Building self sustaining floating cities (with capacity of 50,000) each is a good altrnative for land scarce and for this matter sea area scarcity in Singapore. it has to consider the impact on the under water eco system it also has to consider the impact of the commercial shipping lane that handles thousands of ship daily.

I am certainly impressed with Singapore's ability to find new solutions to old problems but the real problem they need to find a solution too is the demand to continuously grow. They should learn when enough is enough and develop a means to maintain a successful society without seeking constant growth.

Ocean engineering materials is a tough dilemma. Sea water is basically 'life paste', where if you stick something in the ocean, stuff will grow on it, and often into it. Then there's the corrosion of sea water itself, especially at the oxygenated 'lapping' level. Things get ugly quickly when you stick them in the ocean, unless it's coated in something toxic. It's fine to put on virtual reality goggles and have hope, perhaps, but there's a massive lack of practicality without a materials and maintenance discussion. It's the difference between an investment scam and an investment, or waste versus progress.

This conjures other architectural ideas, especially the recently recurring theme of forests in skyscrapers. Graphic artists turn city planners by pasting fanciful ideas onto photos of cities. (It worked for science fiction book covers.) Ignoring the lack of space for root systems in most images, vegetation also requires lots of water; water has high mass; these 'forest buildings' would be simultaneously over-built and under-built earthquake prone resource hogs. [When: Force = 1/2 * Mass * Velocity(^2), and you add an earthquake, that water suddenly acts really heavy with every ripple, and wants to take that building down.] Again, the heavy moisture would promote disintegration, require sterilization, while sucking large amounts of power to circulate the needed water, as they'd be upside-down waterfalls on hefty steel and concrete matrices.

SEE recent comment: That does not stop those older ships being completely refurbished to become luxury homes, malls, sports center, parks, educational centers, hospitals, play grounds, parks or working man's accommodations. These great ships that no longer have engines, but are now just movable containers can but parked on a grand marina suiting their refurbishment. Time is a cruel mistress and every ten years or so these ships need servicing but no problem, they are simply towed to a dry dock repaired refurbished & returned to their berth. Singapore could be a city of a thousand great ships that go no where. Imagine the tourist potential?

Singapore has been living on concrete literally. The tech for building into the sea , ‘floating’ on water. Roads and airports have been build over concrete slabs. Why not. Go for it. You can have garden high in the sky. What’s to stop building over water?

I agree, 100 years is not that long for large scale architecture. Sure it lasts for the lifetimes of the people who built it, but the following generations are left with a decaying heap. All this fancy new technology, we can't design a structure to last 500-1000 years or more? FFS, people thousands of years ago knew more about building things that last than we do. Bring back the megaliths!

The old London bridge (before it fell down) was built like this where the bridge had a market, 138 shops. multi-seated public latrines, an unknown number of private latrine it even had a palace and and a bloody church! and that was built in 1176.

In Singapore, we have an aging population and a shrinking population due to the lowest fertility rate in the world - 1.08. that means Each couple only has one child. I don't understand why in the first two sentences, they assert that Singapore is growing and we must have more land for people.

Singapore is a country of mixed races with a super potential but land is a problem. I don't know why all of those experts trying to find more space have not considered SHIPS. Around the world thousands of cruise, cargo, container ships have past their useful life on the sea. Much bigger ships are being designed but that does not stop those older ships being completly

One major drawback I see with these rooftop developments is that they neglect the opportunity incorporate built in solar systems into the developments. Such shortsightedness is a terrible waste of an opportunity. Utilizing solar in a new development's roof is far less costly than adding panels to an existing building.

well, personally i don't like the idea of building residential houses on the canal. first is because of landscape, a city for residents should not cover all its space with concrete; second, it is very humid when you live above water. you may visit those water city to see how the molds growing on the wall. this idea is more suitable for building vertical agriculture for sg

The future will be robotic, automation, AI and remotely operated devices. Hence, we do not need human intervention on most of the operation. And, most of the countries will be focusing on depopulation or the STOP AT TWO genocide policy to reduce their population. For example, a surgeon can operate on a patient in Singapore from London. Road vehicles are driverless etc.

I think floating cities are better than going deep underground, because it will disrupt water systems and require complex ventilation and water management. Why not have cruise ship style condos and rental apartments? There is plenty of water around Singapore.
