It's more of a cultural/linguistic trait than about what ppl truly believe or how they behave. The easiest conversation opener among Greeks is whining about something the government did or ;ament the direction the country is moving towards. Anyone who has entered a Greek taxi knows what I'm talking about.

Για να απαντήσεις σε αυτό το ερώτημα πρέπει να συγκρίνεις τις δυο Ελλάδες: την Ελλάδα πριν το 2009 και την Ελλάδα της κρίσης (2009-σήμερα). Η Ελλάδα των ‘90 και 00 ήταν μια χώρα με αφθονία, χρήμα, επιτυχίες σε πολλά επίπεδα και φυσικά ο κόσμος ήταν πολύ αισιόδοξος για το μέλλον. Εγώ σε εκείνη την Ελλάδα μεγάλωσα και θυμάμαι. Μετά το 2009 όλα άλλαξαν. Αργά και βασανιστικά η χώρα βυθίστηκε σε βαριά κρίση, μιζερια και κατάθλιψη ένιωσε η πλειοψηφία του κόσμου, πολλοί έχασαν τις δουλειες, τα σπίτια και πάνω από ολα την ελπίδα τους. Οι περισσότεροι νέοι (όπως κι εγώ) φύγαμε στο εξωτερικό. Μετα από 12 χρόνια οικονομικης παρακμης ΝΑΙ άλλαξε η νοοτροπία μας, γίναμε απαισιόδοξοι. Ειναι πραγματικά δύσκολο να παραμένεις αισιόδοξος όταν οι συνθήκες της ζωής σου και της κοινωνίας γύρω σου αλλάζουν τόσο δραματικά.

wow. that survey! Good point. Essential to understand the political-econonic reality cos otherwise the people gaslight themselves. This isn't making excuses, this is pointing out how important political awareness is, and in that Greece remains, as ever, one of the most powerful voices for social democracy. I think pessimism among Greeks is mostly a cultural trait inherited from older generations. This is projected in arts as well, most traditional or folk songs are extremely pessimistic for example, while most other arts are traditionally centered around pain and misery rather than hope. This goes further into our living world, look at how we treat our cities, for instance. I don't think economy has as much to do with it, since it was the same during the 90s, the so called good old PASOK days. It seems to be backed up by the graph posted in the video as well, seeing that most of the optimistic counties are actually among the poorest of EU while a lot of pessimistic countries are wealthy.

When you called to live with 550 euros salary you can be nothing but realistic not pessimist. Imagine to work In two jobs taking 1100 euros per month and your wife work in two works as well taking another 1100. Can you live with that if you pay rent and have two children?

Γεια σας και ευχαριστώ για τα εξαιρετικά βίντεο. Βελτιώνω τα ελληνικά μου και μου λείπει η Ελλάδα, λοιπόν εκτιμώ τα βίντεο. Θυμάμαι, ο Γ. Βαρουφάκης είπε ότι δεν έχει αισιοδοξία, κανένα, γιατί για να είναι αισιόδοξος χρειάζεται στοιχεία ότι η κατάσταση θα βελτιωθεί. Κάνει λοιπόν μια διάκριση μεταξύ της αισιοδοξίας και της ελπίδας: ακόμη και σε μια απαισιόδοξη κατάσταση, η ελπίδα είναι επιλογή. Δεν χρειάζεται να συμφωνεί πάντα με τον Βαρουφάκη, αλλά αυτό μου φάνηκε αληθινό!

@@EasyGreekVideos κακές πολιτικές ή πολιτικές που δεν φέρνουν θετικές αλλαγές, έχουν ως αποτέλεσμα να αυξάνουν τα ποσοστά απαισιοδοξίας. Γαλλία έχει τεράστιο κοινωνικό πολιτικό θέμα, όπως και η Ελλάδα, και η Ιταλία. Το Βέλγιο είναι μια ιδιαίτερη περίπτωση γιατί φαντάζομαι ανήκει στην κατηγορία των στασιμων πολιτικών. Το Βέλγιο είναι καλή χώρα, έχει παρα πολλα θετικά, αλλά παραμένει σταθερά έτσι όπως είναι με τα καλά και τα κακά, όποτε εφόσον κάτι καλύτερο δεν θα έρθει, άρα απαισιοδοξία.

Είναι δύσκολη ερώτηση, αλλά η αίσθηση μου είναι ότι μπροστά σε προβλήματα και δυσκολίες αντιδρούμε με μεγαλύτερη απαισιοδοξία, συγκριτικά π.χ. με πιο βόρειους λαούς. Πιθανή εξήγηση; Η αβεβαιότητα, το άγχος και ο φόβος που προκαλεί η έλλειψη ελέγχου της τύχης μας (θεωρία locus of control). Στην Ελλάδα, μπροστά στην αντιμετώπιση προβλημάτων, έχουμε μάθει να είμαστε ανήμποροι ή και ευθυνόφοβοι, στάσεις που μπορεί να οδηγούν σε όλα τα παραπάνω και σε απαισιοδοξία. Από την άλλη, η ευθυνοφοβία μπορεί να οδηγεί και σε ξενοιασιά. Και μαζί με τη ζεστασιά του ήλιου και της οικογένειας η διάθεση μας εξισορροπείται σε μεγάλο βαθμό.

Political and financial issues always have a way of playing around with people's mindsets and logistics. So even if the chart says that the Greeks are pessimists, we have to acknowledge the fact that the causes mentioned in the video are very difficult to defeat, and they will some way or another impact one's mindset and lifestyle. Our people are experiencing very similar issues, and the sanctions, foreign policies, and political pressures put on our people are not easing the situation either. P.S. Random fact: Appearance-wise, the young man at 2:52 has an eerily similarity to the depicted men in the early Greek mosaic art (paintings).

Why do you focus on the Cypriot guy? Not saying that Cypriots are any less Greeks than mainland Greeks, but they are an independent state and status there is different from the status of Greece

I don't really understand the question. We're not focusing on him more than on other interviewees.

He may be from Rhodes. They have an accent which is extremely similar to the Cypriot one. I am from Athens and when I went to Rhodes, initially I thought that it was full Cypriots who had decided to move there. The hotel receptionist, the museum employee at the entrance, the shop assistants, all sounded like Cypriots. And then I realised that they can't be all from Cyprus. This is when it became clear to me that the two accents are almost identical. Having said that, even if this interviewee is Cypriot, he can still give his opinion. He may have been living in Greece for the last few years and even if he hasn't, the bonds between the two states are very strong and he may be well aware of the current situation in Greece.

Εγώ θέλω να ξέρω τα κριτήρια και τα μέτρα που χρησιμοποίησαν για να φτιάξουν αυτό το γράφημα. Θέλω να μάθω πώς ορίζουν το αισιόδοξο και το απαισιόδοξο. Αυτές οι χώρες από πάνω δεν θεωρούνται αισιόδοξες , είναι βασικα αδιάφορες .Μεγάλη διαφορά. Εγώ πιστεύω ότι εμείς οι έλληνες είμαστε παθιασμένοι και ανοιχτοί. Επίσης είμαστε ειλικρινείς και ευθύς. Μάλλον για μερικούς αυτό θα μεταφράστει αρνητικά. Στο κάτω κάτω ξέρουμε τι είμαστε και δε χρειαζόμαστε ένα γράφημα να το αποδείξουμε . Παρόλα αυτά είναι μια ενδιαφέρουσα συζήτηση . 👍🏻

I'm a guy from one of those countries of the top of the list. Do not take it as an offence, but, unfortunately, Greeks you are very, very pessimistic. Having lived 8 years in GR I never understood why though. You have it all - sun, sea, food, scenery, music and art. It's something deep in your mentality or way of thinking, language restrains perhaps. As P. Yogananda put it once: Mediterranean anger shielded with volcanic smiles. It is simple maths. Minimum wage in Greece is 550 euros per month for 40 hours work per week. Average is 1000 euros. 3 million get pention under 500 euros. From 2010 to 2020 population has reduced half a million (500000) because deaths are more than births. Not mention immigration. In the top of that things will be worse due to eurozone policy implemented to Greece.

I have lived in Germany canada and Switzerland i think the most of the people there are very pessimist 3 rich country's i think is a mater of how you see life with what people you have to do my opa said to me the life is not ugly is not beautiful it's that what you want to be he lived 2 world wars and a civil war he died and his last saying was it was a wonderful trip my life
