A few years ago I was in a local pet store and saw Hyacinths (NOT being sold! They were just hanging out there being taken care of while their humans were on vacation!) and that was when I realized how BIG those guys really are. And it was so intimidating for someone that didn’t know much about birds.

Technically, Hyacinth Macaws ARE Dream Birbs to me because they’re big, smart and adorable-but they are also loud and require resources I will probably not be able to afford. That said, I’d love to major in Cognitive Ethology and study Parrots, so it’d be a great excuse to work with them and advocate for their welfare.

There was a Hyacinth for a long time at my local bird store where a lot of birds my parents have had over the years (including my current bird of 23 years). It was always a highlight of the trip to play with him. Like Hymie in this video, this macaw really liked going on people's shoulders. So I would rarely pick him up and just play with him instead. Eventually though I figured I could retain control by gripping both of his feet. Eventually he was sold, and I hope he's happy. He was extremely friendly and playful, but needed a firm hand to set boundaries. Always thought Hyacinths were a lot of fun, but given how huge they are, how much they cost, and how long they live, I would never get one myself.

I don’t have a bird. Not sure if I would want a bird… but watching you interact with each bird is Nothing short of AMAZING! Yes! I want to see EVERY BIRD you have ever worked with! I want all the details! Always! I watch you by the hour/day! Birds are like kids I guess. You can’t fool the , and they KNOW when they’re Loved! I love you and I Love what you bring out of each bird. I used to raise and Show Siamese I LOVED having babies on the ground. When you put extra into those creations you have in your home… the trust, the Love eagerness to be with you is so gratifying. So I kinda understand how you get into the birds heads & think like they do. You get the acceptance & Preference for you back from those magnificent creatures! I just want to say as an owner of a blue front amazon for thirty years, do not get any bird unless you are ready to invest all that is required to care for them. People buy on impulse because they're pretty or they're funny but the amount of work is substantial. The constant cleaning of the cage, the constant bringing of food and snacks, you can't just leave seed in a bowl, the concern when the bird is alone and you need to get home, the cost of boarding when you go away, the noise. They are beautiful but they have great needs, need for good food, need for companionship, need to be let out of the cage, more needs than a baby. At least a baby would have grown up by now and left home after thirty years but still I am doing all these things. I just want to caution, be aware of all that is involved before investing in any bird, of course a budgie is easy. Many times I have wished I could go back in time and wish I would've gotten a budgie instead of my bird. Very high maintenance. Be forewarned.

So I'm watching a video about a hyacinth, and the budgie sounds in the background is reminding me how much I miss having them around!

Great vid. We have a Green Wing and yep he was a shoulder rusher too....trained him and now he doesn't even feel comfortable up there after 3yrs.....he likes to stay on forearms....still working to get him to be on your hand with thumb over one foot....some success there, always a work in progress. Anyway, lots of people think they want the big birds......maybe you could do videos on how hard they really are. Like how much they eat, how quickly they destroy $30+ toys, how needy they get when bored, how noisy they can be when bored or even just crazy noisy they are when happy. Don't forget the messes they make...and don't forget big bird equals big poop and lots of it. Also how about how smart, mischievous, and manipulating they can really be. When our GW is bored and wants to play with the other birds like our cockatiel, he will go let him out of his cage. How about how quirky they can be as individuals, if we don't change out one of our GW stands poop papers down below it, he will pull the papers off himself and throw them around. Im sure big bird owners have lots of fun(?)quirky bird stories. All that said he is a member of the family and we couldn't be without him......but some days he pushes that pretty hard....🤦
