Are Featured Servers BAD for Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

Featured servers are the backbone of online play on Minecraft Bedrock Edition, and they're promoted and supported by Microsoft and Mojang. However, there are also other servers on Bedrock as well, known as non featured servers, which can be played on Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, Minecraft Pocket Edition (known as MCPE), but not consoles, such as Xbox, PS4/PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Given that the majority of the playerbase CAN play on non-featured servers though, one begins to wonder if featured servers are anti-competitive, and if Minecraft featured servers are killing off other, less popular servers. I explore these questions in this video, talk about why it's not exactly simple to start a server from scratch on MCBE, visit some non-featured servers from a range of categories like pay-to-win skyblock and prisons and some Minecraft Bedrock Hypixel ripoffs, and discuss whether Bedrock featured servers are hindering the development and progress of non-featured servers. All of this Minecraft commentary, over some RTX shader cinematics, Minecraft server gameplay, and some Hive Skywars as well.

While I don’t think it’s bad, there might be a problem if you’re trying to make a Bedrock server. With making a server comes funding, and why fund a really good server if no one will play on it because it doesn’t have Mojang’s support? I mean, why put funding into a server that’ll grab almost no players? I could be wrong but I think it’s interesting. Really well made video Potato.

I saw my server in the first minute and I was scared to be bullied but thank you for saying that my server is great 😂 EDIT: but as a server owner even though we don't have plans on being featured, imo it is unfair ONLY for those external servers that are actually good and has good quality wish they could at least make an application and requirements that are hard so they can differentiate good and bad on external servers and so those people that are actually interested on being featured can put their effort into it

i have an idea that might not be good but its just a thought: what ALL servers were on the server list and it could have a sorting system like from most players to least and vice versa (kinda like the sorting system in the marketplace). you could also favorite a server so it shows up at the top no matter what. again just a thought

Just a dumb idea but maybe they should have a tab for servers u choose to play on and another for featured servers. Might take up more space or just decrease the tab size, which could be a bit of a downside for mobile players, but having the featured servers be the first thing and in ur face, especially for children, who make up like 85 percent of the bedrock playerbase, really encourages you to play on those rather than go out and look for other bedrock servers. Mojang might make the featured servers tab extra shiny or bigger but id think thatd be a bit of an improvement over what we have now.

I’ve built for a myriad of servers throughout my life. From servers like LifeBoat to the smaller servers; one of them being Advancius. In my opinion you didn’t really give the server a fair shake, it’s been around forever; just went through a player boom,and is quite the opposite of pay to win garbage. The UI and plugs are coded by the devs, builds are done in house, features are voted on by the community, and the donor ranks give mostly visuals or just more things to play around with which are usually worse than the free to play kits. Heck even fly in the hub can be earned rather quickly, and with a seven tier prestige system one that you can’t buy into, the only way to rank up is to actually play, which would be the opposite of pay to win. You should give it an actual review instead of spending thirteen minutes there and trying to pass judgment.

Actually the long term game space including skyblock (i know featured servers have that though like a hypixel like format with more features and functions)/factions /vanilla and even off road modes like pixelmon,lifesteal,anarchy etc thus if a server offers this play experience then it sure has great potential

In my perspective, the only unfair thing about featured servers is how some servers with 'lower quality' (Pixel Paradise *ahem*) are featured there just because it is a quick cashgrab for Microsoft, and other non-featured servers with better content is neglected since it equals no quick money.

You mentioned how non-featured servers are at the bottom of the servers list, i see it as less of an issue but a simple solution is put the add server button at the top, and organise all servers from most played to least played, so adding non-featured servers is less of a hassle. You also touched on servers being unoriginal, not only is it mojangs fault, but the people who make it an issue for themselves.

I definitely agree with potato's viewpoint as it is spot on, however something that wasn't mentioned in this video is that Mojang gives featured servers access to a special edition of the game to help with server development. It gives way more insight into functionality of the game that isn't otherwise available to the public. I feel that's not very fair and as a result featured servers will continue to be miles ahead of smaller communities. That's why we quit Bedrock altogether and moved to Java.

If some of the people watching didn’t know, you can make the Minecraft server’s tab a lot less infuriating by installing a resource pack (FoxyNoTail made a great one) which essentially hides all the featured servers, leaving only the ones you chose to put on your list. You can still add the featured servers that you actually care about by using their IP addresses and adding them like any other non-featured server (Hive, Galaxite, and Cubecraft can all be added using their IP addresses and I’m pretty sure every other server can). My favorite part about this is that the servers don’t pop up in a random inconsistent order (like the featured servers would, which was really annoying), but instead they show up in the order I last played them just like on Java edition. And of course I don’t have to waste my time scrolling through servers I have no intention to play on like pixel paradise and mineville. Hopefully I was able to help someone :)

I feel like they are required unless minecraft makes getting into servers easier on certain versions of the game. You have to do a lot of messing around just to get it on switch and idk how bad it is on other platforms but I doubt it’s much better aside from windows 10 and PE.

Zeqa is a popular server because it was made by a KZbinr with 50k?+ subscribers and simply got bigger because of the word of mouth amongst creators. Other “Hypixel rip off” servers get a decent amount of players because of videos like this (good or bad) giving them exposure, therefore leading them to get more players who simply don’t care. My issue here is the fact that they refuse to add the ability to join non featured servers to the likes of Xbox and PlayStation where I assume a large majority of their player base come from. Yeah some have in game purchases but how else are they meant to make income (talking about the fair ones here). I personally like the idea of featured servers because easy access, but I wish they’d make it more fair.

6:00 please don't run from comboes it's disrespectful but that's not what Im trying to say tho.. basically one of the main reasons why Zeqa isn't a featured server is because it's identical to a couple java servers, aka minemen lunar esta ect... It's a practice server with region selectors and it also has the exact same gamemodes. And there's other servers that are similar to Zeqa like vasar (that broke down unfortunately), and ectary so this video isn't fully in-depth but it's way more in-depth than others I've found. I give this a solid 9/10 with just some missing information but gives the right idea. Nice video!

The problem is not featured servers exist but that a large portion of the player base is restricted to only ever being able to play on featured servers. Mojang or Microsoft could have probably pretty easily added a dedicated server browser to help with discoverability for third party servers like has been seen on many older multiplayer games but lets for instance take Gmod as an example where basically any experience you will have with that game comes from just finding different servers on the server browser and there are tags and things like that so player can search for the experience that THEY want to have. My second problem with how servers are on bedrock is realms, my experience with realms on bedrock has been unimpressive to say the least. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it provides the bare minimum I would expect from a payed hosting service. I hate that the only way to have a Minecraft server that I can play with my Xbox friends on that also doesn't require the host to always be on the server requires paying Microsoft. I know how to and am capable of hosting bedrock servers the the dedicated server tool but sadly Microsoft decided to give a big FU to the player base and restrict them from joining dedicated servers without having to go through an annoying and inconvenient work around to have an xbox believe that the server is actually hosting on the LAN. If you want to play with console players your own server you are forced to pay for realms which provide almost no actual server config options, and have very restrictive player limits. Want to play with Eleven other people???? No your not allowed to. Want to have a simulation distance more than four chunks???? Nah be to difficult to implement. Want to increase the render distance so you can actually see the new 1.18 terrain or maybe actually see those mountains in the distance???? No not within Microsoft budget. Want to play on an older version of the game???? Nah, who in the Minecraft community would ever want to play on an older version of the game absolutely absurd. The problem with servers on bedrock is the Microsoft has locked everything behind a paywall and has then also taken away peoples options and it makes me so annoyed every time I play on bedrock because it could genuinely be the better version of the game if it got more love from its developers and wasn't being constantly squeezed by Microsoft for every last penny from the Bedrock community. Oh and I hope Microsoft gets sued over the market place because they are flagrantly profiting off of copyright infringement and they clearly have put no effort into stopping that , it must be illegal for them to knowing allow it (since copyright infringement seemly makes up most of the market place) even if they technically say that studios shouldn't. anyway sorry for my long rambling post but the state of bedrock edition really annoys me because almost every single problem on it seems to be a direct result of Microsoft's influence on it.

Featured severs were amazing before all platforms United to bedrock. It’s so sad that many servers including my personal favorite (brokenlens) have been pushed down because of the featured server feature. It doesn’t make sense to me why they had to do this. The only server I enjoyed was hive, because mineplex was dying out, lifeboat and cubecraft basically killed themselves (bad combat, lag) and no one cares about pixel paradise or inpvp. In fact inpvp and lifeboat were way better before becoming featured. Now that Mojang/Microsoft gets to decide who can make profits and who can’t, it truly is unfair and it must be spoken out by more bedrock yters, even if bedrock isn’t the main or best platform.

I think it’s a good and bad. Sometimes it may get confusing and might cost more for the owners. But it’s also more people to play with and overall a better experience. It might slow down some business for smaller servers and get slower money incomes. I was gonna write an intelligent comment about how ecpe is a great factions/prisons/skyblocks server that is underrated. But then I realized the community is filled with auto clicking, toxic sixteen year olds and the owner is like 25 years old and is childish as hell. Not only this but the helpers/mods+ are extremely biased and the way they choose them are also biased as well. If you want to keep brain cells and not face autoclickers that don’t get banned because they are friends with the staff then I don’t recommend ecpe.

A good idea for Mojang, is to add a link tk the website where other server can be found! This will make it so if a new player joins Bedrock they can check out other servers from the website! If Mojang can't find a good server website, they could make there own!!!

I dont think its bad really, but not 100 percent good. Some servers like hive and cubecraft deserve to be featured, they are there for a reason. But mineville and lifeboat are worse than lots of non featured servers. No hate to these serverd but you should be able to apply to become a featured server. Featured servers should also be reviewed to see if they are doing as well as mojang first thought. Some featured servers have many non featured servers that do what they do but better. I definitely agree with potato in saing zeqa is very good. It has potential but only could attract the pvp community. This is just my opinion and i think potato explained stuff well. Nice vid

Nether Games is my favorite even though they lost a ton of players in late 2020 due to a whole server revamp. Also Nether Games is to try hard to become featured its like 87% pc 13% controller and 3% touch. Hive and Cubecraft are so well divided

I dont think its really unfair but there is some bias at microsoft regarding which servers get featured (for example pixel paradise, lifeboat,mineville)
