In my experience every insane record collectors favorite record is “the next record.” But what I’m coming to terms with is you can’t own more records than time. What’s the point of having all the grails I want if I can’t listen and be intimately familiar with them. I do try, when I start obsessing on what I need next is to just enjoy what I already have. It’s insane how often you rediscover stuff you filed and it’s like getting something new for free!

Your videos have also introduced me to artists that I had never heard of before. Overall just a great resource for record collectors, new and old. I'm 53 years old and grew up on vinyl. My older brother introduced me to some great bands as a kid and I remember walking down to the Music Forum (Record store that was in Gardner, MA), and thumbing through the records...spending my allowance on a new 45 or saving up enough until I could get the latest release from Pink Floyd, Kansas, Aerosmith, etc.. Your videos remind me of the talks with my bro. Keep it up.

There's definitely some obscure and rare stuff that I really love, but a lot of my absolute favorite albums are fairly common and luckily weren't super expensive. I have a lot of I want, and though I could fairly complete much of my wishlist on the Discogs marketplace, I totally agree about the thrill of the hunt! Tower of Power made incredible funk albums that are better than most of the obscure funk around. I love collecting the obscure stuff and the rush of finding that stuff is why I love hunting! I like how you place a lot of these rare records in the context of the major bands of their era & genre that they were trying to emulate. It's the same way with rare garage 45s. There are a lot of bands trying to be the next version of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Yardbirds etc. etc., but even when they're imitative, they can't always imitate it perfectly & that's where the individuality creeps in.

Hi Dillon, really interesting video. It reminded me of another video you did not long ago which was something like your 10 most-played or favourite records. And I was thinking, because it was you, it would be 10 records I’d never heard of. So it was fascinating that you were still picking out Zeppelin and Floyd etc, despite the hundreds of obscure records you have publicised on your channel. Because it showed that, however much you pan for gold outside of the obvious pool of great bands, there is a reason why those bands sold millions of records - Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Dylan - they are the pinnacle and there is not an ‘undiscovered’ band which is their equal. Which is not to say there isn’t a ton of great, less well known music out there to be discovered - there is. In fact it would be an interesting exercise one day to count how many different artists are comprised within my record collection! But to your point - let’s not kid ourselves that Frijid Pink is better than Led Zep II. To pretend otherwise is just inverted snobbery. Great topic for a few beers down the pub, shame you’re on the other side of the world! Greetings from London.

I’ve been buying tapes since I was like 10 and records since I was maybe 14; I’m 50 now. It’s always been about the music initially but as I got older I got more into “original” pressings. In the 90s the market wasn’t flooded with reissues so often the “original” pressings were your only option. Thankfully they weren’t so expensive as they are now but were trickier to find before the dawn of eBay and discogs. Anyway I’ve made lots of money over the years on grails I’ve found cheaply in the wild so I don’t mind if I drop 4 figures on a really nice clean Blue Note once in awhile. If you put your OG FARM on side-by-side with the repress you did, would you be able to tell the difference in sound between the two? I am 100% on board with having original pressings and the thrill of having them, but on a budget, I usually go for the cheaper repress and just assume my ears won't know the difference. My hesitation with the represses is that you never know how the mix was done and I'm pretty sure more than a couple that I've bought are just rips from a crappy FLAC file or digital version pressed onto vinyl.

9:47 - Woah! I was just thinking of this one, on something you said about the previous one. Last time I heard of a copy going for a crazy amount was $500 for the exact same 1st pressing. And i would hope that is in close to mint condition as it gets. Maybe because they are the local band. But i have wondered if geography comes down to it. Sure, it may be a rare record here. But is it that rare in Sydney, Australia? And would it be in some dollar bin in decent enough shape there. Which brings up, which version is rare? The original Fonthill pressing. Or the reissued version on London Records that has the different album cover and the re-recording of Rock Star / Flaggit (this is also the same recordings on the single) But I guess what I am getting at is maybe just a thing that happens here. But sometimes I wonder just how the store works here. Seems like anything rare you shown, would be in the dollar bins. Because no one cares about "obscure album title here" and no one is gonna buy that. But they will definitely buy the white album of the white album. So it's all down to titles. Something I always wanted to do was walk in with 5 or 10 records that are worth 1000's and see what they would say. Probably get anywhere from $5 to $10. Because no one wants or knows "title" and goes right into the cheap bins. Just because its not some big name title.

@@noblerecords Thank you so much. I heard these were (re-)released individually, but I totally missed that Clouds Hill dropped them as a box set. Very unfortunate for me I own the Mars Volta box (which is 99% great), and I just found myself having ordered this behemoth, fomo galore. There goes the holiday money...

This video took me a while to watch cuz I saw Grand Funk in the back and had to go listen to Inside Looking Out before I could continue.

Interested to know your thoughts on a phenomenon I’ve noticed on Discogs: rare (but not super rare) records - maybe ones where there’s 5-10 copies for sales max around the world, and every copy is priced at double or more what anyone has ever paid before. You mention it in here, and it grabbed my attention because it drives me crazy. All these sellers thinking they can price at twice what anyone has ever paid and then, often, I see those records just sit, and sit, and sit for months and months not selling. Its infuriating all these sellers seemingly trying to rip people off, and simultaneously denying themselves the actual sale they’d get if they priced more reasonably.

Clearly you're doing something right Dillon🤘 i wouldn't worry too much about any flakk you might get at this point. I can tell you that when I saw/heard you mention Fraction, Moonblood popped into my brain real quick. I sure as hell didn't learn that anywhere but here

Thanks for the great video. Very, very well said. I love seeing other people get excited about finding a rare record or others get excited about finding a record with music they love. I hope you keep sharing your great finds. I've learned so much about music I've never heard of before from you. "better" is such a subjective term. People buy records for different reasons. For some, it's about the music and only the music. So if that's you're perspective then the Allman Brothers record is "better" than the Farm record like you said. But, this is also a collecting hobby as well. Is a 1922 George Washington 1c stamp (worth $16,000) "better" than a current Forever stamp you can buy at the post office for $0.68 today? If you're trying to mail a letter then no, it's not. But if you are a collector then yes it is to that collector. I wish that others wouldn't demean people who value things for different reasons.

That's very good advice, I don't mind a decent reissue, I will pay a lot for a record if it's the only way to get it as I did with Bacamarte.

I kind of have this philosophy even for reissues of my most wanted records. To me, a quality reissue at $700 to 800 less would probably be a good deal to me because the originals are dang near impossible to find. But it's the thrill of the hunt to find one mispriced in storage or hiding in a stack of $1 records.

I get it, i collect also old records but recently i descovered a new band called "mouth" which should be checked out by anyone interested in old school rock like uriah heep, black sabbath, led zep etc. I get that people say "that new band sounds just like this or that" but also it is not easy to create new music with the same instruments and as soon as it sounds similar to something more popular they are called a rip off. In the end i dont care if they got inspired by old bands, as long as they create something new for the era nowadays. Btw congrats for the collaboration with analogue productions😁🥳

How did you get an original copy of Population II without the cut-out hole? Did you get that direct from Randy Holden himself or were there other sources? I have seen an original Population II at a record show once, but it had a cut-out hole & I was told all surviving copies had cut-out holes, because the record came out when the Hobbit record label that issued it completely collapsed financially.

Dishing hate at a vinyl community channel from within the vinyl community is just ignorant. You have made a hobby into a career which is ultimate joy. I know because in past I achieved this for some time. I may never be there again but I'm not down on people who are doing well. I celebrate your success because I understand it. Sleepless nights go into building a business but the thrill of the hunt is part of the drive. You have your youth and so much opportunity that you've been blessed with. Just enjoy how amazing that is.

Been watching a long time now and been wondering if you have "common" hard rock albums in your collection like Starz,Legs Diamond,Piper,Airborne,Angel, etc. Never have heard you mention them but they kick as much ass (or more) than some of the rare stuff. What I've also found through the years is that many of the "grails" are highly over hyped. Many of the ones I mentioned actually kick their asses.

Do you have the 1st two Steve Miller Bands albums? Great psych records along with the pre Joker era. I’m discovering it now. PS: ARMAGEDDON ! everyone should have it

Chad implied to me about a year ago on one of his videos that a Humble Pie record was possibly coming. I offered my stone mint Rock On promo for him to use for a potential sound guide for a release and he said “not that one”. Hopefully there is a UHQR of Smokin an under rated band and record.

Hey Dylan, Ned again, are you also into the South American bands like the various Luis Alberto Spinetta bands, Pappo, Color Humano, the Shakers and the awesome Totem. I swear you had a copy of Laghonia did I imagine that ?

What I've always told people, "Holy Grail is only significant if you actually like it!" I used to get so annoyed of people that would tell me, "OMG..you have to own this/that album!" My reply would be, "why, I don't like that artist/band, why would I buy an album of theirs?" Owning an album just to "own an album" to me is the most ridiculous thing ever!? I don't own one album by Steely Dan, I never cared for them. They bore me to death! I understand their significance and influence, and if they're your thing, grab every album they made. But I do not feel the need to own an "original copy of Aja bc someone else tells me how awesome it is!" What I get off on is finding a "rare " album to me, that is listed for like $10, bc it was a band/artist that I really liked, but they weren't hugely successful, most people didn't listen to it/know about it, so if you find a copy of it, it's usually in a discount bin! Love your videos..keep up the great work!

Hey Dylan, do you have expectations to grow the collection or do you want to keep it around the same size? I mean, im saying because of your comment that "you gotta have the common records that inspired those bands". Unlike you, I dont have many rare records but I have lots and lots of the common ones, say black sabbath, led zep, deep purple, grand funk, ccr, lynyrd, alman bros, pink floyd, genesis, yes, gentle giant, van der graaf, elp, king crimson, and so on. I also have lots of funk, soul, jazz, classical, mostly common stuff like the ones i mentioned. In your case, because you have a record store, if you keep all the common stuff and also the rare stuff.. how is it that you avoid having a huge collection that will take a huge space in your house?

I love Blue Cheer - I have loved them since I got a copy through one of those get 12 for 2.99 and buy only six more for five times retail. Actually they also killed you on the shipping. I have managed to collect promos copies of all their first four albums including a mono wlp copy of Vincebus Eruptum. I have most of the Mainstream garage/psych lps and the only ones that may be as good as the early Blue Cheer recordings is Lincoln St. Exit and Josefus.
