Are High Voltage LiPo Batteries Worth it? (LiHV)

Hi Ryan, From what I've heard, the high-voltage cells have a shorter lifespan than the normal lipo cells. That wouldn't come as a surprise: traditional cells are better understood and mass produced, and, maybe more important: higher self voltage leads to faster degradation. That's why the LiFePo cells (at least the well made by A123) were so durable. And why you should keep your LiPo cells in storage mode (at lower voltage) = lower charge level) when you don't use them.

Hey Karl, That is an excellent point that you have made. The LiFePo cells were those most durable lithium based cell I have used. I do also talk about storage voltage of LiPo batteries in another video.

@@RCexplained Hi Ryan, yes, the A123 were the most robust cells ever. I still use them (bought them 10 years ago or so) Thing is, as you pointed out in a different video, I don't like to have different voltages in my battery collection... most annoying thing is to disable the lipo protection every time I use the LiFePos.

Of you have a 4s car that is mental on 4s but a little bit too slow on 3s these could be a good option.

If you are a speedrun guy then theres no other way to go but LiHV or you are behind its simple. Other applications then its not really that much of an improvement, too much heat for racing usually banned.

I use the lihv in my 3d plane. Standard lipos struggle to prop hold but i switched to lihv and it will climb out untill its dead

Right on. As long as it works for you. Some applications may require that extra punch.

In your experience do LiHv packs give more run time than a LiPo pack? I accidentally ended up with LiHv packs over LiPo (purchasing 2nd hand off a friend), and made the assumption that LiHv gave longer run times rather than overall performance gain in terms of power / punch. I haven't done back to back performance / power comparisons between charging my LiHv 4s packs to 16.80v (LiPo) instead of 17.4v (liHV), but I can't say I've noticed a massive performance difference when I charge them to Hv, but I am glad of the extra run time they seem to give me.

Theoretically they can give more run time but you'd have to change your driving style completely to see an approximate 3.7% difference at best.

In my experience, the Hi voltaje Lipo packs have a short lifespan, his internal resistance goes up very quicly (couple of docens of cycles), and, in a particular case of the Turnigy Bolt that you used in the presentation it puffed up like nothing. I hardly not recommend his use. It doesn't worth.

That's a good point. It sounds like at the end of the day its just not worth it.

Thanks for the comment! These batteries will increase the RPM from your motor (translates to vehicle speed) as long as you select batteries that can maintain their voltage under the load you draw from them.

Hello Ryan, I'm new to your channel, great content! I have a question for you, have you heard about overclocking an ESC? I have an e-skateboard "36v ESC substitute" which I'm planning to turn into a trolling motor for my inflatable boat and I guess I'll have to modify it so it could handle more current (amps). My motor has 280kv and rated for over 2kw Esc wattage specs are unknown.

Hi Eden, thank you for your comment. I've overclocked my desktop PC' s CPU but never heard of this for a Brushless ESC. How do you know you have to modify the ESC to handle more current?

Thanks for your reply, I'm going for the cheap so I can first build my prototype. Two years of online research indicates that higher current is needed to be able to move my boat to my desired speed and requires 2-3kw ie at least 55A continuous at 36v. I'm also interested in building a jet-surfboard, check out "Youngster's Jets" channel I'm sure you gonna love it!

If your ESC can not deliver 55A of continuous power, I would not be able to recommend how to push the ESC beyond its thermal limit. I will check out the channel, thanks.

Definately not worth it. maybe in a competition, but good grief they dont last! I got 10 flights from my batteries now, and I feel how my lihv's are dying. my normal lipos? nah, they are going strong and they are way older! I always charge 0.02v lower than the full charged voltage, and I dont fly to less than 3.25v on my woops. during use I dont let them get hot. just warm. it's not like I'm abusing my cells. they are generally just.... awful, with a very specific use case that everyone is ignoring and standardizing extremely bad lifespan.
