to own an "original copy of Aja bc someone else tells me how awesome it is!" What I get off on is finding a "rare " album to me, that is listed for like $10, bc it was a band/artist that I really liked, but they weren't hugely successful, most people didn't listen to it/know about it, so if you find a copy of it, it's usually in a discount bin! Love your videos..keep up the great work!

Hi Dillon, really interesting video. It reminded me of another video you did not long ago which was something like your 10 most-played or favourite records. And I was thinking, because it was you, it would be 10 records I’d never heard of. So it was fascinating that you were still picking out Zeppelin and Floyd etc, despite the hundreds of obscure records you have publicised on your channel. Because it showed that, however much you pan for gold outside of the obvious pool of great bands, there is a reason why those bands sold millions of records - Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Dylan - they are the pinnacle and there is not an ‘undiscovered’ band which is their equal. Which is not to say there isn’t a ton of great, less well known music out there to be discovered - there is. In fact it would be an interesting exercise one day to count how many different artists are comprised within my record collection! But to your point - let’s not kid ourselves that Frijid Pink is better than Led Zep II. To pretend otherwise is just inverted snobbery. Great topic for a few beers down the pub, shame you’re on the other side of the world! Greetings from London.

I’ve been buying tapes since I was like 10 and records since I was maybe 14; I’m 50 now. It’s always been about the music initially but as I got older I got more into “original” pressings. In the 90s the market wasn’t flooded with reissues so often the “original” pressings were your only option. Thankfully they weren’t so expensive as they are now but were trickier to find before the dawn of eBay and discogs. Anyway I’ve made lots of money over the years on grails I’ve found cheaply in the wild so I don’t mind if I drop 4 figures on a really nice clean Blue Note once in awhile. But I don’t do it very often!

I had a record store years ago and had a kid that would come in with 20 bucks on Friday and buy 20 records, no tax. I said he has to be the happiest collector because he wasn’t focused on rarity or something being in NM condition. He was just listening to and building a collection he loved. Meanwhile, I’m in Chicago, Austin and Indianapolis looking for the cleanest copies of rare records that I wanted for my collection usually to be disappointed w/ VG finds at NM pricing! Anyway couldn’t agree more! That Fraction is one rarity that for fans of Psych. Doors, Sabbath and PP Xian music is worth seeking out a reissue. Unbelievable!

I kind of have this philosophy even for reissues of my most wanted records. Of course they are! 😊

In the end i dont care if they got inspired by old bands, as long as they create something new for the era nowadays. Btw congrats for the collaboration with analogue productions😁🥳

Sorry if I’m one of the mean comments you were talking about! I know we are all suppose to just like what we like but I come from an investing background and I can’t not see records with the mindset of value generation, and I know how value is given to something, it takes two people agreeing on its price and a third person to pay it then others to see that happen. Then the value is set. But those people have to stay around and keep interest going, and if theyre all from one generation and they’re getting out of record collecting because they’re getting really old it means a new class of collectors have to come in and acknowledge the value of those fringe niche albums, and I don’t see gen z and gen alpha doing that. Theyre not going to incorporate “farm” into the thrill of the hunt unless someone they look up to says farm is cool, and those people are getting out of the game. The value is temporary, the same way the value of Huey Lewis and Robert Palmer is going down because the amount of fans that like them are lessening, because they’re not around anymore and all the people who use to talk about them don’t talk about them anymore. While records like prince and Bowie will have guaranteed value for another 50 years because all the people living today who still know and think about them. When it comes to the value of records aside from your own enjoyment from listening to them, it’s exactly like that quote they say about nothing really does until the last person to remember it dies. So I really hope a renaissance happens for prog psych and garage, the kind that reinvigorates the value. Personally I don’t like really long or weird songs I can barely handle Pink Floyd yea I know I’m getting g worse by the second here but these things I am saying, are not completely idiotic. Just saying.
@londonrecordlover9659 ай бұрын
If you have a mindset of value generation I am a little surprised you are interested in vinyl records at all! Even at the extremes of collectibility these are not really high value items, let’s be honest. The most valuable records in the world (bar a few outliers) are worth a lot less than the cheapest new car you could buy. Hopefully the music brings you some rewards as well!

@@londonrecordlover965 oh yes the musical rewards for me are spinning remasters and reissues or sentimental ones like my grandpas records and having my 1st special this and that pressings as well of them, like I love listening to Sgt pepper and I love having a super nice 1st UK with all the bells just to look at and watch appreciate in value while getting different versions to actually listen to. You’re right that won’t buy me a new car but I think several collections of full discographies in near mint are worth getting serious about like a Beatles one a Rolling Stones one a Led Zeppelin one or a ..Pink Floyd one. Interested to know your thoughts on a phenomenon I’ve noticed on Discogs: rare (but not super rare) records - maybe ones where there’s 5-10 copies for sales max around the world, and every copy is priced at double or more what anyone has ever paid before. You mention it in here, and it grabbed my attention because it drives me crazy. All these sellers thinking they can price at twice what anyone has ever paid and then, often, I see those records just sit, and sit, and sit for months and months not selling. Its infuriating all these sellers seemingly trying to rip people off, and simultaneously denying themselves the actual sale they’d get if they priced more reasonably.

Dishing hate at a vinyl community channel from within the vinyl community is just ignorant. You have made a hobby into a career which is ultimate joy. I know because in past I achieved this for some time. I may never be there again but I'm not down on people who are doing well. I celebrate your success because I understand it. Sleepless nights go into building a business but the thrill of the hunt is part of the drive. You have your youth and so much opportunity that you've been blessed with. Just enjoy how amazing that is.

I love finding rare xian psych in the dollar bins. A lot of it goes for over $200 a record, but usually not the ones that I find however it's very interesting and pleasant. I have a 300 song playlist in my account here. Private prices of very fun category to collect.

Hey Dylan, do you have expectations to grow the collection or do you want to keep it around the same size? I mean, im saying because of your comment that "you gotta have the common records that inspired those bands". Unlike you, I dont have many rare records but I have lots and lots of the common ones, say black sabbath, led zep, deep purple, grand funk, ccr, lynyrd, alman bros, pink floyd, genesis, yes, gentle giant, van der graaf, elp, king crimson, and so on. I also have lots of funk, soul, jazz, classical, mostly common stuff like the ones i mentioned. In your case, because you have a record store, if you keep all the common stuff and also the rare stuff.. how is it that you avoid having a huge collection that will take a huge space in your house?

This kind of coincides with something I always think about. People love to hate popular bands. It's because those bands and songs have been so pervasive throughout the years. But that shouldn't negate the fact that they are great bands and great songs. The Eagles, being one example, get a lot of hate and I understand that they were well produced and maybe a little overproduced. But if you were to listen to the songs with an open mind, if an unknown band had made those songs and were recently being discovered, they would be touted as an underrated lost treasure.
@vinylmandate9 ай бұрын
The hate could also be directed at Don Henley for being a complete ass about the "fair use" (a legal designation) of Eagles songs, going so far as to personally submitting take down orders for even a couple seconds of an Eagles song on YT. He is why if you've ever tried to sing an Eagles song at Karaoke night the versions available are not made by the main companies that produce the licensed karaoke versions (and do a damn god job since they have in house musicians record the tracks so they sound exactly like the originals but without the lead vocals). If they do have any it's some bootleg unlicensed version that sucks. And there was that tine when police were called to his house by a naked 16 yo girl who overdosed on qualudes and cocaine along with a 15 yo girl also taking (being given?) drugs. So there are many reasons to hate anything with Henley's stink on it other than the Eagles popularity.

Thanks for the great video. Very, very well said. I love seeing other people get excited about finding a rare record or others get excited about finding a record with music they love. I hope you keep sharing your great finds. I've learned so much about music I've never heard of before from you. "better" is such a subjective term. People buy records for different reasons. For some, it's about the music and only the music. So if that's you're perspective then the Allman Brothers record is "better" than the Farm record like you said. But, this is also a collecting hobby as well. Is a 1922 George Washington 1c stamp (worth $16,000) "better" than a current Forever stamp you can buy at the post office for $0.68 today? If you're trying to mail a letter then no, it's not. But if you are a collector then yes it is to that collector. I wish that others wouldn't demean people who value things for different reasons.

I think that ultimately it just comes down to the music. Yeah, while owning a Beatles butcher cover album or a Led Zep teal lettering cover is cool, all of that stuff is not going to change what comes out of the speakers when the needle hits the groove. Still the same songs. As far as obscure ultra-rare albums go, a whole lot of them just aren’t that great musically. There is a reason for their obscurity. On the other hand, some didn’t catch on at the time but were actually good or great and grew followings later because of that. But once again, that’s due to the musical content rather than anything else. I love hunting down obscure 60’s garage band music. There is a lot of sound-alike junk, but there is also a lot of amazing stuff that didn’t get its day in the sun the first time around. It just depends on the music.

Chad implied to me about a year ago on one of his videos that a Humble Pie record was possibly coming. I offered my stone mint Rock On promo for him to use for a potential sound guide for a release and he said “not that one”. Hopefully there is a UHQR of Smokin an under rated band and record.

If you love the music/artist, the record/CD is worth any price. If I don't think I will like/love it, it will not personally have any value to me. To some, records/discs are like gold and have future value. But to me, the music is what makes me feel good and there is no price on that.

You are in that stage of record collecting where there is no surprise and need the deep rare stuff. You need to go to Europe and go hunting
@jch25142249 ай бұрын
I don’t think you are flexing your collection at all. It’s just the stuff the drives you to find more unique groups and artists. I like to come across an album and artist I have no clue who it is. Sample it and go wow I think I’ll take a shot at this one. Many new artists I found were in $1 bins or thrift store finds. I’m drawn to interesting album covers and have hit on some really cool stuff that way. Some of my favorite finds are not exactly the best overall sounding vinyl record. But it’s mine and I’m happy to have cause I found something during the hunt that I never knew was out there.
