My collegiate wrestling coach said, “the best way to get in wrestling shape is to wrestle.” I find the same is true for Jiu Jitsu. But, I cannot train many days a week anymore, so I find that in between Jiu Jitsu days, I lift weights and do cardio on a Bowflex max trainer (sort of a combination between a stairmaster and elliptical). I don’t do any interval training, but I go pretty hard for about 30 mins on the cardio. Takes awhile to get into that sort of groove. For weights, I prefer to do more of a German volume training method, where you do eccentric training. It helps a lot with muscular endurance and joint stability/health. At 41 years old, and having grappled for 30 years, I’ve had my fair share of wear and tear, but I still have a huge gas tank. I have to be smarter these days-especially if I want to train for another 20 years. Keep rolling my friends.
@christopherpakney85423 жыл бұрын
I hit the rowing machine and set up long duration intervals 4 days a week. 25 minutes with a 15 second increase in cadence (go all out or just really pick up the pace) every minute on the minute. That 45 second rest seems like 10 seconds after about the 4th or 5th round. Zero impact, long steady state heart rate with HIIT spikes. It will wear you out, but if I do it first thing in the AM I can still roll later that night. Plus the motion is lotion to the joints at 45 years old. Works out the stiffness over the whole body. Love the rower.
@josephbreza-grappling94593 жыл бұрын
@@christopherpakney8542 funny thing is, I was reading my response here from 9 months ago and I don’t really train like that so much anymore. I’ve changed up somethings. I got into the intervals for cardio and it really helps. 1/2 a minute on full blast, recover, rinse and repeat 10x. In terms of lifting, I’ve experimented with lifting for power but it’s just not good for these joints. So, I prefer 15 rep range or so, but with enough volume to sufficiently tax the muscles. That definitely helps with muscular strength and endurance on the mat. At this point, it’s all about longevity. Keep up the good work

@gedforrest25474 жыл бұрын
Chewy this is absolutely spot on! Even though it sounds like you've just come to this through personal experience, there is actually loads of good quality scientific research to back up what you're saying. At the elite level of pretty much every cardio-based sport (Swimming, Running, Cycling, Rowing, you name it), all athletes do "Low Intensity Steady State" (or Zone 2 training) as the majority of their work. Anything harder than this produces too much fatigue which decreases the total volume of training that you can do over the long term, and lowers the quality of your "hard" workouts (which for BJJ should be hard rolling).

I've been a long distance runner for a very long time. Since before HIIT had a name. That has given me tremendous aerobic endurance and very fast recovery time. As for HIIT, it's fine, but nothing replaces distance for having a very high V02 max. Besides, what you say about rolling or martial arts training, meaning active sparring, that's pretty good HIIT right there. I also did the Stairmaster at high speed when those were popular.
@omardiangeloarteaga48754 жыл бұрын
A lot of people doesnt understsnd that a good aerobic base is fundamental. The aerobic engine takes part in all 3 energy sistems. For a good baseline You need More aerobic outside the sparring to have good base and improve recovery.and in other day do your anaeróbic alactic work Out. A ratio 1 second exercise 6 seconds rest to improve explosivity. Doing sparring you do a lot of anaeróbic lactic system. More hiit after 2 or 3 days rollings a week would burn your Nervous central system. We can do some hiit anaeróbic lactic from 8 weeks to competittion till 3/2 weeks. Hey I really relate to this - I used to do very long distance running before I began bjj (3.5 years now). I have kept up a lot of running throughout my training dense schedule, but often it only exacerbates injury. I have been having great results cutting down outside cardio to just the stationary bike (not for long, 30 min daily), lifting/band exercises spread out throughout the day to keep my muscles/ligaments awake and of course a shit ton of rolling. The second year of bjj I was getting injured like every other month and it was in large part to running imo

They introduced a beginner curriculum for 10 weeks - saying you have to attend those or be blue belt or higher to attend the advanced class that is right after. My Professor is wonderful and said no you’re not brand new - you can attend advanced classes. Here’s the question - I absolutely need the basics still. All of them. I need those ten weeks. If you were me, would you attend both classes back to back? I’m scared of overtraining injuries. (Would be 630-9:00 PM, Tuesday Wed Thurs.) Thanks for any insight should you get around to reading this wall of text (I know you’re busy af.) Ty!!

I'll tell you the best cardio routine that hopefully you can adopt. All you need is a jump rope and a neighbor with an angry dog. Tie the jump rope to the gate and get the dog really riled up. Then pull the gate open and the length of the jump rope will give you the head start you need. The goal is for the dog to get tired of running before you do. It is by far the best cardio I have found and once you get out of the hospital and heal up a bit you can really feel the improvement.

Have to politely disagree, sounds like Chewie struggled with HIIT in his workout regimen, doesn't really mean it's not good for BJJ, many high level practitioners swear buy it, yea rolling and pushing yourself for cardio is great but this shouldn't be your only form of cardiovascular output - my 2c, thanks for the great content 👍🏻

Hey Viva. As I said, I’ll use it for comps but that’s about it. It’s useful at times. I just don’t find it to be something to put into the mix all of the time. Honestly I find them a lot of fun, just not great for me personally. That said whatever works for you is fine by me. In regards to cardio bjj isn’t my only cardio either. I just don’t do HIIT workouts. Appreciate the comment.

Well we have a whole weight lifting gym area for people who don’t do Bjj or train like I do.

BURPEES

I was looking to see if anybody would reccomend burbees..I have been injured a couple of times over the past 12 yrs of training and during the times of not being able to roll I kept about 80% of my cardio doing various types of burpees..When I was able to get back on the mat it didn't take long to pick up where my JiuJitsu cardio left off..My rule of thumb would place rounds of rolling with rounds of burpees..just fyi..
