Spent my last 8 years as an 18B. One of the best and worst experiences of my life. Best because of all the skills I learned and developed and the brothers I made. Worst because I’m not even 40 and I’ve already had two joints replaced, developed arthritis, partially deaf, 3 herniated discs that need to be fused at some point, fucked up neck, and probably CTE. But damn, sometimes I think about how id give all of it back so I could actually keep up with my kids and not have missed so many early years of their life.

I tried joining at 18 in 2010. Obama was bringing TONS of troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan so recruiting standards were super strict at the time. I wasn't allowed in because a chest tattoo was half an inch to high. I even got 20 laser removal treatments done on it and both the Army and Marines still said no. My recruiter told me if I had enlisted 2 or 3 years prior it wouldn't have been an issue. I really REALLY regret getting that tattoo.

I think most of you replying misunderstand my comment and think I’m saying you can’t be a GB if you are over 30. I’m referring to how the time it would take to get to the selection process would put me outside the maximum age allowed to try out. There are advantages to being an older guy, even in the infantry. I'm 30 now and I'll be trying out for the sniper section of my battalion in February and plan on going to Ranger School within my first contract.
