I was stationed in Alaska for four winters, and we never used hand warmers like that. Just stick your hands in your armpits- it's free and more effective.

People will spoil themselves with the hand-warmers and be sad when they run out, instead of knowing the right glove combinations to never need them.

I use a USB rechargeable hand warmer that doubles as a battery bank. I do keep a pack of hot hands just in case. Sitting in my ground blind and it’s a high of 22 degrees. Hand warmer in my muff, it makes an otherwise miserable sit 5% better.

I got a USB hand warmer for hunting, too. Just a cheap Amazon one. They are best for the end of the day. Top off the phone the use the rest to warm up. 👍

I keep them to put in my socks and keep my toes warm when the temperature gets really gnarly.

Only 6 to 8 hours? If it stays warm that long that would be extremely impressive for a little thing like that.

Works well in a trauma kit with a mylar blanket

I work snow removal and having a few of the 6x4 big boys is a must…… not for me though, there’s always one idiot that’s unprepared. Make them put in there appendix/chest. Not gonna be too cold to work for long!

You can put them back in a Ziploc bag and they will last for however many hours you didn't use them. You can reuse them that way

Idgi they literally carry duffles full of ice screws and a back mounted well pump, they are now mad at .02oz of hot hands? Wtf?

What would substitute be?

Proper gloves / mitts.

Perhaps a Zippo hand warmer (lighter fluid/catalyst style, not the battery-powered one). One use of the lighter fluid gets you 12 hours, no waste other than the fluid bottle once it's used up

carbs are an appropriate chemical hand-warmer
