My 1st attempt getting my macaw Jinx to like another macaw (GOES WRONG 😣)

Hey! I’m a dog trainer and dogs being anxious because of their owners is generally a myth. Some more sensitive breeds like shepherds do this on occasion but the majority of dogs will not be anxious because you are. Especially when it comes to things like reactivity aggression ect. When we well a handler to be calm it’s for them, and to try and make for better handling! (Anxious people tend to pull a dog around more, make tension on the leash ect)

Correct. Animals read energy first. That’s the main driver for them. Your gut feeling was only 50% right, because you went to the cage unsure and anxious already which caused Jinx to react…then your gut feelings told you something was off. But really jinx read your energy first, displayed behaviour and you read that. We can’t fool animals with our energy output or masking something…

I really think you’re so hard on yourself! And you’re very critical of everything you do. Trust your gut. Women’s intuition is REAL. And you’re so good at this. And stop looking to Dave for affirmation of your knowledge and skills. And I also think your trying to beat the haters or those typewriter warriors (trolls) who want to come on anyone’s channel just to run them down. So if you say it before they do, you have protected yourself. But you know what you’re doing. It’s so obvious to most of us. Especially those that own parrots. Trust yo-self! As a trainer of young humans (middle school teacher 😆) I always remind my students, and myself in the process, that far more is learned through failure than through success. Failure is such an important part of the learning process and, regardless of how much experience we have in a particular field, we will always experience failures. I tell my students to embrace failures as learning moments and to really dissect failures to find the valuable information we can use to inform future experiences. It’s also important for teachers (or those more experienced) to own and learn from our own failures, so that our students see how to work through them! I love how you showed insight and retrospective thought in this video and I think it’s a great learning moment for everyone watching! You’re so right when you say “listen to your gut” yet we all ignore that feeling from time to time. You’re such an inspiration…don’t beat yourself up too much! We believe in you!! ❤

This is just such a helpful video to me. I’m not a trainer…I don’t even have a bird, I just love examples of healthy animal-human bonds. I’ve been going through the same thing with my tiels, I got a new one in December and although I’ve trained her here and there and have them out together a few times a week i just feel really bad that it’s March and I haven’t really accomplished anything with her lol…. She’s obsessed with my other tiel, my other tiel is scared of her because she’s too excited…. What scares me away from doing more is that my other tiel is old and I don’t want to stress him out too much with her but he has been happier having another bird around… it’s difficult not to beat yourself up over time and progress but you’re 100% right that you should trust your gut and do things when the time feels right!!! 💖

I've always been taught to "fail forward". When you fail, are you one step closer? Have you learned something from your failure? Someone who never fails never learns to work through their failures. When it inevitably happens they are devastated. Just like pain, failure has purpose. It is a natural training tool. In the same way you let your birds fail, let yourself fail. you will be better for it. You have now reinforced trusting your gut instinct. Congratulations on your failure!

As an over thinker married to someone who liked to gently tease me gently when I make mistakes, I see a lot of my relationship in you and Dave. Trying to avoid giving my partner ammunition would lead to me second-guessing my own knowledge and tying myself up in knots.. Teasing and joking was how he tried to show love and support to cheer me up when things went wrong , but it just made me doubt myself more. It took some deep conversations and some trial and errors between the 2 of us to work out ways that worked for us, but we are both much happier. I just mention it as you always seem so much less confident when Dave is in videos with you, and he seems to have a very similar nature. Intuition is a good skill to have, it's OK to trust it, even if in the moment you can't put into words why.

Trust that you have enough experience to know what to expect :) i'm a behavioral neuroscientist (and love references to schedules of reinforcement ;) - when watching animals every day, you have a good idea of what antecedent behaviors are most likely to lead to the next. This isn't a "gut feeling" - it's based on your keen observations and expertise.

I don't see a fail here. All I see is the first try for a meeting that was short, but non eventful because you understand your birds so much. Jinx picks up on your energy as much as you can read his and you're right, you can trust your gut feelings. It doesn't matter if it takes a long time before they can be in the same room without a fuss. You've got to do what's best for them, not for the audience, but I know you already know this. I'm not worried, you've got this.

I always introduce a new parrot is in a cage, or the travel cage. Then I introduce them to each other while all in the cages. I watch the reaction. If everyone just shows interest with no fluffing or eye pinning, I let them out one at a time.

About you calling it a “fail day “, would you say Jinx failed because he wasn’t ready for this? No! Of course not, so don’t call it a fail day for you. If you hadn’t tried, you would be beating yourself up for not trying. It is simply not fair to beat yourself up for trying, and then beat yourself up for not trying. You tried. Nothing catastrophic happened. Everyone is fine and you can try again a different day. Try to have as much grace with yourself, as you do with your students. I know you would never tell a student that they failed because their bird wasn’t ready when they had been putting in the work preparing for particular day. This community loves you and Dave so much! This was just a learning day, not a fail day.

Jinx is just a very needy boy!!! He loves you guys and so small changes and he is like “what the!” I wonder whatd happen if you completely changed the dynamic and got a new trainer in go work with jinx. Just simple stuff but a new person might change the dynamic for the positive. Like you sometimes do when training others animals. You being new just gives a new energy. Could also be worth doing big energy using training sessions with both birds individually before the meeting, so they have less energy to devote towards eachother. This would also take away those initial desires to fly to one or both of you.

I really appreciate you sharing videos like this, showing that things don't go perfectly for you as well. I've beat myself up a lot for not having things go perfectly, or as well as you guys. I wouldnt call this a fail though. You got your baseline data/status for these 2 birds. Maybe they would not have been cool with each other, even if things did feel right. Here's to your SUCCESS DAY! :) Totally worth trying! It may have not gone like you'd hoped BUT celebrate the small successes! No one was injured. Neither of your birds got so over threshold they couldn't recover quickly. They didn't get into a fight. They didnt fly. They were both on trees in a relatively close area, being managed by both of you guys with great skill. You each were able to read their body language and know what to do, AND what not to do. It's hard not to get into your head and analyze over, and over again what you should or could have done differently, how you could have changed the setup, or aborted from the moment you saw jinx in his flight. As good trainers and caregivers we strive to set our animals up for success first and foremost, and feel like failures when it doesn't go like we hoped it would.. "trust your gut" is a powerful and wonderful message and words to live by for sure. Remember, you did trust your gut, in the end, realized he was just slightly ratcheting up, instead of down, and ended the session. Give yourself some grace, and thanks for being so vulnerable and real on camera. Voicing all your doubts, worry, and concern means you're human, and also shows your dedication and love for your birds. It reminds the rest of us that stuff like this is normal, and doesn't just happen to "me". Your video was like a breath of fresh air, and a reminder to breathe. ;) Thanks for sharing it. I work a lot with reactive dogs and their people, and I'm constantly reminding myself and my students sometimes stuff just happens, no matter how thought out and ultra prepared we try to be. Our animals have good days and bad days just like us, and how it's a valuable learning opportunity for the next time. Behavior is always a tricky read, and you have a good eye! :)

Just keep it natural some time you can do a move that make things chaotic but without casualties just never put food for some animals in open areas without boundaries or they will attack each other because they fight about food it happens a lot when you keep a big group of animals you can watch pigeons in KZbin they give them feeders with boundaries so they don't fight maybe you didn't realise that because you didn't have a lot of birds before or you forgot about how to do it i propose putting the macaws in attached aviary with a barrier and watching them from a far distance at the same time so you can intervene if they attack each other

There are no failures, just ways we learn do not work. They (those 'failures') narrow the choices so we can get it right in the future. The only failure is not to learn a better or different way. Remember there is a season/time for everything. This will happen when it is correct for all.

Hey! I’m a dog trainer and there’s a lot of overlap between the two and I just wanted to say that no, it wasn’t a failure. It was a Learning opportunity and data was collected. From this we learned that it isn’t quite time. We learned that Ava (I apologize if names are spent wrong) is still a trigger of jinx after a certain distance, and that Ava isn’t quite ready to be handled by someone else in the same room as you handling a potential hazard. I work a lot with aggressive and reactive dogs and if this were a situation with two dogs I’d take a step or two back to working with the animals on my own, and working with them at the original distance for a few sessions before even considering moving them closer. I know it may seem like a failure but we all have to learn somehow, and this situation allowed you to learn many things about the two bird’s behavior and current ability to cohab! Will it happen some day? Maybe, maybe not but that day wasn’t the day, and that’s okay :)

I think you overthink some things and you put to much pressure on yourself to make everything go "perfect" or the way you expect things to go. Just because something doesn't go the way you want doesn't make it a failure it gives you more knowledge about the animal you're training and sometimes that's the only way to get it. Help! My female IRN attacked my new male IRN twice yesterday! She is aggressive but he is very submissive and sweet. Will they ever get used to each other? As well as we know our own animals, they are animals. The dominance need and desire is hardwired in nature. you can't override some things. whether they are mated or not they will be territorial and will act according to thousands of years of evolution no matter how much we want them to be otherwise.

Please help, my budgie is a flight budgie, I'm having trouble with taming, he's eating millet, he has to chase and he does, my problem is, he knows my hand, he knows I'm not going to hurt him, he's been on my chest, walking around, slid down my leg, but he won't get on my finger and I've done all the ' let your bird get use to you, I also read to him. Jaimieleigh… relax… take a deep breath… and relax. You guys are doing everything right and things do take time, so if ever you feel it is too much in any way then simply abort before attempting any integration. Especially so when you yourselves are heightened and fearful by the attempt of it. You know that parrots pick up on our behaviours more than most other animals, so Jinx being heightened was possibly caused by your own nervousness. He lacked the confidence in you and there was a change in the flock that you wasn't going to be comfortable attempting, so that is how he reacted. I don't know how you have their aviaries set up but putting Ava right beside Jinx, with a couple of inch gap between them, may have a better result of them being put together. It may be stressful for them at first, but once they recognize they are no harm to one another, then they will soon bond. Do this for a few weeks and try to give them the same things at the same time, so they can see that they are equal in every way. If you do this with their Aviaries and keep them together without any free time separately, then you may find they will come together eventually. If you can find a space that has a glass door between two rooms, then this may help too when they need to exercise together. They can come together in their own spaces, but will also be protected from one another by the glass if an attack is imminent. I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck! Is it that you are getting a bad feeling about something actually happening or are you getting anxious and the birds are picking up on it and responding negativity. I know working with animals myself this is something I do myself. Sometimes I plan and think so much instead of just making a plan and doing it that I think I sabotage the animals with my over thinking.

Follow your gut feeling -always! Even if that means the audience has to wait for *that* video a little longer. The birds are on their own schedule that doesn't necessarily coincides with the human schedule (what the audience wants) and that is perfectly fine. You're putting out so much incredible material that is educational, fun and creative. To me it doesn't matter if it takes longer to get to see the next video in a certain series. -Follow you gut feeling, the flow of synchronicity will bring everything to you (and to the audience) in right timing. And like you said, even that which at first looks like a 'fail' is an opportunity from a different perspective. 💛🦜
