Students often come to the IITs with the expectation that if their coaching institute teachers were so good, how good the IIT profs must be. There are, no doubt, some excellent teachers among the profs but there are considerable examples of profs who are not great at teaching.
In this video, I explore some points regarding this negative aspect:
Why is the teaching not good sometimes?
What are the criteria for good teaching?
What can students do when faced with not so good teaching?

This is a very interesting topic. I realized that a lot of things is about perception. First it is a perception that a person with higher knowledge automatically has the ability to transfer knowledge in a public gathering. I have seen professors who are not so good in a classroom teaching but very good when it comes to one-on-one transfer of knowledge. You are right in pointing out that transferring knowledge in public gathering/classroom is an altogether different skillset. We have seen this in symposiums too where we find some presentations boring and some very interesting. Even the concept of teaching needs to be taught. The second point about feedback, I remember when we were students and if the entire class felt that we did not grasp the teaching, we spoke up. And for the benefit of everybody, I need to point out that the teachers were very receptive in trying to explain the concept so that everybody understood. This happened both in school and college. I do remember the entire class taking up a matter to the HOD in the middle of the semester and he intervened. The lecturer there contented that the syllabus needs to be completed and we countered by saying that what is the point in completing the syllabus if we havent understood anything. That brings me to the last point, again on perception and that is how a student perceives a teacher. Though I cant say for Tier I institutes, in India a lot of students expect spoon-feeding even at college level and a some of students do not prefer lecturers who make them think :). I guess students in colleges need to realise that everything cannot be taught and they need to take initiative to approach the teachers either in class or independently. Students will be surprised, in most cases teachers are only too willing to clarify, they just need to be asked. So as you have said, students need to ask and not feel shy. Apologies for a long post :).

My major problems (2015-2020) were : 1. Classes organized are too far in IIT KGP. I would keep into account the 15mins taken to travel from hostel to Nalanda. 2. Prof's dressing sense is worse than students and sometimes even smelly or body odour. But I blame the humidity of KGP for this. As a Kolkata guy, it was heartbreaking. My dad is a lawyer and his dress and uniform is very formal when he goes to work. 3. Diversity in Professors is lacking. I would love to see professors from various parts of the country at IIT KGP but in my dep everyone was from Bengal and male. Women students do feel like 1-2 female professors from other regions of the country would make it a more balanced helm. 4. Atrocious Infrastructure which now has been fixed in many ways especially the Biochem department. B.C.Roy Hospital has given me bad vibes earlier. 5. The first year classes which are common for all have very good structure, with assignments and problem books. But as advanced classes come, they lack this structure and become recitation. I would study both before coming to class and after but could never seem to catch up. I would rather have you slow down the pace and vastness of the course in place of depth of understanding. I feel as now a researcher it's kinda hypocritic but give a proper timeline of development of new tech in your courses. It's cause the new generation is gonna struggle with things that came after they were born and not before. 6. Reduce class size. Small intimate classes would be a breath of fresh air. Don't be so massy. IITs enjoy a mass appeal unlike IISC,ISI,CMI or institutes of a similar caliber. While general education and literacy rate is important , we are not exactly for that. I feel really stupid to say this but IIT has become Indian institute of Talent rather than technology. I know professors cannot solve all the listed problems and it's also not their job. But in some ways they can make an effort.

Dressing and body odour of teachers!! Are the rooms too small? Just asking…. And the thing is that people in other states either don’t care about research ( mostly) or don’t think being a prof is respectable compared to other things (my opinion, need not be the true case!).

I am currently in my 3rd year at IIT Kgp (mechanical), and personally, I have found Professor SK Pal to be the best professor I've had so far when it comes to explaining concepts. Additionally, I have had the privilege of learning from several exceptional professors in the Mechanical Department (Anirban sir , jc sir , aditya bandopadhyay sir) , who, in my opinion, surpass those in other departments in terms of teaching quality.

The selection of this topic for the video needs a lot of pluck. It's a privilege for those students who are able to study under your guidance. All the points you mentioned of ideal teaching procedure with mix pragmatism, are what a student truly wants. If things were implemented in this manner then students can double their effort, effortlessly. The weakest subject can become the strength for a student, if the right teacher is there to guide.

Its commendable that you're talking about this....I'm almost done with my mbbs now and the quality of teachers is mostly not good..infact most just read out PPTs. They dont even care if anyone is listening to them. I've seen whenever someone from our generation points this out most of the seniors pounce on juniors saying sitting through lectures where the teacher is solely reading out the ppt will help you learn patience and endurance. What kind of an excuse is this for bad teaching? I'd rather choose to stand in a long queue if I want to learn patience. What are colleges for then if we have to use youtube and coaching apps to learn? They dont even teach properly in the clinics. But expect everything during vivas for which we have to learn from youtube or coaching apps

Watching your videos sir, on a loop, this one is really eye-opening, I did not have this insight when I was in my first year and I wish someone told me the same. The only point of concern that I see (and know through personal experience), is your point of feedback to faculties, the problem here is that openly conveying your opinion/ feedback might not be very pragmatic. In my professional career, a person who is open to feedback from his immediate manager/superior is considered to be fairly humble (because most people are not that open honestly). Faculties being open to feedback from 19-year-old kids, is rather utopian, mostly what will happen is that even if the student is polite, the faculty might not be that open and that comes with repercussions. Unless the system is anonymous ,there is no fear of retaliation and teaching performance is duly accounted for in career progression, I don't think just submitting feedback works.

I'm a practising Gas Turbine Electrical Engineer abroad and studied in Jadavpur Univ. during 1980s. My opinion is that ( somewhat like doctors), an internship of at least 5 years in related Industry must be a criterion to go to Engineering teaching profession. For me some of the real time Gas Turbine combined cycle problem solving which was done in field based on logical analysis, that experience cannot be obtained by Masters and Ph.Ds within the academic environment. Recently few weird problems we encountered and our team thought process derived a long term solution. Those aspects are missing in Indian Engineering claases. Bringing field experience to the classroom can change the learning environment drastically.

@AnkhArcRod 2 ай бұрын
Though 5 years is a bit too much because it is known that research productivity dwindles with age. However, candidates with 3 years of industry work (not internship) should be given preference in addition to added benefit/perks or at least be treated on par with a postdoc to avail a higher starting salary. My 6 years of industry experience has been most valuable. Having said that, this does not solve the other core problem that having knowledge does not equate to being good at teaching.

Good follow-up video after the poll you took yesterday! I would love to see your channel turn into podcasts too where you discuss such issues with your other colleagues(profs, Postdocs/PhD scholars in IITs) who are interested in interacting. Teaching no doubt is essential for effective dissemination of knowledge. The BTechs and even Masters students surely rely a lot on teaching. I feel, however, that with enough scope still left for improvement in teaching traditional classes, the focus should now shift to research and nurturing centers of excellence/labs that contribute to technological growth. Perhaps another idea for you for the next video "How IITs can attract the best talent for PhDs and how they can improve their research output"? I am personally impressed with the improvement in the global ranking of IITs in recent years. Of course long way to go still

Yes you could hear what Mr. Narayan Murthy and Super30 Teacher and others said about students entering IITs...No proactive action has been taken by IITs to atleast improve the situation... While the Gems are melting away,stones are being coloured with fancy colours by IITs...Atleast JEE Mains gives us fair time to prepare for it,since many people don't even know about JEE. I am currently in Top State Government Engineering College (MSU Baroda), such brilliant guys I met, but they don't have access to IITs and NITs why? A fair chance is not given, even drop is not worth it, everyone cannot take drop, they have families to feed. Such negligence by the Top Institutes of the Country and by Gormint, they cannot even print career info in the backsides of the NCERT books( it would be the best of way of informing us), then how would anyone be able to think of society and others. But still these guys would, because they know what matters, but the big thinking and intellectual institutes don't. Such a shame... Sorry its very negative, frustrations are like that only. I am not sad or depressed anymore, I have learnt what life is after coming here, talking with people and am cherishing it...

Thanks a lot sir for making the video. You have raised very important points. I want to add something to this. In college, the semester is 12-13 weeks long (with 3-4 hours/per week teaching hours - including tutorials). In this duration, the instructor is expected to cover the major portion of that subject according to some given standard reference textbooks. As that whole book can't be covered in that duration, so the topics of utmost importance that form the basis for advance studies is expected to be covered by the professor. Now how that topics are being covered depends on the professor. I feel that the lecture should not be such that, which makes the subject too simplified. The lecture should contain some elements which are meant to be complicated (like some case studies which involve the application of elements of the concepts being covered, or maybe some open-ended research questions) which students are not expected to be able to understand completely during lecture hours. This is a potential source for raising the curiosity among students to search about them (on google, research papers, books other than prescribed ones etc). This is actually the way how the research progresses. But as this consumes time and as the semester time is limited, so generally professors are not able to make balance between the two : following the topics of course and connecting it with advance studies. I feel that for undergrad students the emphasis should be on the former one as that will enhance their confidence in reading books. For Masters' and PhD students, the emphasis should be on the latter. Because the students can study the topics on their own from the books. What they really need is to get glimpse of what is actually happening in the real world (current research and technology). And as the professors at IIT are generally researchers, so they can communicate this more effectively. I have seen various PG lecture series on youtube (like electromagnetism, quantum mechanics etc), where the teacher just teaches solving Laplace, Poisson equation etc without giving any applications of the electromagnetic effects and quantum phenomena. As with this the students are able to crack exam with good scores, thus those videos have high views also. Though it is very unfortunate that for higher studies in premier institutes, students have to get good ranks in various entrance exams, which is achievable in 6-8 months of coaching and hardwork and those with good understanding and working knowledge of the subject get eliminated from it. The videos that does not go into solving every mathematical steps and which go deep in the subject itself have lesser views. So, there is always a tradeoff. A certain effort is required from student side also, so that instructor can touch diverse topics apart from prescribed syllabus.

Agree with everything you said. But not with the feedback thing. Actually feedback doesn't help. It is like no matter what feedback or instruction is given Cheteshwar Pujara can't bat like Chris gayle. Similarly it is very very difficult to change the teaching style or method. Those teachers who don't prepare their lectures won't do it on feedback either.

Nice video Professor. Teaching is an art. Self understanding is quite easy, but making others understand, depending on their calibre needs quite an effort. I am really surprised to know that, even students abroad face this problem with teachers. Because the common perception is that, professors abroad are generally well versed in teaching and possess good subject knowledge. But do you think, will teachers have a heart to accept, when they are told that, there is a mistake in their teaching methodology. I don’t mean, all the teachers, just few half baked here and there. They may feel it as a huge blow on their ego and may threaten students like, they will reduce their internal marks etc. So I think, students must carefully make their move, in this regard. Well if the feedback given is anonymous in the form of any questionnaire, it’s ok, but otherwise I mean.
@Prof_JC
@Prof_JC Жыл бұрын
You have pointed out something very important. Ideally, this kind of feedback is best given in an anonymous fashion. That is why, every semester, after a few weeks of classes a share a Google Form to be filled in by the students anonymously. The good thing about this anonymity is that from my side, I can rest assured that whatever they are saying is their candid opinion. At the same time however, I think in extreme cases, it is better if a small group of academically serious students approach the concerned professor and tell him about the difficulties they are facing. At least at the UG level, where students are expected to be more mature than high school students, professors should take such feedback in a constructive fashion. But then we are all flesh and blood and it is difficult to say who will take it on his ego!

@@Prof_JC yes Sir. Sometimes, I feel like complaining about my kids teachers, but then give up, thinking about the aftermath, if my child would get cornered in the class. I agree with you that sometimes profs race to complete the syllabus. It is very much possible to reduce the syllabus depending on the length of the semester and the available number of lecture hours especially in an autonomous institute like an IIT. And, we do this quite often. However, there are certain global standards to be maintained regarding the minimum coverage for certain courses. But then again, what is the point of storming through the chapters if the students do not end up learning anything?

Students will scared to give feedback to the iit/nit profs with highly bloated ego during the course lest the students get victimized in grades. Suggestion is to be taken up in all-iit/nit autothority (education ministry?) to go for video lectures by the stallwart teachers" of the particular topics only to all iits and convert the rest of the "not so good teachers" as teaching assistants. When there there is such a harsh selection process for the students, bar for the teachers should be higher for the teachers too.

So I am a student who did her 12th in 2020. After that I was studying to crack neet it's been 4attempts and 3years now I could not secure a government mbbs seat. The counseling ended just today. I know there are options like bds/veterinary/nursing open but I want to switch my career to AI/ML/data science... Since I have almost 4 years of gap after 12th is there any possibility for me to change my career path? You are one of the few dependable people I found on KZbin who actually tells facts and reality of Indian situation rather than speculations... Please guide me sir will be obliged 🙏

You have asked a question about a difficult situation and there is no way for me other than to give you a difficult answer. I am sorry there is no way to sugarcoat it. Giving such a long gap is not wise. And, after giving such a long gap, wishing to change one's direction is also not wise. I sincerely advise you to take up the realistic options like BDS/veterinary/nursing that are actually open to you. Even if by some means you manage to study AI/ML/data science, and even if you end up with some job in that area, note that your competition in the job market will be against others who have done significantly better than you starting from 12th ... their preparation of mathematics, programming etc. will be at a much higher level than you. So by going into that path you will always have to struggle too much. On the contrary, if you go into the realistic options that are available to you now, it is very much possible that you end up excelling in them. The satisfaction that you will have from that will be much greater than some satisfaction that you think you go down some other alternative path (which in the first place is not suitable for you). I really hope that you will try to understand what I am trying to say here. I do not want to give you any false hope and just told you the facts.
